A fun ride but very shallow

Like any other work by this director more focused on an adult and hot narrative, Deep Night is a series that succeeds in bringing beautiful and charismatic actors, an interesting plot and excellent kiss scenes. But it also has the same defects: a poor script, a development full of plot holes and simplistic resolutions. Oh, and let's not forget the excess of kissing scenes inserted to resolve any conflict in the plot.

I like the story and the potential it has, but it's all thrown in here. The character who suffers most from this is Khem. He is introduced as a rich, arrogant man who hates his mother's club (for reasons that the series does not explore in depth), but all of this is put aside after seeing a performance by Wella. There is no development of his arrogant personality for him acting in a kind way, there is no development of his relationship with his mother and the club. Things happen from one scene to another without the slightest narrative logic.

But what bothers me is how nothing has any impact on the plot. Khem discovering that Wella is a host. Pan finding out about Khem and Wella working at the club. Wella finding out about Khem's mother. His mother finding out they broke the no-dating rule. The hosts discovering Khem and Wella's secret relationship. NONE, absolutely none of this has any impact on the story.

And this becomes very evident at the end when the whole problem with the police is magically resolved with an event where they do the same thing they always do in the club performances. The series tries to open up a conversation about hosts and prostitution, but none of the characters or the plot really manage to address this in the slightest.

It's as if the series is ashamed or afraid to associate itself with the term prostitution.

Another point that I find unbearable is this problem with the police. It's repetitive, there's no sense of danger, the person behind it doesn't matter in the plot and it's a bit stupid to think that the police will keep going to the club every time they receive the same complaint and find nothing.

The same happens when Khem records videos for the internet with the hosts, but later the plot has Wella having problems with his mother and college because of his work. It doesn't make sense for him to hide this and show his face doing tiktok videos for the club (not to mention the countless scenes of costumers recording his face)

Finally, the infamous trisal between Japan, Seiji and Ken. In theory I think it's incredible, but the execution was terrible. It's not like the 3 of them have feelings for one another, they just stay together because Seiji is unable to choose one.

And it's a huge waste, it's a plot that could have been used to build something so interesting. But again, like every other narrative here, everything is resolved in the easiest and most convenient way possible.

It's an easy series to watch, the characters are great, but the development is very precarious. There was a lack of courage in creating a more dynamic plot, better constructed and with a bolder script.

GMM-TV for kids

Simply one of the worst BLs that GMM has ever released. It's simply disappointing how a series with 4 couples can't deliver anything.

The direction and script are terrible and can't develop or deal with the amount of characters - I also don't understand why they insist on putting scenes with 8 to 11 characters, when most of them have no reason to be there.

The acting is very caricatured and that's what bothers me the most here. It's a series about young adults in college, but they all act like children. It's extremely childish to the point that it seems like a kids show..

No character works, no character has financial problems, family problems or any problems that aren't about romantic relationships. And when these problems appear, they are so weak and do not change the plot at all. Everything is extremely shallow, the dialogues are rotten and there is no character development whatsoever.

Simply nothing happens. They are always hanging out, eating at college or drinking after classes, but nothing significant is happening. The last few episodes get more interesting, but the episodes are too long and full of montage scenes of the characters having fun that are not at all entertaining.

I really like the friendship between them and that's the only part of the plot that's really cool to follow, but that's it. There's no mature conversation and there's no reason for this series to have 16 episodes when only two couples are developed.

Tan and Fang should be the protagonists of this series. The chemistry between them, the acting, the kissing scenes - all impeccable. But unfortunately, they don't even have 1 hour of scenes together in 16 episodes and their characters act the same way the whole time, there's no variation. And they deserved so much to be the protagonists and receive good characters and a good plot.

Phum and Peem have good moments, but the chemistry between them is strange here and the kisses are even worse. Q and Toey have an interesting beginning, but then it becomes repetitive and boring, especially with Toey literally acting like a child (it was supposed to be cute, but it wasn't). And Chain and Pun have such a poor development that it's absurd to think that they only get together at the last second.

It's a light series to watch and the actors have good chemistry, but after watching teen series like Heartbreak High, Young Royals and Genera+ion with well-defined and interesting characters and plots, this is a big festival of nothing and anything.

Extremely disappointed to realize that GMM has no commitment whatsoever to elevating its series and delivering more robust and interesting productions. Let's be honest, GMM-TV is more concerned with promoting its ships to sell fan meeting tickets than actually creating good series.

Great actors but a vanilla story

This was supposed to be a sexy and hot series about two grown men in a friendship with benefits, but unfortunately what was delivered was a stagnant plot, without the slightest sexual tension and that wastes all the talent of the actors in a tangle of scenes that seem more like an advertisement for the products for sale on the GMM website.

