Never Let Me Go (2022)

Iniziare a guardare questa serie penso sia stata una delle cose migliori che potessi fare.
In generale il cast per me è ottimo, veramente un ottimo cast e sincera ho amato vedere phound e puwin in una serie più “matura”, mi hanno dato un'impressione differente, non che prima non li avessi amati, ma qui è più visibile il loro talento e bho è anche un fatto di me che ho amato più questa serie che l’altra.

Per me questa serie ha tutto, ma la cosa che più mi ha colpito è la crescita personale di Diao.
Nei primi episodi mi era un totale punto interrogativo e mi stava antipatico, mi sembrava il solito bambino viziato che sparla solo eccetera, non mi stava particolarmente simpatico.
Che poi pareva avesse tremila personalità, indossava così tante maschere che veramente non capivo quale fosse la più veritiera.
Una delle cose che mi facevano arrabbiare era il suo pretendere di fare il capo così e collì con Palm quando poi dagli altri a scuola si faceva tranquillamente bullizzare, non che fosse colpa sua, chiariamoci, il bullismo ti penetra nel profondo ed è difficile riprendersi dopo essere stato ferito, proprio a livello mentale. Dico solo che dato il suo caratteraccio poteva pure cercare di tenere testa invece di far fare, in ogni caso mi è pure dispiaciuto di sta cosa, fortunatamente a lui non fregava più di tanto, ceh non è che non se ne importava perchè alla fine le cose gli hanno pure lasciato un segno, è solo che se le faceva scivolare ma quello che ho sempre pensato è che anche se fai tanto il forte, alla fine anche se di poco la cosa ti rimane, puoi fingere e può veramente non importarti ma arriverà il momento in cui la cosa si sarà così tanto accumulata che scoppierai, non tanto di tristezza ma proprio di rabbia perchè è estenuante vedere tutte queste persone che i cazzi loro non se li sanno fare.
Vabbè detto questo, in tutto sto periodo sincera sincera non ho capito il vero sè.
Pure quando si è “innamorato” di Ben, mi è parso come se non si conoscesse, perché si vedeva da lontano che non era vero amore, ma neanche una cotta.
Per me si è sbagliato con se stesso, a interpetrare i suoi pensieri; è vero che Ben gli piacesse ma non in quel senso amoroso, Diao si è perso sul fatto che lui è stato ingannato dalla sua stessa mente, e sincera l’ho visto pure normale come cosa perchè se uno si è sempre sentito solo, ha sempre sognato una persona che si preoccupasse di lui e che lo amasse ma nessuno l’ha mai fatto, questi sentimenti li conosco bene, anche io li sto vivendo da anni e posso affermare che sono così scema che se qualcuno mi si dichiarasse subito scambierei i miei sentimenti per amore (mo sarò sincera e dirò che recentemente ho ricevuto la mia prima dichiarazione, appena ricevuta mi sono sentita di amare in un certo senso quella persona anche se non sapevo chi fosse perchè era un messaggio su insta da un profilo falso ma ho fatto una sorta di intervista e sapeva tutto perchè va nella mia scuola, vabbè detto questo dico che comunque all’inizio mi sono sentita strana e più propensa ad amare quella persona ma poi ho scoperto che è una persona con cui parlai l’hanno scorso e non mi sta tanto simpatica quindi ho lasciato stare ma se non fosse stata quella persona giuro che io già ero propensissima ad amarla solo per il fatto che mi son detta “l’agonia è finita, finalmente qualcuno mi ama”) quindi nulla quando i desideri che provi sono molto profondi finisci per ingannare te stesso. Infatti se avete notato a Diao non fregava un cazzo di Ben quando non stava con lui, Diao pensava solo a dove stesse Palm e a fare il geloso per Palm e quella tizia, non c’è stata una volta in cui Diao abbia pensato a Ben nel tempo libero. Era sempre Ben a cercarlo.
Quando poi hanno diffuso la foto, non mi sento di dare colpe a nessuno, tranne a chi ha diffuso la foto ovviamente; molti avrebbero dato la colpa a Ben per aver mentito ma siamo sinceri con noi stessi, se non siamo pronti a combattere e non siamo coraggiosi abbastanza, mentiamo, no?! Quindi cerchiamo di capire tutta la pressione che ha avuto, non voleva deludere nessuno e non aveva coraggio di combattere come invece ha fatto Diao quindi ha mentito finendo per addossare la colpa a Diao, lui stesso si è sentito molto in colpa.
Adesso si passa alla parte cruciale, LA SPIAGGIA, sincera sarei rimasta traumatizzata peggio di Diao se qualcuno sparasse a una persona che tengo ma devo scappare subito e vengo trascinata via, traumatico.
Però da lì è tutto cambiato, TUTTO, PROPRIO TUTTO.
E proprio da lì che ho incominciato a vedere la vera faccia di Diao ed è proprio lì che lui è maturato come persona, è scomparso il bambino viziato che ho sempre visto ed è entrato in gioco un Diao nuovo, maturato, autonomo ma soprattutto luminoso, mi riferisco ovviamente alla storiella d’amore, non l’avevo mai visto così preso e tutto questo love in the air gli ha fatto tanto bene ma anche dolore.
In primis c’è da dire che è maturato sia per le esperienze tortuose affrontate ma soprattutto grazie a Palm, lui è stato la salvezza di Diao.
Diao si è finalmente aperto al suo amore ed è diventato una persona nuova, luminosa, sorridente e tanto altro, mi sono sentita fiera di lui, che poi dovrei dire tanto altro su questo periodo alla spiaggia ma ne parlerò dopo.
Quello che è certo è che sono rimasta veramente colpita nel profondo dalle sue parole in quella lettera, da lì si è creato una corazza in nome del suo amore e del suo non voler essere la causa di nessuna altra morte. Una persona nuova, più forte e sinceramente mi è anche dispiaciuto perché dover attraversare tutto ciò a questa giovane età e dover diventare così maturo di botto è un passo difficile, a questa età avrebbe dovuto vivere in un altro modo.

