Super Bummed

I understand the direction they wanted to go with this season in attempt to keep the show fresh, but honestly it just felt really redundant and by now unoriginal. I didn't like the reboot aspect and really wish they kept the of original story going, or focus on new characters. The premise is pretty much the same as the first season so the charm that made the first season fun is lost. There were too many love triangles in this season which made everything feel messy and unorganized, especially in only 8 EP.

I got really tired of the Captain by the middle of season 1 so to see him rinsed and repeat for a whole movie and this reboot season was unbearable. For Haruta to all of a sudden end up with the Captain felt so random as the entire show did not set up their relationship. It didn't feel earned and because I dislike the Captain's creepy obsession so much it was an awkward end for Haruta. Speaking of him, I like his character but he's even more incapable this season which is disappointing. He, too, gets tiring. The side characters were fine but nothing extraordinary. I really liked Shino's side story with his son. I felt his dilemma about not being qualified to be a father due to his sexuality was interesting and potentially complex but sadly the show didn't do much with it and ended it abruptly. That honestly would've been a better story to go with.

And maybe it's cause I'm attached to the characters, but I missed Maki so much. If the team decides to continue this series I beg them to scrap this reboot idea and continue with Haruta and Maki cause they were what made the show so great. Unfortunately, season 2 was a big let down for me.

A must watch series 10/10

I do understand how everyone felt after reading the synopsis of this season 2, I was also in hesitation if I'm going to drop this or not but I give it a try, well to explain further, this is a stand alone story, so if you happen to love the season 1 (which is the series) and the movie ( the continuation of the series) you have to set aside your post drama syndrome first before watching this second season (In the sky) because this is a whole different thing.
So far, I really liked this one, the acting and expressions of Haruta is still one of of a kind. I also like the story it revolves around the airport and how the staffs handles their feelings towards each other. It's a 10\10 for me.

this series is good if you disconnect it from the original series

I want to preface this review with I went into this knowing the outcome of who Haruta ended up with and as an avid Haruta/Maki shipper and as someone who loved Maki’s character as a whole in the original series. I was wary going into this series given how much I loved HaruMaki but I thought I’ll put my personal bias aside and give this ago (especially since I love Tanaka Kei and wanted to watch more of his dramas and this was one I hadn’t yet managed to watch, and I loved Haruta Soichi a lot in the first season as well).

In some aspects I do think this series was written better than the first season. I won’t lie and tell you that this series is not just a lot of the original series’s plot points reworked and rewritten to fit other characters, because it is pretty much is a lot of that. But I feel In The Sky for the most part does better and/or improves those plot points that we see in the original series.

Something that In The Sky did better than the original series was the bonds between the workers, they felt like a family, something I felt didn’t exist as much within the first season. Kurosawa’s character as a whole I believe was written so much better within In The Sky, he’s less intolerable and stalkerish and I found this a nice improvement.

As much as I feel like this series does improve on certain aspects it does lack something that the original season has and I think it’s the bond between Haruta and the person he ends up with. As much as I didn’t despise the ending (which given by the comments I read I thought I would) it did still feel like it came out of nowhere. I have a lot more to say about this, which I have written down but it's very spoilery so I'll keep it out of this review.

This series is good if you disconnect it from the original series, it’s enjoyable, it has the same humour that the original series has but it felt like something was missing and that was Maki. I loved the new characters I really did but it would’ve been nice to see this AU with Maki in it because his presence was what was missing, him being there next to Haruta was what was missing. Even though Kurosawa was there it felt like no one really was on Haruta’s side. Overall though I still did really enjoy this series.

a let down

as someone who watched Ossan's Love the series and the movie Ossan’s Love: LOVE or DEAD, kinda guessed how this was gonna go (even without reading the description), as two of the lead character's r here, Haruta & Kurosawa... so of course we gonna go the route of the love triangle, hexagon(?) with Haruta being in the middle - and yeah there were funny bits (not hilarious, laugh-out-loud belly laughs. but this had its funny moments) but the over-all feel was depressing, sad and angering.

