I am really disappointed in Netflix for how they handled the ending of this story. I don’t understand why directors with great material that is the novel change it to suit their own sadistic needs. Yes, those of us who are fans of historical Chinese dramas know that tragedy and angst is a common of this genre of dramas. BUT if the author writes a happy ending, don’t change it to a sad one when you know it will upset your real target audience. We always read the novels and we always are mad at you. Maybe in China they have to give them sad endings because they are communists but if you’re producing a show for Netflix and it is going to reach American consumers, make us happy. I don’t know if they were trying to pull out another season but it is so hard to get all the actors to come back.

Other than that I think whoever selected these characters did an amazing job. The leads were all unconventionally beautiful, I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with Ning Yi’s actor but I did. He is very talented and he played his part well. I loved his character and he made me feel attached to the drama. The chemistry between he and Zhi Wei was amazing and that’s why I’m still bitter about the ending that was drummed up by a sadist. My other favorite actor was the one who played Gu Nanyi. First, he is gorgeous. I want to marry him, please make him the lead of another drama. Second my favorite relationship in the entire season was the one between him and Zhi Wei. He was so devoted to her and all they ever had was each other. They were their own family. Their relationship wasn’t romantic but it touched me a lot. Gu Nanyi is the definition of a best friend becoming family.

If you want to see for like the first time ever what a historical Chinese drama looks like when it has well-done American cinematic effects and elements, you should definitely watch this. If you don’t like sad endings, don’t watch.

Very sappy sweet drama

So happy to see the actor I first saw in Netflix’s revamped Meteor Garden get his own role. I think his charm was a lot more apparent in this role. The lead couple were very cute together and I was happy their romance burned strong from very early on in the drama. One thing I did not care for was how syrupy sweet it was. Like sometimes to the point of being unbearable. Maybe I like angsty romance too much but idk it was just very cutesy and yeah that’s why I’m here but make it more organic please. First time see the female lead, she was very pretty and funny and I think she held her own well. Someone is like to see in their own drama is the girl who played ninth princess. She was gorgeous.

Very cutesy couple

Oml, the male lead I first saw in Love O2O and he had such a completely different vibe here. I would have never imagined he could play a role like this but I loved him in this drama. It’s crazy how my opinion of him completely changed. And the couple has such good chemistry they are so good together. I would have rated this drama lower if it were not for the alternate ending. I’m surprised I have never seen the female lead before, she is so cute. The story was good and the romance was cute but not overwhelmingly cutesy like some of the newer shorter historical Chinese dramas

This drama epitomizes every reason why romantic historical Chinese drama is my favorite genre of dramas. It gave me everything I needed, the ending gave me closure, all the leads were gorgeous, mystical powers, hidden realms, the right amount of angst.

The only thing this story could have done better is the character of the female lead. I know she is supposed to be ditzy and naive and the embodiment of a flower but I wish she had been more powerful and more independent. It’s really hard for me to get attached to such a helpless and dumb girl. I know it seems to make it more romantic and interesting for the drama if the female lead is a dumb girl that has to be protected all the time and feminism is frowned upon in Asia but we like smart female leads who can kick butt too.

The music from this show is really nice. It’s always icing on the cake when the music is pretty. I immediately have to have it on my phone. I feel like modern dramas now a days don’t focus too much on music but we always notice if the music is good or not.

The actors, especially the Phoenix were all attractive. Jin Mi was really pretty and Feng Hua was gorgeous. So gorgeous! And when Run Yu and Sui He weren’t maniacal, they were pretty too.

Finally, this is the kind of plot that always pulls me in starting from the summary. A girl who has either secretly belongs to some royal dynasty, or inherited some powers, or was the child of some power couple, that she has no idea about. That kinda story is my favorite.
