Potential lost in a jumbled mess

When I was a pre-teen, I LOVED writing fanfiction. And I especially loved the enemies-to-lovers trope because the angst that it delivered was impeccable. I wanted the arguing and the tears. Unfortunately, I had no idea how to actually get there. And so what resulted was a string of incoherent moments, the most random and petty arguments just to get to the angst that I wanted, and my ships jumped from “I hate you” to “I love you” but skipped the most important part in between.

That was what watching this drama felt like.

I really think this drama would’ve worked much better as a character-driven drama instead of a plot-driven one. You have all the great archetypes in this cast, but instead of diving deeper into their motivations (Phukao’s loneliness, Plu’s desperation to help his grandmother, Kongkwan being associated with a murderer, Zo’s habit of hiding everything behind a smile) and showing growth, it was like the drama kept throwing conflicts (kidnapping, affair secrets, family death, a big scary mob boss, etc.) at the characters just to watch them react to it and be upset.

Speaking of which, a sidenote: nothing about the mob boss was scary. Random punches and gun-wielding minions are not enough to convince me of someone’s power and it felt more “cartoonish.”

Anyways, as the plot gradually unraveled it became clear that character motivations weren’t thought out and there was no hierarchy of conflict; the romance, which had been what I was looking forwards to most, had no logical progression beyond their childhood connection. And the murder and Lak’s “sacrifice,” which was supposed to be the big hurdle, faded into irrelevance both because its reasoning was nonsense and because everything else was treated equally dramatically.

With the situations so overblown, it felt like the acting didn’t live up to it and this is where I blame both the writing and skill/chemistry. Most of the acting (even the side characters) just felt like they were going through the motions, which is really unfortunate because this was a drama that really tried to sell every character’s pain.

Part of that is, once again, the lack of character motivations. But the other part is simple chemistry. Lak/Mai and Zo/Nink were one of the few duos with good chemistry — it was lacking with all of the parents and there was NONE between Phukao and Kongkwan.

Which brings me to my biggest character problem: Kongkwan. Her character was quite simply, pathetic. When she wasn’t crying she was looking depressed. She had no personality beyond that and honestly, Tu’s acting didn’t help — I can see her doing all the right facial expressions but I just never FELT it. Without any sort of character trait other than “I'm sad my life sucks so I need this doll” there was nothing to connect with.

My favorite character is honestly Lookzo, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that she’s probably the only character without some sort of tragic backstory, which even most of the side characters were saddled with. Despite that, Zo had best writing out of the four mains; her happy-go-lucky, spunky personality contradicting the secret difficulty of how hard it was to be happy was very relatable and emotional, and I think View killed it with her acting. Her relationship with her father was lovely to watch. June was fantastic as well, and the chemistry between Zo and Nink was also good.

I also want to give a shoutout to the child actors for the main leads, especially Little Phukao, who got some of the most heart-wrenching scenes and actually made me feel every bit of it.

Overall, the OST is good and I still think the premise has a LOT of potential, but in the end it just felt messy. The love triangle was unnecessary and they should’ve just focused on the characters healing and digging up the past instead of focusing on new spectacles. It’s unfortunate because there are really great lines of dialogue and questions about family and forgiveness, but that’s all they are — separate moments that are few and far in between.

For the 10 years they played the "Previous Film Love" but the happiness lied in the "New Film Love"

I know it sounds a little weird but this was the concept which made me excited about this. When I first knew about this drama it wasn't planned to watch this. But as since December 2022 I had decided that I would explore Dramaland more this year so I forced myself to watch this and I don't regret my decision.

STORY

In the first episode the backstory was shown in detail except the main themes which mainly were spoilers. The story progresses and shows us every characters life story. The flashbacks were done perfectly. It shows us how a murderer can change everyone's life involved to that. And how a lie can destroy our lives and all the suffering is our families.

