SPEAK UP!

Another reviewer commented on the sloth-like pace of this Drama, but I think they exaggerated - continental plates move faster than the first 10 episodes of this Drama :)

The incredible slowness was one example of the "arty" prentensions of the Drama, where ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENING is apparently proof that it's REALLY DEEP AND THOUGHTFUL. It's REALLY not.

The whole core of the Drama is not actually about "healing" or "forgiveness" or "letting go", it's much simpler than that - USE YOUR DAM WORDS PEOPLE! Sixteen episodes that could have been 16 minutes if ANYBODY spoke to ANYBODY else, EVAH. Tedious and tired, the main storyline was indeed a powerful cure for insomnia. So why did I score it as high as 6.5?

Because Lim Hwi was a LOT of fun, bright, refreshing self-assured and down to earth. Her whiny, mopy, self-obsessed silent oppa could definitely have benefitted from being more like her. And the Jang Woo/ Eun Shil arc was also fun. For elements like that, I was generous.

Beautiful, wintry slice-of life

I love slice of life and I'm so happy it's making it's way into the drama world. On one hand we've got more big production dramas like The King: Eternal Monarch and on the other hand we've got Something in the Rain and this drama right here.

Wiki's description of slice of life is a 'narrative technique in which a seemingly arbitrary sequence of events in a character's life is presented, often lacking plot development, conflict and exposition'. That description makes it sound boring and it's true that if done poorly it is boring but when done well, and this drama has done very well, it delivers the emotional highs and lows that an 'everyday' person experiences.

This drama sets up that emotional experience from the start - in the title 'I'll go to you when the weather in nice'. What do you feel when you hear that? For more context how do you feel when looking at the poster of a snowy day with 2 people standing together staring out at the snow with their backs against a warmly lit building. Can you imagine those days where it's freezing but the snow is beautiful and relaxing, holding a cup of hot chocolate and staring out at the snow drifting, falling? If not snow, how about a rainy day? At your back is a warm heater that is safe and cosy and by your side is your best friend, your partner, who is all you need in dreary times, your comfort and your shelter.

The characters were great and there were all these little nuances that were needed to truly bring these characters to life. The cast delivered more than I ever could have expected. I've always known Seo Kang-joon to be amazing but Park Min-young was a surprise, she may be a veteran and Healer may be my favourite drama but I'd not have expected to see her being able to pull off the despondent, quiet Mok Hae-won. Her characters have always had more spunk.

I loved Kim Hwan-hee as Im Hwi, her character was the light of the drama as much as Im Hwi was for her family. Lee Jae-wook came out of nowhere last year and he is killing it. I went from watching Extraordinary You to this and did a double take at how different he was.

It was amazing how I was feeling those cold snowy days where you feel so alone and wonder what am I doing here, I have no where to go. But I was also feeling those warm moments of discovery and joy especially in the scenes where they would all gather next to a fire in the middle of a cold snowy night and chat and laugh while eating hot snacks and drinks. I travelled with Mok Hae-won through this journey and it was wonderful.

The music is as beautiful, soft, sweet and comforting as the drama is. Unlike other dramas they might use loud music for a dramatic moment, this one does the opposite and cuts off that music to descend into silence. Stillness. Like the tree that's lost all it's leaves and is silent, barely swaying in the wind.

This drama is all about the little joys in life, what do we really need to be happy? To feel secure? To be comfortable? Who is there for us when we are down? It's a beautiful masterpiece balancing the cold and lonely moments with our warm serendipitous ones.

Quote: All My Firsts by Cha Yoon Taek
Do you know what warmth is?
She asked me, and I answered
It's when my cold hand touches your cold hand and we both become warm.
When loneliness meets loneliness and becomes cosiness.
When sadness meets sadness and becomes happiness.
When a cool breeze collides against another cool breeze and becomes soft snow.
That's what warmth is.

Seo Kang Joon's handsomeness captivates me!

I hundred-percent agree with another reviews of this drama saying that When The Weather Is Fine is a slow-paced melodrama. The whole story was built little by little, I guess, so us the audience can get the real feeling of this drama.

The set took place in a peaceful village where the neighborhood is warm. Not forget to say that the snowy season really supports the ambience of the movie. It's like expressing the contrary: on the coldest season, you feel the most warmth.

