  • Mr. Sunshine

    1. Mr. Sunshine

    Korean Drama - 2018, 24 episodes

Even though this drama was released for so many years, no other drama comes close to being as good as it is. Every aspect of this drama was executed to perfection. It is truly a masterpiece of masterpieces. The intricateness and level of detail of its characters, plot, and relationships can be clearly seen. Paired with extremely talented actors and actresses that brought this vision to life, the show called out to me at the deepest level of my soul. Firstly. the cinematography and directing is beautifully well shot and thought out. The drama is also not afraid to be realistic and serious in its plot and relationships, pulling at our heartstrings at every episode. The show touches on topics of nationalism, class systems, activism and more. The show focuses on how the characters navigate a world full of such chaos and hardships, especially in a time where the country is under Japanese colonization, where both the streets and governments alike are living precariously, uncertain of the looming future. Despite the uncertainty, each of the main characters showcase incredible grit and determination, often going against the grain and their personal desires, making inevitable sacrifices for what they want to achieve. I believe this show will be extremely fulfilling and touching for everybody to watch, and everyone should give it a try.

  • It's Okay to Not Be Okay

    2. It's Okay to Not Be Okay

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

Nobody is perfect, and that’s okay. This show is truly one of a kind. Each character is depicted beautifully with a certain rawness to them. On one hand, you may despise some of their actions, on the other, you desperately want to give them advice and help them. Evidently, the show’s portrayal of human desires and tendencies is very realistic. It shows the beauty of life, and also the ugly. The show draws you in unknowingly with its unique charm. By the end of the show, you may take away many valuable life lessons. The biggest strong point of the show is its focus on mental illnesses. The unfiltered look at how people with certain mental illnesses think, and go through life, how they overcome their mental hurdles, etc. is very well done. The show deconstructs certain stereotypes and stigmas of mental illnesses and most importantly, teaches us that mental illness is not a weakness. Because of this alone, I believe the show is worth watching. But not only that, the show also delivered in terms of relationship developments: romantic, platonic, familial. You name it, they have it. The two leads meet each other when they both carry their own personal traumas and conflicting viewpoints, but as they get along, they start to unravel their misunderstandings and begin to understand and care for each other in a deeper level. A slow-burn drama done amazingly well. A healing show that everyone should watch and feel that “it’s okay to not be okay”.

  • One and Only

    3. One and Only

    Chinese Drama - 2021, 24 episodes

    9.5

This drama perfectly executed the very definition of ‘angst’. From the very start, we can foresee that our two main leads cannot get together because our male lead pledged to never marry for the sake of the peace in the country. But, as the hopeless romantics we are, we ignore this jarring roadblock and long for the happiness of our leads. Putting romance aside, the show also delivered in terms of cinematography, atmosphere and acting. Each a class of its own, from the stunning visuals of mountains to the emotions in the actors’ eyes. The directing of the show is great. Also, this show has one of the best character developments I have ever seen. In particular, as the female lead went through certain hardships, it manifest in the changes to her demeanor, confidence, and maturity. It goes to show the depth of the show and the characters. A difficult watch, but a worthwhile one.

  • The Long Ballad

    4. The Long Ballad

    Chinese Drama - 2021, 49 episodes

    10

This drama is well executed, in terms of plot, characters, and their developments. A spin off on the common revenge plot. It stands out and is different from the rest as it makes us question: Is revenge actually the right way to go? Come and follow our female lead's journey and find your own answer to the question. The show focuses on the characters equally. We follow through the different characters' journeys and watch how they entertwined with each other. The show shows us what is loyalty, friendship, love, patriotism, etc. A well written show, and a well written romance. Worth a watch.