ACTING

Kudos to all the actors. Everyone did a great job. I have seen Off, Ohm, Koy, So, Champ and Nink's acting previously in different kinds of character. In this drama mostly their characters were sad but realistic. It was my first time seeing Tu and View. I have to say that Tu still has to learn more expressions to different feeling. Her face was the same throughout the whole show. If you mute the sound and turn of the captions and see Tu's acting you will not be able to understand if she is sad, angry or happy. She is still a newbie but really hyped because of F4. And it's totally unfair. On the other hand View was awesome. You will feel the efforts in her acting. Two more people to mention. The actor who played the character of Mai and little Phukhao. They stole the show for me in terms of acting. Pluem and Phoo 's acting balanced it for me.

MUSIC

It was good but I don't know much about it. Cause I usually don't feel excited about the OST of an drama or movie.

LIKES

Honestly I didn't expect anything from this show. It was a forced watch so it's all my fault if it's not good. But It was a decent shoe. It's not the drama for which I was excited every week but if you binge watch this you will find this exciting as the mysteries are disclosed you can watch the next episode immediately.

PHUKHAO: He loved Mai a lot. Mai was his hero, his inspiration. It's was really traumatic for him losing Mai. The anger inside him is understandable. This may not be the character which will give you comfort. But Phukhao will protect you and love you till his last breath. Even though Mai isn't alive anymore but he always was in Phukhao's heart. He wants to do everything his brother couldn't do. He is always there for his loved ones.

A deeply moving, emotional tale of healing

Not without flaws because the story does stall a few times, + is really dark yet there is a settled quietness and beauty to the plot. Some of the plot can be considered pointless esp at how fast the romance between Kongkwan and Phukao happens. But, this story isn't really about romance, no it's a story about discovering lowest points in youself, moving on and healing after a great loss or trauma. It also teaches that no matter how hard it is at times, hate is never a good thing because it destroys lives. In that area I think the writers did a job even if they failed in the romance area. This series would have been better without the love story but hey most plots need romance for most of us so.....

I do think the characters were strong enough to carry this story, especially the teens. They really are the light; teaching the adults incredible lessons and showing them that as grownups they will be better than them. I did question a lot of the actions of the adults and highly disliked them. I was happy that in the end all learned their lesson and became better people because of it. I think another thing that didn't work well was the crime. I get why it was there and why it was so important to the plot, yet it didn't quite work for me. Thankfully the villains got their comeuppance.

The performances from Ohm, Off, View, Pluem and Gunsmile were outstanding here. In a series like this one, they can highlight their talents and shine. Ohm certainty did when he was meant to be emotional he pulled it off, The level of emotion this kid portrayed was amazing. View, this was my first time seeing her, and I got to say she blew me away with her talent. Gunsmile- why doesn't he have a lead role? He's been working with GMMTV for years and nothing? unfair. Gunsmile desrves a lead role he definitely shone in the final episode and broke my heart. Off is a master in tortured characters so I'm glad he's getting his chance to shine more and show what he can do. Tu was hit or miss with me, I usually like her but when she was paired with the likes of Ohm, Off, View and Pluem her flaws in acting are more obvious than before. I hope she takes this as a learning curve so she can improve more. She is better at the emotional scenes, imo than the lighter ones.

Overall, I give this series a 9.5 because I enjoyed how deep this series was and how much it made me feel week to week and the lessons it strived to show. It may not be perfect, but I enjoyed it quite enough that it goes into my favorite of the year pile. Will I rewatch? Yeah, when I need more of my Ohm, and Off or when I want to feel emotions with a series.

I wish I had more good things to say

I'm going to keep this short and vague because I feel everyone needs to make their own opinion of this one.

The plot is a mess. You can tell the director herself wrote it and not a professional screenwriter. Everything that was important at first lost importance over the course of the series, resolved or not - that's not how a story is supposed to progress. I don't want to go into any depth about the most ridiculous plotpoints but let's just say that the overall story was much better done in it's japanese original, without any add-ons, things no logical person would ever do, characters that were just produced out of thin air to make the drama even more dramatic ... it's just not good. There were also some very serious moral issues that were so important in the beginning and then just disappeared into thin air.

The editing is junky and you can tell that this production went about three months over the normal production lenght. The editing feels exhausting and exhausted.
The music is too loud always, it soaks scenes in melodrama that aren't even supposed to be dramatic. It feels manipulative and cheap and made me role my eyes more than once.