get load of the put-down regarding Haruta's character, was kinda meant to be the "butt of the joke" - but it just came off mean, not funny. and if u watch this (like i did, cause of the previous drama and movies - i.e cause of Haruta - as in - i like this character very much and am rooting for him) why the heck would i enjoy seeing him belittled and ridiculed like he the class moron, that everyone loves to picks on??? and if that wasn't enough Kurosawa comes off like a perverted boss whos abusing his authority, and forcing himself on a subordinate - a newbie at that, talk about abuse of power - there no sexual harassment laws in Japan?!?. and this is funny? when no matter how many times Haruta says NO, Kurosawa persists... but this is a comedy, so we gotta laugh???

wont say this was a dud from start to finish - i was totally into this - in spite of the "mean girls" routine a load of the character's adopted towards Haruta. he still held his own and shone, bumbling along in his own sweet way, showing his vulnerable, loveable side time and again and always being truthful towards the people confessing to him - even if he made mistakes he owned up and again really hard to not love a character like this - a bit far-fetched in reality. but that's the beauty of this medium -
even the bits that made me sad, cause of how he was treated, were bearable cause i hopped he would get his "happily ever after" - and a better one then Maki Ryota - thank you, NO Thank you very much - had enough of that annoying character in the drama and movie, so was elated that he wouldn't be around and maybe this time around Haruta would get someone worthy of him. and u could say he kinda did - but that end was a slap in the face of logic - there was No reason in hell for Haruta to fall in-love with an annoying, persistence, stalker that kept invading his space and forcing his confession on Haruta. who wouldn't take no for an answer - sorry

if anything, that end made it seem like Haruta was a fatherless child that was abandoned in his childhood and he was always searching for a father-figure and he found one in Kurosawa - and cause he had nothing else to offer to keep Kurosawa in the role of "father figure" by his side, he offered himself - this a love story? ok and considering Haruta was really infatuated with Naruse (another undeserving moron) who shot-down his confession without a second glance at the beating heart he crushed as he moved on to someone else.. where this sudden burst of love for Kurosawa come from - this end was surreal and if there is a season 2, i won't be astounded if we find out that Kurosawa was tripping hard - that end just killed my "high" for this drama - what is the lesson here, be a stalker and force ur wants on another and at the end u will be rewarded ugh plz

AWESOME!

This 2nd season is awesome. Saying that, I do want you to be ready and inform you that this second season is not a continuation of the original Ossal’s Love. Indeed, I was a little confuse since it look that they brought, basically, the same cast. But in fact, I would recommend you to think of this show as an alternative reality…lol.

So, explaining that, we move forward regarding this show. So, again, if you saw already the 1st season, then you already have a good ideal of the story line. Indeed, they recycle the story but not fully. I found myself enjoying Ossan’s Love: In The Sky more because I thought I knew what was going to happen, but in fact, they really made so much twist that at the end, the person that I thought they were going to date was in effect wrong.

The acting is intensified, and the comedy is on point. But to be honest, Tanaka (Haruta) and Yoshida (Kurosawa) acting was incredible. The way how they can connect to their emotions is so honest that it really made me emotional.
But the best part for me is that; they decided to develop more Yoshida’s character that it’s hard not to fall in love with him…hihihihihi.

I really enjoyed this show, and it was my treat to myself after a long day at work and the university. I really hope you enjoy this show as much that I did. It’s very innocent and loving.

My & Eskue's Review

Eskue: first off, i actually liked how this new Haruta was more direct on his feelings/speaking his mind. He didn't stutter and dwell as much on the multiple love interests conflict. But at the same time, the character itself wasn't as "likeable" as stated by Ijs prior. He kinda lost his essense. As for the show itself: it was really good and entertaining till episode 5ish. After that it was a whole mess and which had me rolling my eyes every 5secs. Naruse was such a bore and annoying at times, Shino at first was like stalker then he kinda gets more likeable. But man, wth was this ending with him ending up with Ossan?? It made no sense whatsoever. We didn't get any indicative of Haruta actually being in love with ossan or demonstrating any major feelings towards hir OR any sweet moments that would make our heart skip a beat for those two. I could write a lot more but i guess you guys would be bored at it XD. I didn't hate the show but it was definitely a let down since the first half was really nice

Me: What the hell? Where is Maki?