What I learnt a lot from this drama is loving someone in a polite way. Yes, in a very polite way. Seo Kang Joon as Im Eun Seob is someone who's very calm. He's in love with his high school classmate, Mok Hae Won (Park Min Young), for years but having no gut to tell her his true feeling. Even many years later when they're separately living in another city and can't meet daily. Instead, he pours his feeling in a secret way by writing on a blog and waiting for Mok Hae Won to come on every holiday, the only time he can see her. He keeps loving her secretly. Can you see how hard that thing is?

To be honest, at the time I watched this drama, I was in a state of enough seeing Park Min Young in a drama. I even haven't finished watching Healer because it's her again on the drama. But in this one, everything is different. I was okay with her as the main lead. And I truly adore her for her acting.

If you're okay with meaningful and slow-paced melodrama, When The Weather Is Fine is seriously for you. Plus side, you'll have many beautiful poems being read in the drama.

Victims of Domestic Abuse do not Watch!!

Let me preface this by saying that every single actor in this was on point. The writing was stellar, the characters had depth and flaws galore. They were so human and, at times, painfully so. I enjoyed the music and the pacing of the show was, as most others have commented on, slow but it was not to the point where it bored me. The complicated relationships between the sisters, the mothers and the dissection of family dynamics was very enjoyable to me as well as the romance aspect. There was a point though where I started caring less about the main character and growing more and more frustrated with her and her victim mentality. I really enjoy Park Min Young's acting and she played this character really, really well so this isn't a commentary on that. However the character arc and development of Hae Won was the most frustrating thing and in the end I can't say I felt good about how it ended or that I even liked her at all the way I did at the beginning. This has mostly to do with the ending episode and how she dealt with finding out the truth about her mother, aunt, and father. Also the way the show dealt with victims, sufferers of mental illness, and other subjects-- I was not about it. It almost seemed to glorify it in a way? Or twist it so it seemed like the victims fault. If you get to the end of this please, let me know what you think.

The following contains major spoilers and TW for mentions of domestic abuse.

I did like Hae Won's inability to forgive Kim Bo Young at first. I thought and still believe that it was justified. Kim Bo Young was in the wrong and should have apologized outright instead of saying it was just a 'mistake' it was truly a betrayal and the fact that the friend tried to turn it around as if she was the victim was ridiculous. That mistake was a monumental one which lead to Hae Won being made out to be a pariah in school. Hae Won was clearly depressed and needed therapy but I know that Korea and mental health is a touchy subject so I'll leave it at that. But Bo Young couldn't just apologize and own up to her mistake and on top of that we later come to find out that she believes herself to have been slighted by Hae Won...
However, the longer that conflict was drawn out I started to get a little... annoyed with the way these two resolved conflict in their interpersonal relationships. Hae Won especially began to seem cruel, cold, selfish, and unforgiving...unnecessarily so. A little hypocritical as well.

THE BIG ISSUE with Hae Won:
The way she dealt with finding out what happened between her father, mother, and aunt. I found myself thinking "guess she'd rather have been raised by her abusive father who killed her aunt (Shim Myung Yeo) and mother than the other way around." Was this fair of me to think? Probably not. I realize that she had been lied to, kept in the dark since that incident but when has she ever been forthright with her own secrets, trauma, and life? I never saw her have a conversation with anyone except Eun Sub about the way she was feeling or the things she was going through. So why does she get to expect that out of others? Her mother was so in the wrong, I get that, but she was a victim of domestic abuse and the drama, at least to me, tried to pin the blame on her. AS if she was at fault for being abused. "Why didn't you leave?" "I felt sorry for him." Anyone thinking that this means that she consented to being physical abused, please don't believe that anymore. This is how abuse works, it's insidious and it messes with your self views. A lot of abused people stay with their abuser for various reasons, that doesn't mean that the victim is not a victim anymore.
Further, the fact that, to my understanding, Korea would have locked up the Aunt for x amount of years for defending her own safety and the safety of a beloved sisters knocks me tf out. That man was swinging away at them, threatening them with violence and death and yet the mother was locked up for seven years and the sister felt guilty over killing the man. THEN add on top of all of that, after years and years of unresolved trauma and living in misery, when Hae Won finds out the truth instead of acting like a compassionate human being she basically tells her aunt that she's dead to her. For an accident. A mistake. Like a true mistake that disrupted all happiness for Shim Myung Yeo and she's been paying for it ever since but Hae Won takes that truth and does what with it? Acts like a total brat.

I would love, love someone to discuss this with me either in agreement or disagreement (respectfully) because I am completely blown away by how much this drama got me angry and upset by the end. What kind of commentary is that? What are we supposed to take away from this?