Some of the acting was outstanding, first and foremost View. She was a breath of fresh air and the only character that I genuinely loved seeing on screen. Ohm's performance was equally as gripping even if his arc relied on crying and looking sober a lot - he did very fine with that direction however, while Tu on the other hand - look. I like Tu. I thought she was fine in F4. But whether it's the script, her abilities or the fact that she was paired when incredible actors this time around: her performance in this series is not good. In fact, it's boring, one-dimensional and plain tiring to look at. She makes one face throughout the entire series. She's exhausting to look at and at some point I just started zoning out whenever Kongkwang was on screen.
The actors for the parents were all impressive in their own rights but even with them I felt like the script was barely giving them anything to latch onto. Pluem as Sai was great and I wish we had gotten more scenes with him. Off was in this show. That's literally the only thing I can say about him, he left absolutely zero impression.

The romance is nonsensical. There is no development there, no explanation as to how or why or when these people fell in love. Unfortunately they have no chemistry either, no matter how hard Ohm is trying to work his magic. They look good together but their romance is just 'there'. No reason, no in depth look at their feelings or why they even like each other. With how little we really know about these characters, that's probably for the best.

Emotional Masterpiece

It's rare that so many factors align to give us a such a beautiful and amazing series as 10 Years Ticket. This show has everything: great acting, great plot and storytelling, great music, and near perfect pacing. Be warned, this show is an emotional one and even the feel-good moments come in the aftermath of tragedy.

Plot & Storytelling - At it's core, this story is a crime mystery with romance thrown in on the sides. Early on, you get the sense of what really happened (or rather what didn't happen) with Mai's murder; however, the why and how are not so evident and you need to watch the whole series to see how it all plays out, which I appreciated. Aside from this main storyline, virtually every character has their own micro-plot happening. These plots are just dropped in wherever it seems convenient, but are wonderfully woven together. I'll admit not all of them are resolved, but that didn't bother me because they weren't throw away subplots. They have purpose and enhance the plot. Mind you this plot is dark and emotional and you can't help but root for something better for all the characters.

Characters & Cast - Although the cast is large, all these characters are well conceived and developed throughout the series. Again, each character has their own story and tragedy. The way the actors are able to portray these characters is phenomenal and none feel forced. Above all, they are feel like real people: they all have their good traits, but also their weaknesses and faults. The theme of this show is based heavily around the relationships between the older and younger generations. We see the faults and weaknesses of that older generation and watch as the younger generation tries to be better. It took a lot of skill, on both sides, to portray that struggle and I think all the actors accomplished that.

I really don't have a lot of criticism of this show. I do think at times, the plot drags a little but these moments are few and far between. Additionally, towards the end, there was a rush to resolve some of the conflicts of the minor characters and introduce subplots that hadn't otherwise been alluded to. However, 10 Years Ticket is well worth the watch. I think what I found most compelling is it left me with insights into Thai culture that other shows don't do. This show felt real and the characters and their lives felt like they could actually exist.

A heart-clenching watch for family & friendship-oriented individuals.

It’s the kind of show that will get your mind and heart to battle the constant contradiction of events and actions happening by the characters given their circumstances with your morals. It’s the way you can’t even blame any of them for the decisions they make and how they decide to treat the people around them because you too wouldn’t know what to do if you were in their situation.

This show will surely get you thinking about what you would do if you were placed in the same predicament as the main characters, hence I say that this is a heart-clenching watch for family & friendship-oriented individuals.

The acting got me in the absolute feels and really made me feel as if I was in the situation with them, making me almost tear up a couple of times. You can’t help but feel extremely empathetic for each and every character because of what they’ve gone through and how it was shown with so much convincing emotion.

As of episode 7, the romance side of things are getting a bit unrealistic. It's crazy how Kongkwan still has feelings for Phukao after all the emotional distress and forced physical contact he's made on and caused to her, but I genuinely wouldn't know since I'm a lesbian, so I'll just have to witness and see how this develops.

Definitely a worthy show to watch. As of the seventh episode, I rate it a 8/10.