My biggest problem is the lack of creativity and how the series decides to follow the most obvious and safe paths.

The main characters are very shallow. There is no development in their narrative. It's not like Wandee is a bland doctor who did everything for Dr. Ter and ended up being harmed by it and needed to learn to have confidence in himself. Or as if Yoryak was a famous boxer who ended up falling into disgrace after his mother died and due to his mental health began to lose all the fights. There was immense potential here but no, they're just going to pretend to be fake boyfriends and stare at each other for 8 episodes with the doctor turning his face away so as not to kiss Yoryak and pretending to like other people until they fall in love.

The aesthetics of the series are discouraging and boring. Wandee's apartment looks more like a set from a makeup YouTuber with the neon signs. The cinematography and direction are incapable of creating a homoerotic or sensual image of these two men. Where are the blood, the sweat, the bruises???

The sex scenes are frigid, the composition of the scene and the interactions between the two do not convey the slightest sensuality. And both actors are excellent, beautiful and have immense chemistry, but there is not a shred of sexual tension, there is not a scene that screams DESIRE, SEX AND LUST (with only the exception of the cake scene in the last ep) because everything is very flat and awkward.

It is fun to watch and the chemistry between the actors is engaging, but honestly, as someone who watches a lot of BLs I currently find myself bored with the lack of innovation in these series. There is no moment that makes you scream with anxiety or surprise. As flawed as it may be, Only Friends still had an excellent and electrifying start but here the entire adult aspect of the series is replaced by shallow characters who act in a childish way. There is no dialogue that leaves you with your heart in your hand. There is no attitude that surprises and changes the course of the story. It's all predictable, it's all obvious, it's all regurgitated from the same basic formula used in 90% of the BLs released.

Where's the originality? The sensuality? A boxer and a doctor is the perfect recipe for homoerotic imagery, for an enemy to lovers or a story of two totally different men falling in love. One of the most heteronormative and homophobic sports and one of the most traditional and rigid professions, and there is not a single comma discussing homophobia or any more real interaction.

It is possible to have a hot, fun, comical series and still be able to address several subjects and bring a different perspective. It is really a fine series, but it is more of the same.

It's more of an advertisement to sell cup decorations, printed pants, boxing glove keychains and those horrible children's toothbrushes than a series.

I love the secondary couple and it's a totally unexpected pair, but it works very well. They are without a doubt the best part of this series. The chemistry and the scenes between them are excellent and I wish they had more screen time.

Now Dr. Ter and Taem are two characters that are completely unnecessary to the plot. In addition to Plakao, who could have an interesting arc discussing his asexuality, but is completely ignored.

And I won't even discuss the way the series decides to discuss Yoryak's mental health. It's a joke the way it's developed and resolved as if it were just a lack of motivation for him to overcome his traumas.

And these easy resolutions are something common in the series. Any problem is resolved in the least exciting way possible.

It's an easy-to-watch series, fun to follow and the main couple exudes chemistry and beauty, but there's not a shred of originality here. It's an anemic story, without vision and with a direction incapable of creating even sensual scenes (and I'm not talking about sex and Challengers is there as proof). A huge waste of two excellent actors who could deliver a quality and truly different BL.

I confess that I have never read nor am I interested in Omegaverse stories, so Pit Babe was a series that I had a lot of resistance to start with. The plot itself has something interesting. The actors are charismatic and have a lot of chemistry, but the development of the story doesn't work.

There are two series here. The first half is a racing series and the second half is a fantasy thriller. But this whole plot involving fantasy is absurdly flawed.

There is no worldbuilding here. The series does not explain or explore what an Alpha, an Omega or an Enigma is. The story also doesn't care about the repercussions or impacts that beings with powers would have on the world.

The villain and his motivations are so caricatured that he doesn't convince me (he spends the entire series beating Kenta and telling him to bring his "children" home without ever taking any action other than sabotaging race cars) and the entire plot is sustained by kissing scenes, poor dialogue, an excess of unnecessary characters and easy resolutions.

Practically everyone here is Chen's adopted son. And when you realize the number of "children" he let run away from his house it just makes this whole arc of his persecution lame.

The characters are very shallow and don't have much to offer. The one who suffers most from this is Charlie, whose only personality is to smile and run after Babe. Even their relationship happens so unnaturally and quickly that it becomes dull. They have good chemistry, but there is no construction of their relationship.

