Strong and Beautiful Film
I'm astounded to find there are no viewer praises posted for this special film! Seems just about undiscovered in the Western World. Perhaps it came out just before International films were being promoted in commercial Theatres? I came across this film by default, having been asked to check the equipment in a city Theatre. I stayed to watch the film that was playing ~ partly because of its curious title and the fact it was going to be the first film I'd seen from the country of origin.Nothing could have prepared me for the 'tour de force' of this compelling story. Its many years since I've seen this film but it's stayed in my memory as if it were only months ago. I certainly hope one day to find it on DVD. "A Flower in the Rainy Night" is a rare example of Taiwanese Cinema at its best ~ fully deserving the Awards it won. Moody Cinematography, sincere performances and writing, touching Music Score...all combine to make this a film many more people should see.
While very different in story content, the closest comparison I could make is that great Chinese film from 1999 "The Road Home" If you enjoyed the honesty of that film, you could hardly miss with "A Flower in the Rainy Night". Worth going out of your way to find, and if you do, I certainly would like to hear your comments. I’ve been told its available on DVD, from specialist Asian outlets - unfortunately, I’ve never found it with English subtitles.
