My journey to discover Asian BL was way too long. Starting with Anime, through Yaoi genre and western queer movies. I discovered the Asian BL at the end of 2021. Since then, BL movies and dramas occupy 95% of my watching time. But I‘m still lagging way behind in catching up with the releases. It’s probably because of the Thai industry, but I’m not complaining. ;)
My definition for BL content is homosexual relationship or heavy bromance (Chaina...) of the main characters of the story. Episodic gay relationships or male kissing doesn’t count.
For me, to rate the BL with high marks, the story doesn’t necessarily have to contain NC scenes. (Take for example most of South Korea BL).
What good BL should contain (my POV):
- Chemistry between the main characters (Stiff kisses are a big no no)
- Good acting skills (I hate it when the actors saying their lines like robots)
- An interesting plot (It doesn’t have to be complicated, just not boring)
Other things, like NC, good looks, refreshing plot, etc, are just a bonus.
My kinks are:
- Feisty bottom (Example: Addicted Heroin)
- Funny plot (Example: What the duck)
- Great chemistry and realistic NC (Example: Love In The Air)
- Sad story (Example: HIStory3: Make Our Days Count)
- Light and sweet (Example: Mr. Heart)
- Not standard plot (Example: Not Me)
- Tricky plot (Example: The Devil Judge)