E se sono rimasta colpita dalla crescita personale di Diao così visibile e dettagliata, purtroppo sono rimasta delusissima dal fatto che Palm sia rimasto SEMPRE LO STESSO PER TUTTA LA SERIE, non è cambiato nulla ed era proprio in lui che volevo vedere un cambiamento.
Per me Palm è una persona troppo genuina, carina, troppo dedita e obbediente, niente rebellion era per lui. Solo educazione ai massimi livelli, per me esagerata.
Devo dire che a me è sempre dispiaciuto della sua situazione, il padre così va da lui e dice fai questo e fai quello, lui deve obbedire e si ritrova in merda e contro merda.
Per me il padre non l’ha amato a dovere, l’avrà amato da piccolo e forse un pò anche quando gli ha chiesto scusa alla fine, ma sinceramente non sono stata in grado di prendere quelle scuse alla lettera, dopo tutto il tempo a trattarlo di merda non riesco a percepire il pentimento, sono rancorosa. In tutto ciò, Palm è testardo, eccome lo è, troppo.
Non ho mai capito da dove venisse tutta questa voglia di protagonismo a proteggere gli altri e a fregarsi di se stesso, per me non valuta se stesso, non comprende che avrebbe dovuto trattarsi meglio di come tratta gli altri invece era sempre lì a fare lui la merda della situa, a ritenersi na merda, a svalutarsi, a farsi del male per gli altri, ma quand’è che ha fatto qualcosa per se stesso? Io veramente non le capisco queste persone, perchè poi lui veramente esagerato secondo questo aspetto, da ma non riceve e se riceve, riceve merda. Vabbè che poi ha ricevuto anche amore ma quello dopo che l’amore tra loro nascesse, prima comunque non è che fosse tanto avvantaggiato, per me è troppo grato, anche per la minima cosa.
Non dico che non si debba essere grati, assolutamente, è una delle cose fondamentali ma dico solo che con lui questo aspetto è così esagerato, per esempio se tipo qualcuno gli regala una matita lui è pronto a farsi uccidere per la persona che gli ha regalato la matita, vabbè che questo è un esempio di merda ed esagerato ma sì è esagerato quanto lui, solo non capisce che la sua vita vale e che deve utilizzarla per fare del bene sia a se stesso che agli altri, non solo alle altre persone.

