I love Korean Remake articles and after watching this movie, I wanted to try and imagine what the Korean remake of it would be like since Korean horror/psychological movies are the best in my opinion.
US is a 2019 American psychological horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele. Us had its world premiere at South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW), on March 8, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on March 22nd, 2019, by Universal Pictures. It was a commercial success, grossing $254 million worldwide, against a budget of $20 million, and received praise for Peele's screenplay and direction, as well as the musical score and Lupita Nyong'o's performance.
TRAILER
PLOT
In 1986, young Adelaide Thomas goes on vacation with her parents to Santa Cruz. At the beach, she wanders off while her father is playing whack-a-mole, and enters a funhouse, where she encounters a doppelgänger of herself in the Hall of Mirrors. When her parents eventually find her, she is unable to speak.
In the present day, the adult Adelaide, who has since recovered her speech, heads to her family's lake house in Santa Cruz with her husband, Gabe Wilson, and their two children, Zora and Jason. She is apprehensive about the trip, but Gabe brushes off her misgivings. They meet the Tyler family, their rich friends at the Santa Cruz beach. After arriving, Jason wanders off and sees a man standing alone with blood dripping from his hands. When she realizes Jason is missing, Adelaide panics, and the family leaves the beach as soon as he is found.
That night, a family of four dressed in red appears in the Wilsons' driveway. They break into the Wilsons' home and attack them. The Wilsons quickly realize that the four intruders are doppelgängers of themselves, led by Adelaide's double, Red... and the rest is for you to figure out. One of the biggest plot twists ever is awaiting you at the end of the movie. US is one of my favourite movies, an absolute masterpiece, and I highly recommend it (along with Get Out, another hit horror movie by the same screenwriter and director, Jordan Peele, talking about racism.)
CAST
Son Ye Jin as Adelaide Wilson/Red
(Adelaide's double is Red)
Adelaide Wilson |
Adelaide Wilson is a sweet and loving mom, but a warrior when it comes to protecting her family. Son Ye Jin is perfect for this role. She has the aspect of the lovely, warm, protective mom and she has already played a similar role is her 2016 movie, The Truth Beneath. Besides I've seen her acting, and she's talented enough to be played both Adelaide Wilson and Red. And finally, she can be a creepy psycho just like Red (this pic is what made me sure of my decision).
Red |
Gong Yoo as Gabriel "Gabe" Wilson/Abraham
( Gabe's double is Abraham)
Gabe and his daughter |
This one was hard to choose. At first, I chose Lee Byun Hun since he's an amazing actor and I think he and Son Ye Jin would make a lovely couple, but Gabe/Abraham is tall and big so I changed my mind and chose Gong Yoo. He's taller, and his figure suits the role. In addition, he played an almost similar role in his 2016 horror movie, Train To Busan (unfortunately he does not survive like Gabe did). All in all, Gong Yoo is familiar to horror, run and survive, type of movies and he physically resembles the real movie actor.
Abraham |
Kim Sae Ron as Zora Wilson/Umbrae
(Zora's double is Umbrae)
Zora Wilson |
The real actress is 14 years old but her character Zora is about 17 years old (she had a driving licence in the movie). When I searched "Korean young actresses" they were all 18+ but fortunately, Koreans look younger than their real age, so I decided to pick Kim Sae Ron. Firstly, she's perfect to play the role of Umbrae (a weird creepy girl with a crazy like gaze and a frightening smile,) and again like Gong Yoo and Son Ye Jin, she's starred in many movies, (horror, thriller) similar to US's themes, and I personally think she's a great actress.
Umbrae |
Chun Bo Geun as Jason Wilson/Pluto
(Jason's double is Pluto)
Jason |
I didn't have many options because of the age of this character (11). To be honest, I didn't know that this kid exists till now, and I have no idea about his acting skills but Jason's role is not hard to play. Even his double's character is not a challenging role because Pluto (Jason's double) is close to normal than being a total psycho, unlike the other doubles, (except that half of his face is burnt and he wears a mask to hide it) so anyone can play this role.
Pluto |
Lee Min Jung as Kitty Tyler/Dahlia
(Kitty's double is Dahlia)
And
Joo Sang Wook as Josh Tyler/Tex
(Josh's double is Tex)
Kitty and Josh Tyler
The Tylers are a typical rich family. Josh Tyler, the husband, is always busy working and doesn't care about his wife Kitty, who is a housewife. Lee Min Jung and Joo Sang Wook have that rich, A-class type of couple vibe, just like the Tylers. Min Jung has a bright smile with a sweet voice like Kitty, and Sang Wook seems like a rich CEO, and his figure and face shape is close to Josh. Even though those two actors mostly star in rom-com dramas and I thought that they can't play serious challenging roles, they proved me wrong with their recent drama Fates and Furies, with totally different characters especially Min Jung, that's why I believe they can be the Tyler couple and Dahlia and Tex at the same time.
Tex | Dahlia |
Ryu Hyo Young as Lindsey Tyler/Nex
(Lindsey's double is Nex)
And
Ryu Hwa Young as Becca Tyler/Io
(Becca's double is Io)
Becca Lindsey | Hwa Young Hyo Young |
This was the easiest to pick since I love the Ryu twins, and ever since I saw Becca and Lindsey, I immediately thought about Hwa Young and Hyo Young. The Tyler twins are that "me and you against the world" type of twins, though they may be mean because they have to deal with the bad relationship their parents share.
The Ryu twins fit these characters perfectly since the two are inseparable and seem to love the other more than anything. Moreover both Hwa Young and Hyo Young are talented actresses so playing the roles of Io and Nex wouldn't be that much of a challenge.
Io and Nex |
Shin Rin Ah as Young Adelaide/Young Red
At first, I chose Oh Ah Rin, the sassy energetic princess from The Last Empress, but Ah Rin is too adorable to be the evil double so I chose Rin Ah who had more experience with horror movies, and the calm attitude Young Adelaide had in the movie. She may be a bit older than the character who is roughly 7 or 8 years old (Rin Ah is 10) but again, Korean people look younger than they actually are, so the age is no problem. Besides, she has quite an interesting career for her age. I believe she will be one of the greatest actresses when she grows up.
