Hello fellow MDL'ers! It's Burcu & Caspleo_svt. We welcome you guys to our article. We both believe that movies are a great source of entertainment. They are short and can we be watched in one day or 3 hours mostly. And as we can't get a lot of free time like we got in 2020 and 2021, a lot of us are taking a hiatus from Dramaland. So as a different source of entertainment which will not consume a lot of time, movies are the best alternative to dramas. As big movie lovers we would like to give recommendations to our fellow MDL'ers. Therefore, we wrote this observational article. We call it MDL'ers Favourite Korean Movies. Besides an overall list, we will also break down the popularity and rank based on modern and historical categories, with extra info in 15 different categories.

Since movies sorted by 'Top Ranked' or 'Top Rated' generate the same result, we will combine both in one observation category. When you see the list, you may think of two questions:

  • Why does the rank jump in a few numbers? That is because it uses an overall ranking system that includes movies from other countries, in which K-movies are predominant.
  • How are the dramas ranked? For example, there are two dramas with the same rating, but one is ranked above the other. Here is the answer from MDL's FAQ.

For a disclaimer, all movies listed below are taken from a search result on 29 April, 2022, the day we submitted this article for editing. When you read this article, you will see a slightly different movie, rank, or numbers on the lists, because of the time span from article editing to publishing. The difference may specifically apply for the top-ranked/rated movies.

Third, 5 out of 10 movie posters feature kids.
Fourth, 4 out of 10 movies are based on true stories.

Miracle in Cell No. 7 was adapted into a Kannada movie in 2017 titled Pushpaka Vimana. Kross Pictures produced the official Hindi remake of the movie in collaboration with Indian Film Studios. The film was also adapted in the Philippines with the same title, starring Aga Muhlach, Bela Padilla and Xia Vigor. Indonesia adapted the film with the same title, while remakes are being planned in Spain and the United States.

Hope was the surprise winner for Best Film at the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards, defeating blockbusters Miracle in Cell No. 7, Snowpiercer, and The Face Reader. It also took Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Ra Mi Ran and Uhm Ji-won won Best Actress at the Korean Association of Film Critics Award.

Train to Busan is gonna have an American remake. In December 2021, the film's official title was revealed to be The Last Train to New York, scheduled to be released April 21, 2023.

The Man from Nowhere had an Indian remake titled Rocky Handsome, directed by Nishikant Kamat and starring John Abraham, which was released in March 2016.

On MDL, there are a total of 78 South Korean movies with the Adventure genre. Which isn't a lot. But the reason is really simple. Not just in the South Korean film industry but in all film industries there aren't a lot of Adventure movies. Maybe because this genre is not easy to work with. Space Sweepers released in 2021 but it's ranked number 1 in a very short time, maybe because of the lead actor Song Joong Ki and lead actress Kim Tae Ri. Out of these 10 movies, the last 6 have below 8 ratings. Maybe because this isn't a famous genre.

On MDL, there are a total of 372 South Korean movies with the Rom-Com genre. The most surprising thing is that To My Star (Movie), an LGTBQ movie, is ranked number 2. We noticed the fact there is a 2022 released movie, Love and Leashes, that just released on February 11, 2022. The addition of new movies into the Top Ranked/Rated list makes it ever-changing from time to time. In contrast, the 10 Most Popular Movies list should be more stable. We will explain the reason later in the article.

Now we said that the Most Popular Movies List should be stable but it wasn't. We had to change the 10th position three times. First it was 100 Days with Mr. Arrogant (2004). Then before submitting we again checked the list and it was Secretly Greatly (2013). And finally, now as of 29 April 2022, we are submitting the article and it changed to #Alive (2020). And we are pretty sure by the time this article will be published, the 10th position might change again.

Two of the only ways to take off the popularity of a drama are by either deleting it from your list or putting it into your Not Interested list.

Finally, you will find out that being popular doesn't mean high rated. In this list, 200 Pounds Beauty is rated 7.5. For a Korean movie, a below 8 rating is regarded as low. You'll find out why such movies can be popular in the following observation.

Now, 200 Pounds Beauty, how can it be so popular with ratings of 7.5? On MDL, watchers mean every member who plans to watch, puts on hold, is currently watching, dropped, or completed the drama. So even though many people don't like it and end up dropping it, 200 Pounds Beauty is one of the 10 most popular K-movies on MDL when the data was taken.