Mengkesel

Sinematograinya ciamik banget, sangat calming. Latar perdesaannya terasa banget, kehangatan warganya sampai ke penonton. Sayangnya si tokoh utama (mok hae won & lim eun seop) ngeselin banget.

Tapi narasinya oke!

My personal opinion only

Acting: Seo Kang Joon as Jin Ho was excellent. He didn't say much, but then he doesn't have to. He just has to BE. What he said in the voice overs was beautiful, but I kept wondering why he never verbalized any of his thoughts. Park Min Young as Hae Won - in my opinion, she can do no wrong, she's that good in everything she does. However -
Characters: Jin Ho kept everything bottled up inside. Hae Won reminded me of Eeyore, she was so morose all the time. There were some other interesting characters in this show as well. I loved the scenes with the book club meetings.
Music: The music was wonderful and went perfectly with the show.
Cinematography: There is no question that this show was beautifully filmed. The camera angles, the scenes in nature, the close ups.
Story: Here's where it goes wrong for me. The story itself might have been really good, but this was one of the slowest shows I've ever seen. I like a good story as much as the next person, but when you show scenes again and again of making coffee and tea (are we in a Folger's commercial?) or take five minutes showing the female lead walking up a road dragging her suitcase behind her, that's just too tedious for me. There was so much quietness in this that I felt like no one was talking to each other.
I would, however, say to give it a try for yourself, since I am definitely in the minority on this one.

I started watching this because I'm a stalker-ish fan of Seo Kang Joon and also enjoy dramas featuring Park Min Young. I thought Park Min Young struggled to get into her character because of the amount of melancholy her role carries, Seo Kang Joon was very good and, as usual, portrays an enormous amount of emotion through his eyes. Those are moments I envy the cameraman. That being said, all of my anticipation for the two main leads was absolutely diverted by the actresses portraying sisters, Jin Hee Kyung and Moon Jung Hee. These two absolutely crushed their parts and became the coolest female characters I've seen in a while. Rewatch value is nil for me because in the current corona-times, I struggle with shows that have a lot of emotional realism, but I would highly endorse it just for the actresses mentioned above. I'm seriously considering sunglasses at night because they made it look so freaking awesome.

so...you did all that for what?

this was a strange one. i watched it purely because i like park min young and i've never seen seo kang joon act. i wasn't necessarily disappointed since i had no expectations, but it was just too boring for my tastes. i watched it less than a week ago but i feel like i can't remember anything other than beating around the bush.

it's a very cute story but i think i'm too gruesome or something. i expected his sister to get kidnapped since they kept on showing her riding at night. i quickly learned that this is just a cute drama about a small town love. that being said, even though it's cute...it's kinda not that great. park min young was cute and great, that's what we expect from her, but the plot didn't offer much. it just didn't offer much. her family dynamic was so whatever that that's how i felt eventually

slice of life to the bone. give it a try if you like love. they seem to do that

i will say that they did a good job casting the mom and aunt. those actresses looked identical and i kept on getting them mixed up. so yay, they look related. i just think it's interesting how much everyone said they're beautiful when the mom looked kinda...average (maybe a lil botched)?

Each Chapter, a Bedtime Story

This show is slow paced. It moves so slowly that its pace is an integral part of what makes When the Weather Is Fine itself. It's very serene, and beautiful. Please don't come here, complain that nothing happens, and say it's boring. It's like looking for fresh salad in the canned goods section; you're looking for the wrong thing in the wrong place.

Now we've realigned your expectations, let's get into what makes When the Weather is Fine so charming.
I'm sure many have heard of the term slice-of-life, but as it's less of a common genre in dramas I'll brush over it. As the name implies, the genre explores the everyday lives our characters experience. These shows are often quiet, relaxing, and nostalgic. They treasure the mundane moments that make us smile, and focus more on developing characters than plots (although that isn't to say there never is one). This is what makes them so slow, because unlike other genres, which cut the fluff to move on to the next exciting thing, here, the fluff is the story. Now, before you think "well that sounds naff, I'm out of here" please don't think that you get nothing in exchange for the usual mix of tension and excitement. The time you spend getting to know characters intimately in their quiet and average moments, allows them to burrow deep into your heart before you realise it. There is a great sense of sincerity to be found in good slice-of-life. When the Weather is Fine is just that.
For those of you who watch other foreign media, this show may remind you of independent European films in its approach, the long silences that allow you to breathe. It's as cathartic as listening to waves on the shore, and just as relaxing. I fully invite you to fall asleep to this show after a long day. You'll have peaceful dreams, I'm sure.