Ps. I’m a Kongkwan protector through and through, so I’m extremely sorry for the person I’m going to be if someone even dares to lay a finger on her. I have my fucking eyes on you, Phukao. Y'all have already kissed in episode 7, so I'm hoping for some change in treating her, cause I swear to God, it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

I apologize for the novel....

This is a heavy, heavy drama. It’s also very, very good.

The following are simply things I want to say. Some of this is a reaction to the drama itself, and some is in response to what I’ve read in the comment section as the drama unfolded on our TV, computer, or phone every week. I didn't hit on every character or actor, just the ones about which I had something to say.

The characters:

The kids as a whole: They had developed such a loving support system for each other in their younger years that being apart, not continuing to love and support each other, was simply wrong. Their happiness was with each other.

Phukhao: Phukhao is the younger brother of Mai, who was murdered when he was young. Phukhao grows up angry, and is allowed to retaliate in childish ways without consequence. As the story progresses, however, he is faced with the reality that his emotions were misplaced, and shows true maturity by allowing himself to let go of the anger that was expected of him. I think that if it hadn’t been for Mai’s devotion and true love for his little brother, Phukhao would never have been able to overcome his pain and move on.

Kongkwan: She begins as a meek, scared child who only trusts her group of friends, especially Phukhao. She is the youngest so they take care of her the best they can. As she grows up, she never is allowed to really grow out of that due to the social stigma of her sister being a murderer. She does become a strong, resilient character though, because she never lost faith in both the friends that protected her and the friend (Phukhao) that hated her.

Nink (Phukhao’s ex-girlfriend): I find it interesting how Nink latches onto Lookzo. Despite them being enemies, Nink has no one else. It seems that although Nink and Zo (Lookzo) have bad feelings towards each other, in Nink’s eyes, even bad feelings are feelings….a connection she is lacking after Phukhao broke up with her. So she forces herself into Zo’s life, despite Zo’s reluctance.

Sai (Phukhao’s mother): She is a “poor little me” character that is pissed that she can’t make others make the same choices that she did. She ran away from love because it was hard. Because it wasn’t “acceptable.” Others are willing to fight for their love and she does everything in her power to stop them. Her tears don’t cover her hero complex.

Santi (Phukhao’s father): I love Santi’s character, but I kinda want to pop him in the back of the head and tell him to wake up. He is so self-involved that he doesn’t realize what he’s doing to his family. Luckily, he redeems himself in my opinion.

Piak: Ahh…the coward turned hero when he had nothing left to lose. Despite this, I loved his love for the kids.

Oh (Lookzo’s father): My favorite character. He’s simply adorable.

Mai: My other favorite character. He tried. He was just too young and ineffective to be able to accomplish his goals.

Sudteeluk (Luk): Although she is several years older than Mai, she and he fall in love. Since they grew up together, it’s really not surprising, even though some (characters and viewers alike) reject the morality of their relationship. (I’m not sure why there’s a magic cut-off date for childhood vs adulthood, because that’s not how reality works. I’m all for protecting the innocent and obeying the law, but love doesn’t know those boundaries, and sometimes people do things, by mistake or intention, that they know is against societal norms.) Luk was brave to try to save Mai’s reputation and prevent the other drug factions from using his death to their advantage. But in the end it did more harm than good.

**********
The actors: It amazes me that people can watch a series and have so much to say about the acting. I agree that there is good acting and not-so-good acting, but when an actor takes the role given to them and plays it 100% by that character’s background and personality, then the fault isn’t with the actor, the director, or the script, but the character itself.

Ohm Pawat (Phukhao): Ohm is an outstanding actor. He immerses himself into his roles. Many comment that Ohm is overacting in this drama, but I totally disagree. He is playing a teenager that is full of pain and regret. Teenagers are often overly dramatic, as their emotions are often raw and hormone driven, and they don’t yet have the capacity to deal with their emotions properly. This is a learned response that even many adults haven’t mastered. Ohm is playing a teenager that is raging and acting out because no one has let him/helped him get past his brother’s murder, mostly because the “adults” aren’t mature enough to handle their own pain.