Babe starts the series saying that his powers are everything to him, but he has no reaction when he discovers that Charlie stole them. Another highlight here is Charlie's fake death. It's a very impactful scene, but the whole revelation of the "plan" is anticlimactic and the reason for it is simply stupid.

There is potential in the plot, but it never arrives. It's a simple story that they try to sell as a thrilling action fantasy. But we never see the usefulness of these powers and the whole plan to defeat the villain is by exposing his crimes and exchanging gunfire.

There is no threat or sense of urgency here. It's not like the villain were about to do something terrible that they need to act immediately. Every time a character is arrested he escapes in the simplest way possible. There are no real repercussions for anything they do a the action scenes are shamefully directed.

And the most impressive thing of all is how a high-budget series like this has terrible cinematography. There is not a single beautiful shoot here. A shaky camera, bland lighting and ugly framing is all we have.

And let's not forget the plot twists. One worse than the other. Charlie's secret intentions at the beginning? Tedious. Way revelation as an Enigma? It serves no purpose in the plot other than creating drama. Charlie's fake death? More drama. Kenta and Pete's relationship? It's there for a reason that only the screenwriters know.

And Way's death? Another failed attempt to create an emotional scene that doesn't work because there was no reason for him to throw himself in front of the bullets.

It's a series that doesn't know whether it wants to be a hot racing drama or an action series with powerful beings. Weak characters, amateur cinematography, a script full of conveniences and poor world and plot construction.

It had the potential to be an incredible series, but it falls into a lazy narrative, without really daring to create a different and bold plot. It's a little too long to be good entertainment, but it's not a difficult series to watch if you don't care about the script.

It's a very interesting series and the highlights are the technical aspects. The direction, cinematography and performances are excellent. The main actors are excellent and I like that the story is very different from what we usually see in BL but this should be a story of revenge and not a story of starting over.

And that's where the story starts to lose its strength. Joe is an extremely lovable character but there comes a point when he becomes too permissive and makes decisions that only harm him. And when he puts himself in the same situation that culminated in his death in the past, it simply becomes impossible to defend him.

And that's what makes the series lose its strength, especially at the end. It's a serious problem when your main character doesn't evolve. And on the other hand, we have Ming, who despite having a redemption arc, still does abominable things and is absurdly toxic towards Joe, which makes it hard to accept his "love."

And I like complex characters who make mistakes but the script here failed to develop this in a way that would benefit the characters.

Another thing I hate is when a series hints at other couples in the final episodes (the secretary Jim and the brother, the makeup artist and Sol), especially here when other couples would have been excellent to make the story more dynamic and less repetitive.

The idea is very good but the series ends up dragging a bit and I hate that Joe decided to save Tong in the end. This was a decision that made me abandon Joe. If he had died there I would have been completely fine with it. I understand that they want to create a good and selfless character, but he ends up sounding stupid and masochistic.

This soap opera ending with everyone happy is something that I didn't like at all. It's a series that could be much better, but it's still interesting and has an excellent production.

Just a porn parody trying to be edge

Playboyy is a camp series. They want to be dark, edge and sexy, but the script is too bad to allow that. And the worst of all is that the story has immense potential and could easily be one of the best BLs ever made. But that's not the case.

The biggest problem here is the lack of development. The script (for a 14-hour series) is extremely rushed and does not allow for in-depth analysis of the characters. It's a series that wants to address very complex issues such as sexual harassment, prostitution, murder, trafficking and addictions, but the characters and their motivations are too shallow.

The entire mystery plot surrounding Nant's disappearance (a character we only see in 2 or 3 scenes) is promising, but investigation boils down to Noth accusing people without proof and torturing prostitutes. The discoveries are all random and the plot never advances, which makes everything even more confusing.

All the relationships and the problems arising from them are equally shallow and unrealistic, in part because the characters look at each other, talk dirty and are having sex. Two scenes later they are in love, but the series doesn't bother to show it. There is no sexual tension, no flirting, no tension or sense of danger in the mystery, no nuance. Everything here is raw, played out on screen and explored in an extremely dramatic and obvious way.

Each episode has around 5 to 6 sex scenes that are terrible. It's like watching a porn parody and the attempt to do something daring gives the impression that these scenes were created by a teenager who just discovered pornography.

It's exhausting to follow a series where 95% of the content is sex scenes or bad dialogue that revolves around sex. It's a script extremely obsessed with its own theme. The prostitutes are there to show off their bodies and that's all the series allows them. The students are spoiled and almost all of them are committing a crime or being toxic and whiny.

Zouey and Teena are a couple that happens very quickly and after the fifth episode they practically serve no purpose in the plot. And the entire final plot with Zouey doesn't make sense, maybe it would work if the series showed the relationship between them, but that never happens.

