How to Make a Romantic Xianxia: Love Between Fairy and Devil
Hello all! After the publication of Awesome Cdrama Rom-Coms to Watch on Any Day, Blizzardahm is back with another MDL writer and drama lover, Burcu, who has watched many Thai dramas and would like to share them with the wonderful MDL community. There are Thai dramas of all genres, but if you want a fluffy or funny one, resorting to rom-coms is the best idea.
In Thai, dramas are called lakorns, excluding BL (Boys Love) dramas, which are called Thai BLs. There are also miniseries, such as U-Prince. If you wish to learn about the differences between Thai dramas, do read Brownie's article.
Thai dramas have different varieties of episodes and lengths. Many Thai dramas range from between 4 to 26 episodes, and some have more or fewer episodes. Episode lengths can range from around 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. But it is without a doubt that many of them are gems and are must-watch dramas.
Without further ado, we present to you a selection of Thai rom-coms to watch!

The "U-Prince Series" (GMM 25) |
Famous Thailand GMM 25 has been making miniseries for a while now, and a well-known one is U-Prince. U-Prince has a total of 12 seasons with only 3 of them not containing the comedy genre. The other 9 are romance-comedies. My personal favorites are The Handsome Cowboy and The Crazy Artist. All of the dramas are good and each story stands individually so you can start with any drama. High School Rom-Coms (Common tags: High School, Student) |

There aren't many office-romance-focused Thai dramas. However, four dramas that aired in 2021 fall into this category. Oh My Boss has attracted many viewers. It was average but enjoyable. Boss & Me is a remake of a Chinese drama with the same title. The original remains superior, however, it was still a decent watch. Dare to Love: Hai Ruk Pipaksa and Are We Alright? are my personal favorites. I did not expect much from Are We Alright? but it was brilliant and is definitely a must-watch for Thai drama lovers. |
Marriage Contracts/Contract Relationships Rom-Coms (Common Tags: Marriage Contract, Contract Relationship) |
Full House and My Girl are remakes of Korean dramas with the same titles. I haven't seen the other versions of Full House but the Thai version is awesome, and the chemistry is fire as well. Boy For Rent is an average contract relationship drama with hot male leads. |
Arranged Marriage Rom-Coms (Common Tag: Arranged Marriage) |
| My Husband in Law is a perfect arranged marriage drama with amazing chemistry. You're My Destiny is the Thai adaption of Fated to Love You. Cutie Pie is a wonderful example in this category. |

Youth Rom-Coms (Common Genre: Youth) |
Thai youth dramas mostly focus on the school and love life of the leads. Great Men Academy and Dark Blue Kiss are personal favorites. |
Friendship Rom-Coms (Common Genre: Friendship) |
These four dramas are my top pick for the friendship genre: Diary of Tootsies is not like regular BL dramas but is more focused on LGTB+ content. Tonhon Chonlatee has a low rating, but I still would recommend this drama as I enjoyed it. Who knows? You might enjoy it as well! The Sand Princess and Theory of Love are my personal favorites and are both hilarious. |
Historical Rom-Coms |
Thai historical dramas are not like Chinese or Korean historical dramas. Many of them aren't very long, and we rarely see 60-episode drama occurrences. You guys will get a new experience if you try Thai historical dramas. All the dramas mentioned below are worth watching. Most of them are old but gold! |
Medical Rom-Coms (Common Genre: Medical, Common Tag: Doctor) |
There aren't many Rom-Com medical Thai dramas. Here are the good ones. Lom Sorn Ruk is an old lakorn but a decent watch. Love at First Hate is an average drama. My Ambulance was funny and cute. Thong EK: The Herbal Master is not just a romance comedy, as we get to learn about Thai herbs and medication. The main couple has great chemistry. I laughed, cried, and smiled throughout the drama. I recommend this one to everyone. |
Strong Female Lead (Common Tag: Strong Female Lead) |
Being a fan of Thai dramas for a while, I noticed that many dramas have awfully weak female leads. However, the list of Thai dramas with strong female leads was still really long, so I mentioned some of the ones I enjoyed. Khun Mae Suam Roy is one of the best lakorns if you are into twin dramas. The story, acting and the chemistry was great. I just love the Female Lead of Girl Next Room: Security Love. Let's Fight Ghost is a remake of famous Korean drama with the same title. Mia Archeep is an average drama but I like the leads' chemistry. To Me, It's Simply You is the best Lakorn of 2021. If you wanna see something good and funny, watch this one. My all time favorite drama is My Dear Loser: Happy Ever After. This one is hilarious. We had a strong female lead and weak male lead. The chemistry was funny, and so was the overall drama. Gorya's kick always remains iconic in F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers. |
Sassy Female Lead (Common Tag: Sassy Female Lead) |
| When I first watched My Secret Bride I was like wow, Kao is so sassy and cool in this drama. And after finising it I did a little research and found there are many Thai dramas with this tag but all of them couldn't match the level of Suam. Gaohug isn't like the usual Thai dramas. It was totally different and interesting. 46 Days was funny and chaotic. |
Adapted From A Novel Rom-Com (Common Tag: Adapted From A Novel) |
A lot of C-dramas are adapted from novels. Jdoramas are adapted from mangas and Kdramas are adapted from webtoons. Just like that, there are a lot of Thai dramas that are adapted from novels. Unfortunately, most of them went in the other categories but here are our top picks. He's Coming to Me is a good drama. I like the story and acting a lot. I bet if you are into Thai dramas or BLs you have heard of or seen 2gether. After all, it's the most popular Thai drama on MDL. So I guess I don't have to say much. One of the best dramas that I have seen is none other than Lovely Writer. What was not perfect in this drama. From story to music everything was best. The leads are cute like hell. |
Food Rom-Coms (Common Genre: Food) |
Don't believe the ratings of Senior Secret Love: Bake Me Love. It's really awesome. The male lead has the best hair. What to do, it just caught my attention. Oh My Ghost is a remake of a Korean Drama with the same title. I personally recommend Chun Cheu Bussaba and Bangkok Love Stories: Charming Person. Chun Cheu Bussaba is a remake of My Lovely Sam Soon. It will make you hungry. So watch after dinner and at 3 am sneak into the kitchen and have some American Style Cream and Onion Flavor Lays. It's the best. And don't forget to drop a spoon. |
Nice Male Lead Rom-Com (Common Tag: Nice Male Lead) |
You know Thai Lakorns seems incomplete without a rude Male Lead who treats the Female Lead like a pillow. And that's why many people don't watch Thai dramas or try to avoid slap kiss dramas. But Thai Male Leads also can be nice. Okay, there were a lot of dramas but most of them went to the other categories. So here are my top picks. Both dramas are really different from each other. Put Your Head on My Shoulder is a remake of Chinese drama Put Your Head on My Shoulder. I personally enjoyed both. |