Tu (Kongkwan): As with Ohm, I think Tu played her character outstandingly. Comments that I saw about her were pretty awful, and while she isn’t my favorite actress (just a personal preference) I have nothing bad to say about her portrayal of Kongkwan. She is playing the meek, scared child that you see in the beginning of the series. According to the society Kongkwan lives in, her right to be happy and involved is voided by her sister’s actions. She doesn’t get to show herself as “living,” since merely existing is a blemish on the community. So the complaints I read about how Tu isn’t expressive make no sense to me, as the character herself isn’t allowed to be expressive.

Pleum (Mai): In my opinion, Pleum was the best actor in the entire series. His actions and reactions were totally on point. (It’s possible that I’m starstruck.)

Off (Plu): People comment that Tu’s facial expressions, or lack thereof, were a problem. I disagree with that. I would say that Off’s expressions were much more lacking. I know Off is a good actor and getting better, but it always struck me in this drama that his expressions almost never changed. Just as Tu, Off was playing a character that was pretty beaten down and worried all the time. I personally loved the character of Plu, I just thought that Off's portrayal should have been more expressive, and I question why he didn't get the same comments from the peanut gallery that Tu did.

**********
Those are the main points I wanted to make. Within the drama itself, I found that some things didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I can chalk some of it up to differences in culture. The rest I can blame on it being a drama, and since I can barely understand real life at times, not understanding every little detail in a drama doesn’t really bother me. I liked this. I liked it a lot, but I cried a freakin’ river while watching, so my box of tissues is a lot lighter now.

Also: Grandma (Pum) and Grandad (Yo) are 'best characters!!!'

Beautiful Story

Although this was originally seen as a simple childhood friends to hate to love story by myself, this is so much more.

It’s a beautiful yet tragic story of a world of characters. Unlike normal dramas where the focus is on the leads, everyone - I mean every single character - has such a well built background, personality and character development.

Although the acting and music was not the best (sorry I’ve not watched many Thai dramas, most notably watched F4 Thai), it portrays everything perfectly, with every scene full of meaning.

I would definitely not listen to the poor reviews, but it does require a lot of attention! It’s not a complex plot, it’s just the stories of each character that you need to devote your attention to.

Amazing production

Before getting into this, I didn’t expect much but 10 years ticket is a drama that not only has a great storyline but also great production value as well. It had me on the edge of my seat and brought me to tears countless times with the continuous twists and turns, always making you wonder what would happen next? I also loved the way you gradually got to know the stories and see the perspectives of the characters throughout of the drama. Overall 10 years ticket is one of the best I have watched in GMMTV and would greatly recommend anyone to give it a watch!

This is not for everyone who likes mushy stuff, it is a reality of life.

This series deserves the hype it can get. First of all I'd like to applaud these talented little kids, Well done. This story is about how one misunderstanding, anger and most of all grief can break families and and friendships. It is about life struggles,
sacrifices and acceptance, but it is mostly about love. How love can make you feel weak, stupid, confident and fearless at the same time. I loved how both the FML/ML and SFL/SML potrayed their emotions, You could feel all the love they had for each other, there was no doubt they were each other ride or dies. The chemistry between Phukao and Kongkwan was intense. You could feel kwongwan's painful longing of any glimpse of love, forgiveness and acceptance from Phukao but also conflicted by her love for her big sister. You could also feel Phukao's anger, hate, frustration for his loss but all through all this you could still feel his love for her.

CRITICS

I just wish the SML had a better ending than just having his familiy and friends back. He suffered a lot too, trying to be everyones rock while he himself was falling apart. He is an epitome of greenflag that needed to be off the streets. Mybe find love, go back to varsity or travel the world.

I forgive them for wasting such chemisty with a long peck kiss but because it was a high school series and it wasn't all about romance I'll forgive them but they better work on the damn kisses.

Conclusion

I love and hate that it wasn"t a happy ending. It sets the reality aspects of life that every good ending doesnt have a happiest ending but I love how all the things that seperated them is actually what brought them together again. a notion that love always find it's way back home. They lost a lot but atleast they still have each other. I highly recommend
