SECOND MALE LEADS!! They always make me hit my pillow and drown in tears. They are the innocent, warm hearted and good men, who never get the girl. I mean, WHAT THE H***?? The guys only have eyes for the lead girl from the very start, they do everything in their power and capacity to help the girl, they never hurt the girl, and even worse is they wipe her tears and boost her morale when the male lead makes life hell for her. They are all that a girl would want in her ideal man: Fuzzy and warm and in 99.99% of the cases: super handsome! But still, they get trampled upon, or like they say in polite words: FRIEND-ZONED, and by the end of the show we find them sending the girl off to the male lead and saying: "I don’t care who you’re with, as long as you’re happy." Why dude? Why don’t you care? Snatch the girl and run away! However, they never do that, because that is what the main leads do.
The male lead acts like total snob and bullies the girl, makes life miserable for her, uses her, pulls her into a hug when he wants and kisses her without her permission and the stupid girl falls for it...(had a guy tried to kiss me like that, I would have smashed him right there!) The jerks and spoiled brats turn a new leaf and get the girl, and my poor sweet second lead is left there standing, forcing a smile and cursing at his timing! What’s with these girls anyway? Lack of common sense!
This is my top 5 of second male-leads who should have gotten the girls had they made proper use of their resources and had timing!
He has to be on the list, even if his love was unconventional. He was so cute, when he only had eyes for Yoon Jae. Despite the fact that he knew from the beginning that his love was unrequited, he never gave up. Neither on his love, nor on his friendship. He just stood by Yoon Jae as a friend and loved him. And no matter what anyone may think, there was a time when I was rooting for him and Yoon Jae. “Joon Hee-ya, don’t worry. Noona will always love you, no matter what!”
He’s always going to be the saddest and most pitiful second male lead for me. He is the perfect example of bad timing. He knew everything and he did everything except CONFESS. Why was it so hard to confess? If I start comparing him to Tae Kyung (no offense Geun Suk Oppa), he would win fair and square. Full points! He was neither a bully nor was he arrogant; he was simply sweet. However, what Mi Nam unknowingly and unintentionally did to him was not only cruel, but also inhumane. What’s with girls and bad guys? Why do they not see the guardian angel around them? Aaarrghhh... just thinking about him makes me sad! Why did you wait 'til episode 15 to come clean with her? Dramas are short, so please make better use of your time!
HONORARY MENTION
Two guys who did not make it in my top 5, but need to be mentioned are Lee Jun Ki as Seo Jung Woo in My Girl and Lee Tae Sung as Bong Joon Gu in Playful Kiss. While Seung Jo simply bullied and looked down upon Oh Ha Ni, Joon Gu loved her unconditionally, and Jung Woo is one of the top candidates of being mercilessly friend-zoned!
So, in the end I often think to myself: "What went wrong and why do the girls always choose the bad boys? Why all the pain and 'Friend-Zone' for them?" Well, timing is the issue. While the second leads stay in the back drop and silently look after the girl, the male leads get her attention by being an jerk to her and finally win her over by confessing first (loud and clear!). As for the “bad boy” part of the query, I'm still wondering!
So, dear second leads, please work on your timing! Plus, if you ever feel lonely or forlorn, “OPPA, I’m right here!!”
