Okay thanks for opening a new dedicated thread for this.

For anyone who's wondering what this thread is all about:

I was in discussion with @ASTER in the other thread about whether Turkey or Turkiye should be listed as one of the country in MDL. My argument was Turkey should be excluded because it is NOT an Asian country. I have my reasons for saying this and can explain why in the other post later.

Please only read the 2nd paragraph and disregard the 1st one. 

So yeah my point was Asian already has so many countries. And to top it off, people sometimes confused Turkey as one of these countries. This was in response to the previous posts (older) of that particular thread.

To avoid misunderstanding in the future, I want to stress that I have no problem with Turkey or Turkiye and the Turkish people. I also have no problem with people watching Turkish drama and become fan of it. I just feel a bit "off" when I see people say they watch Asian drama and it was the Turkish drama.

Why Turkey isn't Asian?

  1. Turkey has never participated in organization, federation, consortium, union, sport whatever for that matter that's formed by Asian Countries.
  2. Turkey always portrays the western life and culture in their dramas and movies. This is arguable depending how you see the culture in the first place but as a person who lives in Southeast of Asia, Turkey's TV was too western for me.
  3. Turkey people don't see themselves as Asian. They also don't consider themselves as Middle East people.

But hey bro, don't Google said Turkey lands consist of 97% Asia continent and only 3% Europe? So it should be Asia right?

I guess geographical factor isn't the only thing used in deciding which part of continent you belong to or to be exact which side of the alliance you are on. The quick examples:

  1. Hawaii can be seen as Oceania or Asia. It is close to Philippine and many Japanese resided there. However it didn't belong to any of the continent as it's part of the US.
  2. Papua New Guinea is on the same Island with West Papua of Indonesia. While Papua New Guinea is an Oceania, their Western counterpart had to be in Asia because Indonesia is an Asian country.
  3. Russia has land spanning from East of Europe up to the Japan all over the north of China. Do we divide Russia into European Russia and Asian Russia?

Here are my arguments people

  • In some post of the MDL, the admin had said that they can consider any country for inclusion but the final decision will be theirs. And for now they will give preference to Asian countries.
  • What is the basis for adding Asian countries? Asian culture or being in the Asian continent. (geographical)  ?  if considered geographically then it is correct to add Turkey here as one of the Asian countries.
  • culturally: which country is carrying its culture completely,  no one . with time  which law, culture and constitution they follow for the progress of their country, it is up to them. And this should not be a reason to exclude anyone from Asian countries. If Turkey officially comes inside Asia, it will be counted among the Asian countries .
  • If you want to exclude any country from the continent on the basis of culture, then no country can be included in any continent, because the whole world follows western culture. 
  • If I am not mistaken, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia are South East Asian countries, and I have seen their dramas are no different from Turkish.
  • I might agree with your 1 point but not with 2,3. Why Turkey isn't Asian? 
  •  Not because you are not stating facts, but because it has nothing to do with officially.
  • turkey is a transcontinental country located at the juncture of Southeast Europe and West Asia. (wiki source)
  • Whether Turkey should be added earlier or later than other countries will be decided on demand (consumer demand) and control (Management -volunteer/Moderator/Admin). I agree with both (earlier/later) but consider it.
  • Even if it is not considered Asia, this country can be included
  • Its growing popularity and easy availability may be some of the reasons for adding it