Per quanto riguarda la storia d’amore tra Palm e Diao, c’è tanto da dire.
Iniziamo col fatto che tra loro c’è sempre stato interesse ma ognuno stava al suo posto, soprattutto Palm che pensava non si potesse permettere di fare ciò, di ottenere quell’amore.
Poi così quando si sono baciati per la prima volta, non so che dire che lì non ci ho capito na mazza, ceh l’ha baciato ma perchè? BHO, penso che forse non ha resistito al suo volerlo fare e vedendolo triste voleva tirare su il morale in questa maniera, che bho non ha senso aaaaaaaaaaa non lo so.
In generale fra loro c’è sempre stato un rapporto cane-gatto e soprattutto una gelosia reciproca che non è mai stata mostrata in maniera evidente.
Come già ho detto prima, tutto è iniziato dalla spiaggia, ceh non è iniziato lì ma è come se lo fosse dato che è stato proprio lì ad esserci stata una svolta essenziale tra loro come per loro stessi.
È stato bello vedere come si sono aperti a vicenda e si è creato un rapporto più equilibrato, bello, erano più in confidenza. Una cosa che non mi è piaciuta è quando si sono decisi a diventare una coppia, non che odiassi questa cosa, ero felicissima di ciò, ma quello che proprio non mi è piaciuto è il “siamo fidanzati solo su quest’isola”, a sentire questa affermazione mi erano venuti tanti dubbi su come sarebbe stata la situazione una volta finita la permanenza alla spiaggia, e sinceramente non è neanche bello da dire, se vi amate e state assieme, non importa il dove e il quando, state assieme e basta. Non è bello mettere questi confini, fa sembrare tutto molto finto e per questo ero molto preoccupata, alla fine questa cazzata non è valsa al di fuori della spiaggia, fortunatamente perché sennò li ammazzavo.
Quando poi è venuta la scena del litigio sugli scogli, lì un casino. Ci sono rimasta veramente di merda che abbiano sparato alla madre di Palm, non si meritava ciò, e sono dovuti pure scappare velocemente, quindi neanche il tempo di potersi rendere conto di quello che stava succedendo e si mettono a litigare; ceh per me non è stato buono il tempismo di Diao nel voler litigare perchè Palm stava in una situazione veramente delicata, non era il momento per fargli capire che lo stavi lasciando anche te.
Per me Diao è stato veramente duro, ha detto delle parole molto crude, parole che Palm non meritava affatto e sarò sincera se dico che alla fine capisco pure perché Diao le abbia dette, dopo tutto quello che stava succedendo si è reso conto sempre di più di essere una delle principali cause di morti e incidenti vari, tutto per la sua vita, deve essergli sembrato veramente brutto e ingiusto come tante persone si stessero facendo male per tenerlo in vita e avrà pensato che non se lo meritava, queste sono le motivazioni per cui poi scriverà la lettera da lasciare a Palm in hotel. Quella scena dove leggeva la lettera mi ha lasciato vuota, mi ha commossa, si è visto proprio il suo essere maturato e il suo voler agire purchè tutto ciò finisse.
Da lì l’ho visto molto freddo, un’altra persona, e sinceramente non mi è piaciuto per nulla come abbiano sempre dato la colpa a Chopper ma ne parlerò dopo.
Poi tutto bellino perchè si sono reincontrati ma le mie paure sono cominciate a venire col fatto che quel bastardo aveva messo Palm in un bivio, però seria non ho mai pensato che Palm li uccidesse seriamente, ho sperato in lui e mi ha fatto piacere come abbiano creato un piano assieme e siano stati vicini, poi Diao è stato rapito e lì tanto shock aiuto.
La cosa che mi è dispiaciuta è stata la lettera da parte di Palm, mi ha ricordato un botto la lettera di Diao e le mie sensazioni sono state le stesse ma sarò sincera se dico che per me era da fare, ne hanno passate così tante che un periodo di pausa a riflettere e metabolizzare il tutto ci voleva, inutile fare, ci voleva eccome, tanto poi si sapeva che era impossibile non si incontrassero più.
Quindi nulla, nell’insieme mi sono piaciuti un botto, l’unica cosa che mi ha dato perennemente fastidio è il fatto che anche se fidanzati, Palm continuasse a chiamare Diao con gli onorefici, era fastidioso sentirlo dire così ma allo stesso tempo è anche vero che questa piccolezza rappresenta molto il personaggio di Palm.

Per quanto riguarda Chopper, lui è MIO, IL MIO AMATO, TUTTO MIO, LO AMO.
Sinceramente ho sempre visto in Chopper una brava persona, si è sempre dato da fare e ha sempre amato e stato fedele alle persone a cui teneva.
Per questo mi ha reso triste vedere come fosse maltrattato, in primis dal padre che buttava sempre merda e osava pure dire che era tutto per il figlio, che scusa di merda. Ho sempre pensato fosse un padre di merda, Chopper non ha mai voluto quella vita, è nato in quella famiglia e non ha potuto fare nulla se non decidere che tipo di vita volesse vivere e lui non ha MAI voluto tutto quel potere che voleva padre, Chopper voleva solo costruirsi un qualcosa da solo, con le proprie forze e in modo onesto, se fossi stata sua madre ne sarei stata molto fiera. È vero che i genitori fanno molti sforzi per cercare di dare ai propri figli una vita migliore ma l’atteggiamento di suo padre era veramente assurdo nel voler far passare questa cosa come un beneficio al figlio quando in realtà lo stava facendo solo per sé; il padre voleva solo buttare in mezzo anche il figlio, manipolarlo per metterselo dalla sua parte e sinceramente mi ha fatto piacere che Chopper non si sia fatto influenzare.
Una cosa che sicuramente ho odiato è il fatto che tutti dessero la colpa a Chopper per le azioni del padre, capisco che sia suo figlio ma ciò non significa che ha il potere di fargli cambiare idea, ci ha provato ma il padre è dannatamente testardo, si è anche messo contro il padre arrivando a puntargli una pistola contro, Chopper ha fatto di tutto ma pare che nessuno l’abbia capito e quindi continuava a subirsi la merda degli altri che, non avendo coraggio, invece di buttare merda al padre, lo facevano al figlio.
È veramente un personaggio sottovalutato dagli altri personaggi.
Inoltre, riguardo la questione amore, vi giuro ho sentito il suo dolore, tantissimo. Con Ben diciamo che non mi è mai sembrata una cosa che potesse funzionare perchè proprio non si capivano, neanche in amicizia potevano stare. In ogni caso mi ha fatto veramente scazzare come li abbiano fatti stare felici per tipo 2 secondi e poi boom, Ben che gli butta merda addosso lasciandolo. Mamma mia che ho dovuto sopportare, alla fine è stato carino che stessero insieme ma bho non so che pensare.