First and Soong give us the worst representation of BDSM I have ever seen. They have a relationship that starts from nothing, there is no construction whatsoever and the First being so spoiled, cruel and selfish only makes things worse.

Captain and Keen have something interesting there at the beginning. But everything goes wrong when they have Captain lying, recording and exposing Keen's sextapes and still coming out as the lovelorn sufferer.

Porsche and Jump is another random couple that adds nothing to the plot. Porsche blackmailing and harassing Jump and his relationship with Mr. Lee just means nothing in the narrative.

Puen and Aob are by far the most interesting couple. But the characters are too shallow. At no point does the series attempt to bring any critical thought about prostitution or social inequality. The entire psychological and sentimental aspect is left aside, which makes any social criticism present in the series and these characters null and void.

Phop and Nuth is another couple that I don't care much about. There is a violent presentation of Phop, a construction that there is something wrong with him, but this is soon abandoned and Nuth is there. Even the final plot with him is something that only the screenwriters will be able to explain, because there was no logic in the plot.

And finally we have Nont and Prom. A couple with no chemistry and that shouldn't even exist. Nont is looking for his brother, but that soon turns into him having sex with other men to find out information. Prom is a dull character and the final revelation that he knew everything (the fake suicide tape and the dog mask) just makes their entire arc so pointless.

The series even gets better from the 7th episode onwards and continues to grow interestingly. The photography is solid and has beautiful scenes with stylish lighting, the script has surprising twists and despite some average performances, all the actors have a lot of charisma.

But the final episodes sink the plot again and show the screenwriter and director's inability to connect all the plots and deliver scenes of tension and danger. There is no responsibility for the atrocities committed by the characters, Nont's plan is something so silly and the revelations are just confusing. The editing does nothing for this series, the way they put a supposed suicide scene followed by a sex scene is just an example of how bad it is.

The unresolved ending and the promise (threat, in this case) of a second season is the proof this series as a huge disappointment and waste of time.

What remains are sex scenes without chemistry, a convoluted script, problematic and poorly constructed characters, countless scenes of men in padded underwear and an attempt to create a mystery BL that results in a sleazy porn script.

For those who just want to see men making out, enjoy. But to everyone else, stay away from this series. A complete waste of time.

Fun but not a BL

It's a very good series. It has great characters, a fun plot that is different from the other two seasons of this anthology series and here the production is excellent and delivers quality acting, script and cinematography.

However, it is not a BL. And that's the biggest problem with this series. They create situations in some episodes and imply that Earth and Best could be a couple or that Win and Dunk will be a secondary couple, but in the end nothing happens and the series only presents heterosexual relationships.

It's frustrating - and disrespectful - the studio's strategy of using the name Close Friends (which is a BL franchise) and promoting the series as a BL only to deceive and attract BL fans to a series that doesn't even have a bromance or romance scenes.

Personally speaking, I believe that the plot would be much more interesting with a romance between Earth and Best, since both have an enemy to lovers construction.

Despite that, it's a good series, has great scenes and presents a fun story. I love the characterization of the characters and how each of them has a distinct style and personality.

But if you're looking for a BL, you won't find it here. Just like My Strawberry Film, here they also talk about being LGBTQIA+ but in a brief and shallow way and that's all you get.

Smells like a masterpiece

The first few episodes are a bit confusing and you don't quite understand what story is being told, but when the series finally finds its rhythm and begins to build Mishima and Makoto's story of friendship, acceptance and discovery, it's simply impeccable.

It's refreshing to see a series set in the 90s that talks so openly and beautifully about its characters' sexuality.

It's a light-hearted series, with excellent acting, competent production and a script full of rich and profound scenes and dialogues.

It's funny and exaggerated, but it's also subtle and conveys this feeling of discovery in adolescence. The scene of each of these characters talking to their mothers and accepting (or repressing) their sexuality is full of beauty and impact.

The construction of Makoto, her transsexuality and the dreams she abandoned to please her mother is so painful and constructed in such an exquisite way.

I really wish the series had two more episodes to explore these characters' adult lives. An impeccable series with a story that is so human, so real and so painfully beautiful.

Queer excellence

More than just a BL series, Marahuyo Project is queer excellence in its purest form.

For a low-budget series, the level of quality delivered here is astonishing. The cinematography is beautiful, the performances are impactful and full of nuance and emotion and the script delivers a story full of depth and realism despite the limitations and short length of the episodes.

It's a short series, but it manages to develop and introduce each of its characters and their stories. And what fantastic stories they are.