However there is an intriguing story in here too, so if you do take up that offer, be sure to re-watch the parts you missed. Rather than a story, perhaps I should say a series of events, that unwinds and unravels the past to allow the characters to move on in the present, and gradually builds as the series progresses. (You've probably heard of that apparently disposable thing called character development, even if you don't see it as often as you might. Well, now you have a village's worth of it.) It gives the show a great sense of healing, and this is also where that catharsis really comes in.
Aside from the changes in the characters lives, spanning the course of the series, each episode is named after a short story, or poem, initially told to us by the good night book club. What makes this special, is how the characters receive these stories, use them to reflect on their own situation, and return them to us with a personal meaning. It makes you consider the different feelings they might bring to different people, but at the same time it's as though you are receiving a precious secret, a part of their heart, and then again like you are part of the book club, sharing snacks and jokes. It makes you care for the characters differently when things happen to them, because they feel like real people you've spent time with.

If you're looking for something to put you on the edge of your seat, this is not it. But if you're looking for something to wind down with, something to heal your soul or warm your heart, then this is quality content. Cosy up with your hot chocolate and blankets, and to all dear readers, I wish you a very, very good night.

Slow paced, beautiful, haunting

I only gave this a chance because I saw it was centred round a bookshop, and as a book lover, with a weakness for anything about books, libraries and bookshops. I saw so many reviews saying "slooooow" and "boring" that I wasn't expecting much.

Well yes, it is slow paced, very slow placed but for not a minute of the 16 episodes did I feel bored or not want to carry on watching. In fact, I now want to live in The Goodnight Bookshop, the coziest, quietest book shop I have ever seen, with just the soothing sound of Eun Seob pouring the coffee.

I really enjoyed the slice of countryside life, the beauty of the passing seasons and how the seasons are marked, both on the land and in people's lives. And the scenery and cinematography, just stunning, The backstories for all the important characters come to light very slowly but that's as it should be. It adds depth and richness to a story of simple, ordinary people. It is Eun Seob's character that ties the whole drama together, despite him not saying a great deal, his eyes say all that needs to be said.

If you are in the mood for edge of your seat, thrill a minute, laugh a minute, this isn't it, but if you are looking for something quiet, slow, real, life affirming, give this story of loss, betrayal, secrets, sadness, forgiveness and the happiness to be found in small things, a chance. I think this is a drama that will appeal to those of a particular taste, and I am definitely one of them.

TW: murder, suicide attempt, domestic violence

Many good qoute in this drama

My favourite quote is by Lee jang woo character
" People may call its mundane life . But working hard and living ordinary life is also happiness"

I'm just finished watching this drama.
What i like :
A good drama for winter season. I like the cinematography and the bookstore settings. I like the scene when all the bookstore club member get together, read book and share their opinion. The supporting character is interesting like hae won auntie, eun seop sister and lee jang woo.

What i disliked:
I like this kind of genre but maybe just for me, the flow is soo slow. It takes me a almost 1 month break before continue finishing this drama. Maybe i not too fond for the both main character that why i feel like that. But its still a okay drama and for me maybe i would never rewatch its again. It too slow paced for me.

this drama start so slow. okay let's say it's over all slow drama they force that "we are warm" "that place is warm and people who live in there are warm" in your face in the start with some poems here and there. but honestly that was the weak point in the drama.. but i some how end up enjoying it
if we look in the drama after that warm push, it start give us good story with nice characters. i was surprised that they have good back ground to the characters and why they are like this but they didn't push it on the start instead the push the warm feel that i don't buy..
Honestly i was ready to drop they drama in ep2 but i loved Eunsub character so cute and warm not the usual lead , if not for him i would have drop this for sure especially i'm not fan of the FL acting but then i'm glad i didn't because i love Eunsub back story and the story of the sisters (the FL mom and aunt ) that they tell so late on the show. another weak point to the writer if you have good story use it well.
ah if you going to watch this for Jae Wook don't!!! he appear for 2 min every ep i hate this the most they have a lot of time that he could use but they use it on stupid things.

acting was good for me this is kang joon best acting , as usual Park Min Young just act the same that's why i'm not fan for her.
Music was nice but the osts are forgettable.
over all i don't count it as bad drama