In ogni caso quest’ultima parte su Chopper l’ho scritta solo adesso che è passato tanto tempo da quando ho visto la serie. Quando la finii incominciai a scrivere qualcosa ma con la scuola in mezzo non avevo finito di scrivere la recensione e per questo non l’avevo pubblicata. Data la situazione adesso non ricordo se allora volessi parlare di altro quindi la lascio così.

Qualcosa non ha funzionato

Non conoscevo gli attori protagonisti, o meglio, prima di guardare "Never let me go" avevo notato Phuwin in "The wrap effect", tuttavia ho notato che la sua recitazione manca di qualcosa, ogni espressione, positiva o negativa che sia sembra forzata.
La recitazione di Pond è decisamente migliore, ma anche lui a volte piuttosto che sembrare finto mostrava espressioni che c'entravano poco con la situazione nelle quali avvenivano.

La trama non ha senso.
Piena di situazioni a caso, forzate e come qualcuno ha già detto che calcano l'onda della più famosa serie BL a sfondo mafioso (si, sto parlando di KinnPorsche), che però non seguono un filo logico.

ALLERTA SPOILER

Non capisco che senso abbia il continuo tira e molla fra Palm e Nuengdiao. Noioso specialmente se avviene di continuo.
Non capisco le motivazioni dietro i comportamenti di Chopper. Non si può definire nemmeno di dubbia moralità, passa dalla gelosia per il cugino, al non poter accettare i comportamenti del padre così velocemente che mi è girava la testa.
Non capisco Ben, ma era il cliché che non poteva mancare per una seconda coppia.

(Wow, forse la serie è stupenda e sono io che non capisco una mazza)

Tra abbandoni e ritorni smielati, scene che dovrebbero fare emozionare senza successo, innumerevoli scene in ospedale abbracci senza una parvenza di chimica, discorsi che nessuno farebbe mai, ecco quello che definirei un disastro.

Bisogna veramente scollegare il cervello

Siamo di fronte a un qualcosa che avrebbe potuto essere di livello decisamente superiore. La recitazione degli attori è stata a tratti altalenante, meglio nella coppia secondaria che in quella principale, ma quello che veramente ha fatto più volte cadere le braccia per terra è lo scempio di una trama che per una buona metà del tempo non ha alcun senso.
A partire dalla assurdità di affidare la sicurezza di un erede di una famiglia prestigiosa minacciato di morte ad un ragazzo della stessa età che, per quanto abbastanza energico, è pur sempre cresciuto fra pescatori e non ha alcuna esperienza in merito, passando per tutte le varie circostanze in cui, specialmente, verso la fine, le guardie del corpo c'erano ma mai quando servivano, transitando per un soggiorno sotto mentite spoglie in un resort, al solo scopo di fornire allo spettatore l'idea di una luna di miele, gran parte di quello che accade è buttato lì con ben poca logica.
La stessa cinematografia lascia spesso a desiderare, stranamente proprio nelle scene di spiaggia dove ci dovrebbe essere il sole, dove tutto dovrebbe essere illuminato, i colori virano verso un grigio giallastro malsano che da l'idea che invece che il sole ci siano sempre solo nuvole. Non che sia di fondamentale importanza, ma la sensazione che si ha è comunque di sgradevolezza, come di un filmato degli anni 70 o 80.
Purtroppo anche la maturazione dei personaggi lascia abbastanza a desiderare. Nueng verso la fine fa il figo ma senza troppa convinzione e non la racconta a nessuno, Palm si inchioda nel suo ruolo di vittima sacrificale, suo padre è un personaggio monodimensionale e sua madre può essere definita solo come un tipo molto particolare.
Tornando alle assurdità della trama, tutto l'arco della fuga nel resort è una assurdità bella e buona, i due ragazzi sono troppo spensierati considerato quello che sta accadendo a Bangkok.
Le scene d'azione e di combattimento le ho trovate francamente a tratti ridicole, specialmente alla fine, quando lo zio Kit bamboleggiava, come ha fatto più o meno per tutto il drama.
E vogliamo parlare dell'assurdità del fatto che in una scuola, praticamente costruita dal padre di Nueng, proprio suo figlio sia vittima di bullismo?
Devo rivedere i punteggi, inizialmente l'avevo valutato troppo in alto.

I molti difetti e i pochi pregi di un drama che si può tranquillamente evitare...

