The new Netflix series The Trunk, starring the Goblin star Gong Yoo, and Dr. Romantic actress Seo Hyun Jin, has been confirmed to premiere on November 29.
The Trunk is a mystery melodrama that unravels the peculiar story of two individuals entwined in a secretive marriage service, which is uncovered after a mysterious trunk surfaces on a lakeshore.
Based on the novel of the same name by Kim Ryeo Ryeong, The Trunk brings together Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo director Kim Kyu Tae, and Hwarang writer Park Eun Young.
This series delves deeply into the complex emotions surrounding of the characters involved in marriage — love, empathy, salvation, obsession, desire, loneliness, and emptiness.
Seo Hyun Jin portrays Noh In Ji, who finds herself alone due to marriage, and Gong Yoo plays Han Jeong Won, who feels intensely lonely after getting married. Both characters carry secrets and past losses, and their journey to fill these voids is expected to showcase the actors’ remarkable synergy, making The Trunk all the more awaited.
The teaser commences with the first encounter between Noh In Ji and Han Jeong Won, as a "contract-marriage couple." Noh In Ji, who is beginning another marriage, enters Han Jeong Won's unfamiliar home, pulling a trunk with practiced ease. Han Jeong Won, reluctantly welcoming his new wife against his will, asks, "Do I refer to you as my wife?" — displaying clear reluctance. Thus, the two embark on a "one-year contract marriage" based solely on terms and conditions, rather than any semblance of affection.
Han Jeong Won's ex-wife, Lee Seo Yeon (Jung Yun Ha), sets a tense tone with her ironic congratulatory message, "Congratulations on your marriage, honey," which underscores the absurdity of the contract marriage.
Seo Yeon's words to Noh In Ji, "Please be happy. I may be punishing Jeong Won, but I'm also giving him time off," are equally layered with meaning.
Particularly striking is the image of a mysterious trunk sinking deep underwater, followed by Noh In Ji's dryly delivered line, "The idea of marriage just disgusts me."
The teaser leaves viewers wondering what secrets lie between these characters and what truths will emerge by the end of the contract marriage.
