‘Escape’ promises a thrilling premise with underwhelming ending
An NK soldier planning to defect to south ends up playing tom and jerry with his superior instead.
The two characters are intriguing and the homoerotic tension between the two keeps the movie alive. Yet it feels that we were robbed more of them because the movie is 90mins short and our protagonist has to be in SK by the end of it.
Nevertheless, performances by Jehoon and Kyohwan make it worth your time. I felt the thrill and terror but couldn’t share protagonist’s joy in ending scenes. Perhaps because it’s unbelievable that a defector would get his shit together under an year especially one that lost his comrade.