Una serie che si è rivelata un una delusione, soprattutto perchè valutata positivamente da utenti di cui ho condiviso le opinioni su altri drama. Attori accettabili, ma livello della recitazione proprio basic. L'idea iniziale piace anche, ma si è persa nella "non" trama della serie. Troppe le scelte forzate a discapito del buonsenso e della coerenza: abbiamo una famiglia stra-ricca, che vive sotto continui attacchi, e affidano la sicurezza dell'erede a un coetaneo? Siamo seri, dai. Manca talmente tanto la logica che faccio fatica a dire cosa non ha funzionato nella storia. Anche sui protagonisti avrei da ridire: posso salvare a malapena il personaggi di Nueng, che tra i due è un po' più brioso ed espressivo, oltre a mostrare un'evoluzione durante il corso del drama. Palm invece è piatto, statico nel suo servilismo e perennemente a braccetto con il senso di inferiorità. Questo suo sentirsi costantemente non all'altezza, essere esageratamente a disposizione, la questione del dovere - che rimane al di là del sentimento - diventa di una noia mortale. La formalità con cui si rivolge a Nueng fino a cinque minuti prima della scena finale dell'ultimo episodio fa capire quanto la situazione sia esasperata e assurda. Va bene tratteggiarlo così all'inizio, ma poi avrei voluto veder emergere un carattere deciso, meno ossequioso, più di spessore. Invece calma piatta. Si limita a seguire Nueng come un'appendice, dando di tanto in tanto prova di forza fisica, per poi tornare a vegetare al seguito del suo assistito. Altra pecca fastidiosissima, l'aspetto sonoro. Non tanto per la qualità delle musiche, quanto perchè al cambio di scena si interrompevano tanto bruscamente da farmi controllare di non aver messo in pausa per errore. In conclusione, c'è decisamente molto di meglio da guardare.

A tratti… Vegas e Kinn

Allora, non so come fare la recensione a questa storia. Perché parti mi sono piaciute molto e altre… insomma. Posso dividerlo in tre parti: la prima, dove mi hanno irritato ogni singolo personaggio, la seconda (o luna di miele) che è carina e la terza che dovrebbe essere una specie di Kinn e Porsche light. Insomma overall non è male, consigliata e gli attori sono bravi e hanno molta chimica (addirittura ho rivalutato di parecchio anche Perth, che non mi aveva mai convinto fino in fondo). A parte le musiche che, non so per quale ragione mi cringiavano leggermente in inglese devo dire ben eseguito. Solo… il filtro seppia veramente? Il problema si pone perché io sono passata da ViceVersa che è pieno di colori a Never Let Me Go che sembra un film ambientato nel Messico dei peggio spacciatori… non so, quei toni anche soft erano perfetti per la parte luna di miele, ma avrei voluto qualcosa di più intenso nelle altre scene (anche se ho apprezzato le scene dove i grandi enti erano sul viola/rosa). Ecco, si capisce vero che la mia recensione è fatta un po’ così, però… consiglio.

Makes as much sense and is about as entertaining as an 80's song medley

This may start off as a youth romance but pretty fast takes a turn to the kids acting like adults, with adult gangster problems... or is it corruption, murder CEO problems?

Though the drama does have some fluff and a whole lot of cliches, what strikes me the most is the dim beige/grey lighting that ads a slightly depressing filter to the drama... And even though they spend a lot of time at the beach I feel like I keep missing the sun.

The acting could be better, there are some sweet well preformed moments here and there but neither of the leads are very good with facial expressions and emotions. That said both are pretty good at delivering physical scenes as well as action and tension. However the moment they are supposed to feel something it just becomes cringey be it sadness, love (not lust though), anger... It just feels off....

If I were to play a drinking game about finding lines from 80s song, show of abs or the words I will always love you, I would need to get my stomach pumped by the 9th episode or so as the "always", and love confessions come as often as (I will let you use your imagination), only to be disproved over and over again... I love you, I will now leave you, I will always love you... I will run away and if you love me you will not look for me... over and over again or at least that is what it feels like...

That said it is an ok watch, mostly entertaining and fun to watch just make sure to turn off your brain before you start watching it as nothing is consistent, nothing makes sense and the lack of scars as well as the healing power of those young men can put Connect (the drama/webtoon starring Jung Hae In) to shame.

the writing did not support the interesting premise

Overall: I was super excited for a twisty action thriller but the nonsense/cliche plot turned this into just another teenage GMMTV BL series. Aired on GMMTVs YouTube channel.

Content Warnings: murders, attempted murder, beaten up/violence, bullying, blackmail, manipulation, unwanted public outing, drugging, kidnapping

What I Liked
- that the first scene wasn't a flashback or flash forward
- the beginning/first episode hooked me
- Chopper and Ben (Perth did a great job)
- production value (minus my quibbles in Room For Improvement)

Room For Improvement
- there is a lot of nonsense plot things, some of which could have been explained with a few lines or a short scene and that makes it even more ridiculous (one example, a highschooler is a full time fisherman and he happens to fight and shoot a gun really well)
- characters don't feel realistic or have realistic reactions (Palm's interaction with his mother as an example, both of them just chillaxing on their beach vacation instead of how I think most people would be feeling)
- I wanted some plot twists or for this to be different but it's a standard GMMTV romance with window dressing
- the night scenes were too dimly lit, a couple of times the music was too loud over the dialogue
- it dragged in many places, I wanted an action/thriller and this was not it
- Chopper and Ben felt very rushed at the end
- overall I just didn't end up feeling much of anything, scenes that were supposed to make me sad didn't because of the huge plot holes

Well, that happened.

