The Most Pathetic Kdrama Second Leads
Almost every Kdrama has some sort of love triangle that complicates the relationship of the main couple. The triangle usually involves an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend, close friend, co-worker or in some cases a stranger. I will readily admit that although I have suffered second lead syndrome (my heart still aches for Ji Hoo), there are some second leads that just come off as extremely pathetic and downright evil.
****SPOILERS AHEAD*****
Delightful Girl, Choon Hyang - Byun Hak Do
Hak Do is one of the worst second male leads I have ever come across. The whole idea behind his character isn't great to begin with. He is the CEO of a company and becomes obsessed with a high school girl, and that whole scenario comes off as creepy and weird. Throughout the entire drama, Hak Do chases after Choon Hyang, knowing that she's married and unavailable. He tries to win her heart through the romantic methods of blackmail and stalking, but to no avail. After being rejected in a million different ways, Hak Do finally gets the message and gives up his inappropriate courtship-but not after forcing me to suffer through it for 17 episodes.
My Girl - Seo Jung Woo
Unlike other characters on this list, Jung Woo is actually a decent human being. He is handsome, kind, funny, has great fashion sense, wears cute earrings, is skilled in martial arts, and sports an interesting Japanese hairstyle. He could actually be a great second lead or even main lead if he wasn't so pathetic and clueless. Jung Woo is a playboy and lives a carefree lifestyle until he meets Yoo Rin. This love triangle would actually be interesting if it wasn't completely obvious from the beginning that Yoo Rin was in love with Gong Chan. Jung Woo knows this and helps Yoo Rin to cover this fact several times and yet he continues to pursue her. His most pathetic moment is when he invites Yoo Rin to dinner where he proceeds to ask her to marry him. Mind you, this happens despite the fact that Yoo Rin has never dated him, reciprocated his feelings, or even kissed him (what?) How in the world did he think that was a good idea?
Full House - Kang Hye Won
All the second leads so far have obvious issues but at least they're consistent. Hye Won has been in love with Min Hyuk for years, while Young Jae has been pining away for her on the sidelines. Min Hyuk begins to fall for Ji Eun, breaking Hye Won's heart in the process. Instead of handling this situation in an adult manner, Hye Won decides to throw Young Jae a bone despite the fact that she doesn't really have feelings for him-she just doesn't want to end up alone. Hye Won is extremely petty and selfish-a classic Kdrama second female lead.
My Name is Kim Sam Soon - Yoo Hee Jin
It's bad that Hee Jin causes me to get angrier than characters that have actually committed murder, but she's just that special. Yoo Hee Jin is one of the most selfish characters in Kdramaland-I get annoyed just thinking about her. She leaves her boyfriend (Jin Hun) for 3 years without so much as a goodbye and then returns expecting him to be waiting for her like an obedient dog. She gets mad and surprised to find that he's still angry about it and has begun to move on. At the same time, she treats Sam Soon horribly while she is trying to be nice and keeps another man around just comfort herself. The main reason I dislike Hee Jin so much is because unlike other second leads who either change, repent, or are punished in some way, she remains the same and is rewarded for her terrible behavior by getting a hot doctor. Karma, why did you fail me so?
There are many more examples I could give but these are my favorite (least favorite?) ones. I love the classic Kdrama love triangle and I like second leads that could potentially be a better match for the main character than who they ultimately end up with. All the second leads mentioned turned into annoying characters and in some cases (Delightful Girl, Choon Hyang) made me dislike the entire drama. What are some of your examples of pathetic second leads?