We have made this ranking through the counting of how many movies (that have been featured in our article)  one actor/actress appeared in. We have given priority to main roles movies first, supporting roles second, and guest roles third. In this case, some actors had the same number of movies. For example Song Kang Ho and Park Bo Young have same number of movies so why did we rank Song Kang Ho in the 5th position and Park Bo Young in the 6th position? That's because compairing their movies, Song Kang Ho has movies both in Most Popular and Overall Top Ranked categories, on the other hand, Park Bo Young has movies only in the Most Popular Category.

Lastly, we decided to mention our 5 favorite Korean movies. The movies we have mentioned didn't feature in any of the 15 categories we listed above.

Burcu's Movie Preference:  I used to like light romantic movies. I've loved horror movies since I was born and I still love them. But for 7 years now, I prefer Thriller movies. When I was 7 years old I wanted to be a serial killer. Although I didn't know what it actually meant, then my mom explained it to me in details. Since age 8, I wanted to become a doctor. XD

BURCU'S RECOMMENDATIONS

Old Boy (2003) was recommended by one of my favorite Youtube channels and I was really hesitating to watch this movie. I didn't know it was an 18+ movie so suddenly a nude scene appeared and I believe I was really lucky because nobody was at home. So before you watch this movie please be sure that you are alone. Talking about how the movie was, it was weird, crazy, and confusing, at least to me. But the action scenes and the acting was really good.

I Saw The Devil (2010) is realistic and brutal. This movie is great. Beautiful cinematography contrasts the dark and dimly lit scenes where murders occur. Camera work is simple but effective. The action scenes are GREAT!! Especially towards the end... and it had what many would call a "bow-tie" ending. So, If you like Koreans, action, revenge, a little mystery and suspense, watch this.

Memoir of a Murderer (2017), in short, is a masterpiece. Very creative and intriguing story where the protagonist can't really be trusted, yet he is likeable and you want him to succeed.

Burning (2018) is a quite slow-paced, vague and open mystery. First of all, if you can't handle the slow type of movies, especially this one which is 2 1/2 hours long. This movie also contains sex scenes, so definitely not for everyone. People with attention span of a goldfish would hate this movie.

#Alive (2020) is a zombie-based movie. I saw this movie a few days after it was released on Netflix. What a thrilling and exciting experience it was! I feel this movie is really underrated. The content was somehow new. It showed how important social life is! The acting was really good. Overall, it was worth watching the movie.

Caspleo_svt's Movie Preference:  I mostly prefer watching rom-com or thriller movies since they can have a good amount of comedy due to the duration plus I don't have to wait for days for all the mystery to revealed, lol. In addition, I prefer watching short films more over other 2h - 3hr duration movies since I'm never able to complete it all in one go but in installments which might even take 2 - 3 days to finish a movie. Thus, I'll mostly be recommending some short duration movies. ;D

 Caspleo_svt's RECOMMENDATIONS

Summer, Bus (2017) This was the very first Korean short film I watched and made me desire for more of them. Since this was short, I loved the momentum and especially the plot! The story of a bus driver and his regular passengers was pretty heart-warming. Though named Summer, Bus; I personally would recommend watching it during monsoon season since the mood is perfectly set for it!

Two Lights: Relumino (2017) I'm damn sure many of us have watched this one but those who haven't, don't waste your time and quickly go watch it! The story was awesome. It was my first time watching Han Ji Min and of course, I wasn't disappointed. I loved how they showed some heart-warming activities that all the blind people held, especially the photographing activity. It melted my heart. 100 % recommended!!

You Make Me Dance (2021) Okay. It's already based on the drama so why recommend it? To be honest, I've watched both the drama and the movie (of course). For those who want to finish everything in one go without turning to different episodes, I recommend watching the movie. Since I also preferred the movie over the drama because then everything goes on smoothly without any interference. The plot is amazing! Though lots of people didn't like it, I loved it! What more do I want than a cute and heart-warming romance between a ballet dancer and his debt collector!? Great chemistry with lots of heart-fluttering cute moments!

Lipstick (2019)

This one's pretty underrated. I loved how it depicted what people from the LGBT community have to face and go through. How they slowly become scared of themselves becuase of how they're treated by the society and have no choice except suicide, which is a real issue. I loved how at the end the ML decided to love his true self and be proud. Always be proud of yourself! Emotional plus very heart-touching. Highly recommended!

Recalled (2021) Lastly, I would recommend Recalled to everyone! It had the perfect amount of thrill and a really good suspense which kept me on my toes all the time! The twists were really unexpected as well as the ending. Something that I couldn't even have imagined. Highly recommended if you wanna watch a movie which gives you good amount of chills! ;)