I enjoyed Fish Upon the Sky, and while I noticed the shortcomings of the acting, both leads had good comic timing, and there were good secondary characters to help carry the weight, plus Pond is gorgeous and Phuwin isn't far behind, so I was looking foward to this - I thought for sure it would be campy fun, with a billionaire heir that everyone is trying to kill having also to get through high school.

Unfortunately, the production takes itself very, very seriously, which makes this a cringey, plot-hole ridden mess of inauthentic emotion and weak acting, and the end result is a series that's alternatively frustrating and boring.

It wants badly to be a PG-rated KinnPorche, but somehow missed the campy outrageousness of that series, which made it's giant plot holes features rather than bugs. Here, everything is a plot hole. The violence is gratuitous, very poorly integrated into the story, and without creating any stakes at all, while leaning heavily on cliches and contrivanaces that are just incongruous and silly.

For example, why is this set in high school? What possible reason for this is there other than "BL needs to be set in school"? Why is a billionaire heir that everyone is trying to kill even in high school? Instead of endangering the lives of the entire student body, why not home school, or just not go to school at all, given he's stupendously rich and has a business empire to run (after he's done with swim practice and his homework)? If he's in danger, why would you give him only a teenaged fisherman as a bodyguard? If you're going to do that, shouldn't he at least be able to protect his charge? Palm can't even fend off bullies at a ballroom dance! (Speaking of which, who goes to a ballroom dance at a senior center to pick fights, and why did everyone just stand around while the ballroom dance thugs [sigh] try to beat someone to death for virtually no reason whatsoever except to insert violence?) Being kicked for half an hour only gives Palm a few scratches, so this is an early indicator that there are absolutely no stakes in this series.

Early on, Neung's mother is gunned down at point-blank range by assassins that simply ride through the open unguarded gates of the mansion - I guess nobody thought to increase security after her husband was gunned down - drive to within 3 meters and open fire. And fail to kill anyone or even wound Palm's father (I think. He seemed totally fine afterwards). The boys are sent to a fabulous beach resort to "hide" for their safety, where they frolic all day and Nueng proclaims he's never been happier in his life. Never been happier than the week after he had both his parents gunned down before his eyes and is fleeing certain death? OK, I guess we all have our standards of happiness, and he never gives his mother a thought during this time, so maybe he just doesn't like her.

There is absolutely no plot purpose to the entire beach resort section of the story - it's simply a contrivance to give the couple a honeymoon, because that's where it goes in the formula, whether or not it makes sense. From the wreckage of the underlying novel behind the script, it looks like the author's intention was to put Nueng through hardships which harden and mature him so that he can return and take on his enemies, but all he does is pay off a loanshark and let Palm's mother sacrifice herself to save them after Nueng completely stupidly uses an ATM and then doesn't immediately leave, allowing the baddies plenty of time to stealthily sneak up with a bunch of thugs dressed all in black at a beach resort walking around with photos loudly asking "has anyone has seen these two boys?" Sigh.

Nueng then dumps Palm with the "find a good woman who you can be happy with" cliche which makes me want to BURN THINGS DOWN. Then they get back together because Palm does the "nonconsensual hug from behind" stupid cliche which makes me want to burn more things down. Then Nueng dumps him in his sleep - sleep induced by pills Nueng buys from the sleeziest and shadiest sex motel manager he could find and then puts in Palm's beer. Sure, why not? Nothing could go wrong with that plan. Besides, Nueng is rich, so he could buy his way out of a charge of negligent homicide. Later on it's Palm's turn for a contrived breakup - the third time's the charm, right? I don't know about you, but if you break up three times for completely stupid reasons in the first month of your relationship, are you really meant for each other?

Anyway, Nueng goes home surrounded by bodyguards, and the story more or less picks up where it left off, which raises the question, what are the stakes? Why didn't Nueng have bodyguards before? If it was that easy for a high school kid to seize control of a giant business empire, why didn't he do it before, when he had Palm's father to lean on and help and guide him?

Then, the authors seem to think that walking in slow-motion, speaking in a deeper voice, and being stern is "maturity", when his underlying behavior is foolish, ungenerous, short-sighted, and otherwise stupid. If you want to seize power, do you march around in dark suits and make grand entrances everywhere and go out of your way to announce yourself and your intentions and humiliate and anger your enemy, or do you take him by surprise?

Anyway, Nueng makes a grand slow-motion entrance to his family's hotel accompanied by that "inception blast" - you know, that loud BWAAAAAA! that plays in movie previews whenever something big happens, in order to lend it weight. So he does that, gives a dressing down to his usurping uncle, and announces he's taking power over the family empire. So what's the next scene? The exact same BWAAAAAA! slo-mo entrance... at his high school. Wow, big man, intimidating high school students with hired bodyguards.

From the moment of his return, everything "meaningful" he says is accompanied by the BWAAAAA!, a musical "mic-drop", as if that gives gravitas to his banal pronouncements. Then he's reuinted with Palm at a derelict building - it turns out Palm has been following him around from about 5 feet away for two weeks, which somehow Nueng's guards failed to detect (and so did Nueng) - because a tall, smoking-hot man dressed all in black and a leather jacket every day in tropical weather isn't noticeable or anything. Also, a photographer follows them into the building, again slipping past the bodyguards. I don't think a single bodyguard managed to guard even one body the entire series.