The representation here is not forced or unnatural, the series knows how to beautifully present and introduce each of its characters and their dreams and fears.

A much-needed series, full of symbolism and that addresses important issues for the LGBTQIA+ community. It's a series that has heart, that delivers moving scenes and dialogues, that shows the anxieties and fears of queer people, that explores love, friendship, respect and even prejudice and pain.

Congratulations to the creators of the series and the Philippines for once again delivering an exciting series, very well directed and that is not afraid to show its colors and positions.

Cute but a waste of potential

I really didn't expect anything from this series and after the first episode I was ready to drop it, but Only Boo was a pleasant surprise.

The series is not a masterpiece and unfortunately, I feel like it's one of those series that you forget exists a few weeks after watching it.

But for a series composed almost entirely of new actors and being clearly a low-budget project, Only Boo manages to deliver a solid and very likeable plot.

Technically speaking, there's nothing very interesting here. The photography is too bright, the blur and brightness filter is exaggerated, the performances are very limited and the script is very safe, but the actors have enough charisma to hold the narrative together.

If the series had focused more on Moo's transition to becoming an idol and used his time at school and the beginning of his relationship with Kang as flashbacks, the story would have been much more interesting.

It's in the final episodes that the series really grows and has a very interesting plot, but it ends up being a bit rushed due to the lack of time to develop this part of the story. The script lacks balance, which makes the beginning weak and the ending rushed.

Kang is a character that I feel is very poorly explored here. His relationship with his father and his studies could be better developed and there was room to explore the character better. The secondary couple has excellent chemistry, but also suffers from the same simplistic and shallow development.

It's a series that's a bit too silly for my taste, the chemistry between the actors isn't the best and the series misses a great opportunity to tell the story of an idol's impossible love and ends up focusing more on a somewhat boring narrative but even so it's still a cute, light-hearted BL that's very enjoyable to watch.

Outro ponto que acabou me decepcionando é o casal secundário.

Desde o primeiro episódio eu simplesmente amei Jazz for Two.

Great physical comedy but terrible characters choices

It's a breath of fresh air in the midst of a year of weak releases with obvious stories, childish characters and mediocre productions by gmm-tv.

Is the series a masterpiece? No, and it has many flaws, but it still manages to deliver a slice of life series with excellent physical comedy and hilarious timing that is elevated by the exquisite editing work.

It's impressive how everything that was wrong with My Love Mix-Up works here. The refined coloring, the intelligent cuts that only add more humor to the scene, the extremely catchy soundtrack, the very well-used sound effects and, of course, the cinematography also deserves to be highlighted with beautiful takes, frames full of references and style and a direction that knew how to develop and use each of the characters very well.

Is it a BL series? I would say no. It's more of a series about five interns trying to survive their internship and prove themselves worthy of their fields while facing life's problems than it is about a romance between a clumsy intern and a cold assistant director.

And honestly, that's not a problem for me. The series is fun, the characters are captivating and the crazy things they get up to in each episode are engaging enough to give the series a dynamic and interesting pace.

But if there's one thing the series failed at, it was in the development of the protagonists. Ryan is by far one of the most boring characters in this series. I like the development that all the characters have and the series really highlights this growth in them, but Ryan was created in such a way that it's simply hard to connect with the character.

He has no attitude, his whole sweet and innocent personality is a bit too cartoonish, he never stands up for himself, he has no charisma, he acts like a child who doesn't know anything about life or even how to perform basic functions at the beginning of the series and this really sinks the character and makes the main couple end up disappearing in the middle of the series.

And that's the problem. The main couple doesn't stand out at all and they simply disappear in the series, especially when all the drama with Bah-mee, Tae and Judy happens.

And this is another point that bothers me about the series. I particularly hated Bah-mae in the beginning and she was indeed annoying, spoiled and immature. The character has a very interesting growth and I love her chemistry with Judy.

I don't mind the betrayal plot because I like characters who are flawed and make mistakes, but it was a shot in the foot to put her in this plot only to have her get back together with Tae and act in the same annoying way as before.

They simply destroyed the character and made viewers hate her for nothing. It's a plot that takes up too much screen time and has such a weak and lukewarm resolution.

The friendship between them is the strong point of the plot because the romance is completely overshadowed by the narrative. The theft of the music video and the time jump of 5 years apart are two decisions that I can't understand why they were included in the series.

And this is another point that needs to end in GMM-TV's BLs. The time jumps with the characters separated because apparently they go back to the Ice Age when they move countries so they can't send a message or make a video call.

It's not the best, but certainly the most interesting BL they released in this weak year.
