Broke My Slump!
As my headline states, this drama actually broke my months long drama slump and I am ecstatic about that! I kid you not - this is the first drama I've been able to sit and watch through to the very end in months. Hallelujah!
So, anyway, I have not watched Girl from Nowhere, although I've seen enough mentions of it in other reviews and in the comment section to know they share some similarities. Because of that, I was able to enjoy this without comparing it to that drama. I do plan on watching that one next but my enjoyment of this drama wasn't colored by my feelings in any way.
I really enjoyed this drama. I can't stress enough how electrifying and dazzling the female lead is in this drama. She is incredibly compelling and entertaining to watch. I had fun watching her on my screen. The male lead was fine. I have no qualms about his performance; he did well with the material he was given but I was watching this drama for her, not him. Generally, I'm a heavy romance fan so I mostly watch romance dramas because I can't watch anything else because I lose interest quickly. However, I didn't have that problem with this drama. There's slight, very slight, romance but it's definitely not a drama centered around the romance by any means. Don't go into this one expecting that because you're not going to get it.
So, Kiritani Sara is my type of female character. I'm a SUCKER for manipulative, deceptive, calculating, intelligent female characters who are always four steps ahead of everyone else. She ran circles around everyone in this drama without breaking a sweat and I love that. In the end, she got the last laugh. Literally. Even in death (yes, she dies!), she's still fully in control of the narrative that suits her sensibilities. She got her revenge because the male lead will go to prison for the rest of his life. She destroyed his family like she accused his father of doing hers.
The one pet peeve I did have is the gaping plot inconsistency of a 6 year old being cognizant enough to resort to murder. She's not old enough to understand death nor should she be old enough to know which poison is fatal enough to mass murder 20 people at once. She may feel jealousy but not anything else. That's the one thing that made no sense to me.
All in all, I highly recommend this one. It's short and sweet. The plot doesn't drag and you don't have to watch a drama that should have ended 10 episodes ago that refuses to die. Give it a shot!
