Meitantei!

This show is funny. It is a complete parody or 'send up' of every whodunit caper; whether the origin be book, television or specific character. Everyone needs to "know their place" in the framework of a detective story and act accordingly. It's so weird! But funny!

Matsuda Shota plays "The Great Detective". Only he's a hilarious, spoiled, eccentric mess. He pouts and sulks when things don't go his way or when the Captain doesn't playcate him. Matsuda Shota is great. His knack for physical comedy and his rubberlike facial expressions cracked me up.

The blatent and kitchy way they spoke about the viewers, ratings and audience expectation was original to say the least. This show was entertaining but I'm not quite sure how to catagorize it. I came away laughing for the most part. It isn't a perfect show but if you are a fan of Shota, you'll like this because he's a natural scene stealer.

I'm doing something I probably shouldn't: paste my own review from one site into here. I just feel that this little, surprising drama deserves at least one praise.

I truly loved this show. It's a mixture of Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Ellery Queen and Philip Marlow, all made into a hilarious parody.

The great "Meitantei", brilliantly portrayed by Matsuda Shota, is a cocktail of silly arrogance, childish mistakes and misgivings, yet he's got brain and you can't help but like him a lot through all his naive traits.

The older policeman is a sort of "deus ex machina", who understands the needs of the dramatic process and explains it to his collegues and, in so doing, to the viewers.

Kashii Yu does a great job in picturing the only clear headed character in the story, who eventually learns to follow the rules, not those of the real investigation but the ones that create a detective story.

This show has to be viewed on different levels: the plot itself and the sub-plot, which is "how is a classic detective story created?".

I enjoyed the music too. Just like the situations portrayed, it mimics the pathos always found in thriller stories and makes it all the funnier.

Not to spoil but to encourage, let me add that the finale is brilliant; it will either leave you completely perplexed or you will laugh out loud and be left with a grin on your face, as I was.

This show is an amusing, brilliant parody of all things detective. It picks holes into the classic cliches and tropes of the mystery genre while creating witty dialogue with a very original outlook from the point of view of literary characters who have lives external to the books they are portrayed in. Each member has a role to fill, and even when they don't like how their role is going, they must attend to it properly or risk being written out.

This program destroys the fourth wall completely. There's a "backstage" room for the characters to meet in externally to the story, there's comments about ratings and audience approval, and their are unexplained or seemingly random changes which mimic the flaws of a poorly-conceived mystery which all mystery lovers love to hate.

I have to confess I wasn't wild about this show until I had seen several episodes. Its humor, while so obviously satiric, was not really what I had been expecting. After I lost all of my expectations for brilliant mystery, I found myself wrapped up in the comedy, satire, and witty "outside the box" thinking which went into it. The episodes were cute, the music fairly decent, and the cast had the energy and mannerisms necessary to making their roles work. It generally seems to be a show that people had a lot of fun making, and because of that, viewers can have a lot of fun watching.

If you aren't a fan of the mystery genre, a lot of this humor will fall flat. If you are, then the humor may irk you as being insulting to a genre you love. However, if you can just watch this show without trying to take it seriously, it becomes a real gem.

This is one of the goofiest shows I have ever seen. Seriously.
Basically the whole idea of characters that understand the "bigger picture", as it were, sounds really kind of strange going in...and it just keeps getting stranger.
There's a lot of humor in this show that wasn't laugh-out-loud funny to me, but it was funny in a kind of "oh, boy, that was a bad joke" way...and there are a few facepalm moments in there too.
I love the whole idea of the characters being able to step outside of the story and see what "has to happen for the story to move forward" and things like that. There are a lot of remarks made along those lines, particularly from the captain.
I also love the show's attitude when it comes to the fourth wall. Basically, from very early on it's like the writers said, "The fourth wall? Pshhh, what's that?"
Over all, really goofy and funny show. I'd recommend to anyone that likes mysteries but wants a bit of a parody or play-up of those kinds of scenarios. Oh, and be prepared for a VERY unusual ending.

This show is a visual representation of how a detective novel should go when you read them. It has all of the "typical" stereotypes for detective novels/shows, but has the "behind the scenes" look of a drama show. The entire show is hilarious, ingenious, unique, openly honest, and definitely one of a kind. If you want a typical, thrilling, and suspense-filled crime/detective drama then this may not be for you. But if you would like to watch something that has an interesting story/plot, then this show is absolutely for you! I feel like this show is a good place to start for people who are just starting to watch Japanese drama's, too.