There are lots of other things that just ring untrue, major and minor. For example, someone suffers multiple gunshot wounds. So what does his boyfriend do? Apply pressure to the wounds to limit the bleeding, you might guess? No, he does what any responsible adult does wth a crying baby, and shakes him vigorously and demands he be OK. I suppose it could be an act of love to try to accelerate his bleeding out so he doesn't suffer, but in that case it might be faster to just shoot him a few more times, Almost comically, it turns out the gunshot victim has a spinal injury - yeah, no sh$%, someone was violently shaking him. I suspect our instinct to staunch bleeding is exactly that, instinct - we've evolved to just automatically know to do that. His behavior is only understandable in the context of some sort of narcissistic psychotic disorder - fear of being alone overpowers basic instinct - perhaps to be expected in a person who has the best time of his life right after his parents are gunned down.

And can someone PLEASE explain the Christmas carols. It's very diffiult to concentrate on what's happening when Joy to the World is playing in the background. Why does this keep happening in BL?

Phuwin is good at comedy, but his lack of acting ability is glaring in a dramatic role where he has to play high school Michael Corleone (The Godfather is the clear inspiration for this series - from the romantic exile to the hospitalized parent in danger, to the son who wants nothing to do with the business eventually being forced to take it over and become ruthless. Well, ruthless-ish). This is underscored by the poor casting choice of Perth Tanapon as his cousin Chopper - poor, I say, because Perth is so phenomenal that it's embarassing to see them together in a scene. If he and the also-able Chimon had been in the main roles, instead of criminally underused secondary characters, this series would have been on fire. As it is, the dynamic between Chopper and his father is the most compelling element of this drama and should have been given much more time (Chopper's father is played by super-hot Nat Sakdatorn - don't believe me? Check out his instagram).

In the first few episodes Pond surprised me - he seemed much improved in acting skill, but then he just spent the entire series looking like a kicked puppy, which he does well, but it gets dull.

This is not all bad. The production quality is fairly high, Pond and Phuwin spend a LOT of time in swim trunks, which is really, really good eye-candy, Perth, Chimon and Nat nail every scene they're in, and there are cute scenes between Nueng and Palm, although their romantic chemistry is close to nil, they do have great buddy-energy. If you're a Phuwin & Pond fan, you will probably really enjoy this. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

One of the better Thai BLs I've seen in more than a year!

Despite all the negative comments I read here on MDL, I really liked this one and am going to miss it. Here are my pros and cons:

PROS

STORY. Yes, that's right. Sure, there were some moments that suspended belief, but what Thai BL doesn't have those? For the most part, I found this compelling. And, contrary to so many BLs, it actually HAD a story (yes, I'm looking at you, Bad Buddy). Even better, everything was wrapped up in the end, and with no cliffhangers.

ACTING. I really had no issues with the acting. Nat was great as the villain, as was Perth as his conflicted son. Phuwin played his lead role respectably, with some really good moments here and there. Pond was pretty good, as was Chimon (in a part that gave him little to do). And Pawin was delicious as the conniving and underhanded Phum.

OST SONGS. Phuwin has a beautiful voice and I loved his OST. Pond singing was surprisingly pleasant and I enjoyed his OST, played in the ending credits. (As for the rest of the music... what was up with all those misplaced Christmas carols? And that hideous cowboy song??)

CHEMISTRY. Palm was so adorably sweet and protective with Neung. And they weren't afraid to kiss with some passion.

CONS

"ELDERLY" PEOPLE. That dance class for the elderly! The oldest person I saw looked to be maybe 45. What's the life expectancy in Thailand, 48?

"JUST SHOOT ME!" It was either Episode 10 or 11 (I forgot) where three or four of the characters (separately) got themselves in a situation where they felt compelled to scream out "Shoot me! Go ahead, shoot me!" A bit silly.

THE NOTES AND LEAVING. It was annoying enough with Neung did it. It was downright ridiculous when Palm returned the favor in the finale.

Still, none of those were dealbreakers for me. I'm giving it a 9.0.

KP shippers still trying to keep a good series down.

Its disturbing when there is a mafia series the KP shippers rush to the comment/review sections to attack the ratings of what they view as “competition“ to their beloved KP. I enjoyed this series and you will be missing out if you don’t give it a watch. It’s refreshing to see some of the production companies moving away from the toxicity that have been taking over the BLs recently. Many fan are upset with the size of Perth’s role in NLMG. Why? When he finished his last BL he said he would not be returning to BLs at all. Well that didn’t really work out for him and now he is back, fans should be happy it’s more than a cameo, he definitely couldn’t carry the series alone. I’m actually surprised GMMTV gave him a role at all after his vocal exit tbh. Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. A series shouldn’t just be rated to send a message to the production company that some fans are not happy over how large an actors part is or how much skinship or negative behavior is shown. No worries, Love Syndrome is on the way for all those toxicity lovers

Annoying and subpar

For lack of imagination I’ll go with a bullet list for this one. Good things first (that’s going to be a short list):
- Perth is okay; not great, but okay, which still makes him stand out when compared to other cast members (I refuse to call most of them actors),
- eye candy - Phuwin and Pond spend some time shirtless and look mighty fine.

Now for the bad things – and there’s a lot of them.

- False premise and misleading merchandising.
According to the initial trailer, released in 2021 (and still available on GMMTV’s YT channel), as well as to an initial MDL tag for this show, it was supposed to be about a son of a mafia boss running away from danger after his father was killed. That’s not the case – Phiphop, Nueng’s father, is a very rich businessman dealing in hotels, and though not very popular (sometimes called a crook) he’s not a mafia boss. This reduced the ‘action potential’ of the show and made it less interesting. 5 out of 12 episodes take place at a high school, not on the run from thugs – for this part of the series the show is a subpar high school BL; again: not what the show was marketed as.

- Weak story and horrible pace for a pretentious show which takes itself far too seriously.
The story suffers from several things, mainly how bland it is and how it drags. Phiphop gets killed in episode 1, but it’s not until the end of episode 5 that Nueng gets on the run. The show loses momentum immediately – following 4 episodes take place on an island, weirdly separated and mostly unaffected by events of previous episodes. With only 3 episodes left to have a confrontation and conclusion, the closer we get to the end, the more things are rushed. Furthermore, the story is unbelievable – which many reviewers critical of NLMG already pointed out on multiple examples. How is it, that Nueng – son of a powerful businessman, hated and feared, gets bullied at school for so long? Why wasn’t he protected earlier? Why was this influential family basically unprotected – not just when Phiphop was killed by a single gunman, but also for many weeks after that? Who thought that Palm – Nueng’s peer – will be a good bodyguard? How is it, that later episodes – especially those that take place on the island – are so unaffected by earlier events? It’s just baffling that after 5 episodes of an uninteresting school drama we get 4 episodes of uninteresting boyfriend time on a tropical island – and that between those 5 and 4 episodes an assassination attempt takes place. The stakes are nonexistent: all the shooting, injuring and even killing of secondary characters falls flat, fake, unimportant, since even the main characters don’t seem to care about it. At the same time the series wants to present itself as serious (see the ‘serious’ and/or ‘dramatic’ music used in ‘important’ moments and scenes – I don’t recall a single time the music was properly applied and didn’t seem over-the-top), mature and for grown-ups – which fails miserably.

- Absent chemistry and acting.
The young cast did a very poor job, with Perth being an exception. Phuwin is very good in portraying obnoxious, unlikeable characters (see Pi in FUTS) and Nueng is like that for most of the series – I doubt the showrunners wanted that. Pond is a bit better, but it’s not acting – he’s not as wooden and lifeless as I feared he’ll be, but the only reason you can watch it is because he’s goodlooking. Chimon is mostly uninteresting and at times irritating; same goes for June, who’s character was both written and portrayed as annoying. Nat plays the least intimidating villain ever, and Pawin is generally underused and doesn’t seem comfortable playing a bad guy. Jeeez, this show really comes from the same company which employs Nanon, Ohm, Khaotung, First, Fourth, Gemini or Mix, who – despite of being amateurs – can express more with a short grin or brief gaze than this entire cast?
As with many BLs, the show could have been saved by chemistry between the characters – it usually falls to the main couple to generate most of it. Unfortunately there’s no chemistry between Pond and Phuwin. There was barely any of it in FUTS and in their “Little BIG World” they gave me a vibe of two office workers forced to complete a project together (compare this to Earth and Mix, who seem to have genuine fun working with each other on EarthMix Space and their BLs). Chimon and Perth never felt like a couple and their chemistry is nonexistent.

To sum it up: NLMG is a disappointing, boring and annoying BL; steer clear of it unless you’re a diehard PondPhuwin fan.

You won't even know what hit you

NLMG is not only backed by a compelling storyline (romance or otherwise), great characters, and exceptional BL chemistry – it’s also beautifully produced. With plenty of aesthetically-pleasing shots soaked in warm tones, it’s reminiscent of a doomed summer romance.

The obvious main conflict in the show stems from external danger – the threat posed to the Kittrakulmethee family in the midst of a power struggle. But the second, more understated conflict is the power imbalance between Neung and Palm’s family that takes on a class dimension. This is where NLMG proved to be different from other bodyguard storylines.

In NLMG, character development is most pronounced for the young heir forced to grow up in treacherous times. Neung initially comes off as a typical, sheltered (maybe even bratty at times) rich kid but the later episodes will draw out the best of his character. Even on his worst days, Neung is constructed to be likeable and painfully human through it all.

The relationship between Palm and Neung develops at an even pace, with both parties falling (and falling hard) over the course of several delightful episodes. They also have a wonderful chemistry and compatibility – the both of them are fighters at heart; Palm with his fists, and Neung with his wits and spirit.

I enjoyed this show because it was a beautiful, beautiful emotional trip. Some particularly heartwrenching sequences from Pond and Phuwin hit me with some profound emotions that my words cannot adequately capture.