Masterfully done

This season has to be watched as a standalone. Forget about Maki from season one before you come into this. Once you've done that, you'll be able to enjoy this season for what it is.

This season has better characterization. Haruta is much more likable and not as selfish as he was in season one. He is more communicative and more aware of his feelings. Kurosawa is lovable and endearing in this season and the writers have done away with his stalkerish behavior from season one. Even the new characters like Naruse, Shinomiya and Hina are well written. All of them grow, overcome their fears and develop along with the story.

What I liked most about this story is that you'll not realize until the very last episode who Haruta will end up with. There is no single couple you'll be rooting for. All the characters are nicely crafted that you'll end up rooting for their happiness, irrespective of who they end up with.

overall good but

i wasn’t going to watch this as i wanted to keep the story from the first series and the movie as one, but i caved in when i saw Chiba Yudai the beloved <33
I think they did this really well for what it is, kind of repetitive but there is some new storyline features in there that i appreciated!! the ONLY thing i have to complain about is the ending..... mentally i ended it after Naruse and Haruta’s last scene together. I was satisfied nicely with that as the storyline ending and the parts after just ruined it completely. especially considering the ending of s1 ://// Anyways the last 5 minutes doesn’t make the rest of the series bad so i recommend to watch it if you miss them :3

Redundant, but still good for a laugh

The premise is very similar to the original Ossan's Love, and with the titular cast members returning it does feel unoriginal at times. However, there is fresh scenery and some new twists and turns to be found. It's still funny and ridiculous with over-the-top acting and editing at times, but less humorous than the original. Also, it takes much longer for any of the romances to actually get anywhere, which kept me guessing but felt a little frustrating at times because I didn't know who to root for! Overall, 6.5/10. Worth the watch if you really enjoyed the original like I did, but if you weren't super hyped about the original than I'd say you can skip this one.

It's Ossan's story after all....

like many others i watched the "first" season before starting this one. i wanted to give up after the first episode - lack of Maki., plus I dislike both the "main" female character/actor's child-like voice (what's with japanese idealizing childish features in women. eww)

i am glad i persevere. here's why.

1. we get to see more of Kurosawa. I always thought him underappreciated and deserving more screen time when I was watching the first season. I guess I tend to be easily impressed by theatrical actors (even without reading up on them, one can easily sport which j-actors have been/are active in theater or Takarazuka. There is something different in their gestures and intonation compared to actors who never do live shows).

2. after episode 4 or so, i began to appreciate an actor whom I have unfairly judged as poor man's Hayashi Kento. Chiba Yudai is a talented actor in his own right, though I still think that his range is more limited than Hayashi's (who can play both scummy and cute characters with ease. I think Chiba is stuck and in danger of being cast as cute twinks even well into his 40s)

a crack comedy

Overall: although this has some of the same characters and the overarching plot is similar, it's best to think of this as totally separate from Ossan's Love 2018 series. I laughed soooo hard at the ping pong and sumo scenes and appreciated the lack of the ex-wife character. There are several love triangles, rectangles? but it's really difficult to predict the ending. Watched on Viki.

Note with franchise:
Ossan's Love special 50 minutes long Japan 2016 (I haven't watched this but it's like a shorter movie)
Ossan's Love series Japan 2018 (expanded from the special), on Viki
Ossan's Love: Love or Dead movie 2019 (a continuation of the series and best to watch after the series)
Ossan's Love in the Sky series Japan 2019 (this is basically an alternate universe with differences in plot and characters), on Viki
Ossan's Love series Hong Kong 2021 (a retelling of Ossan's Love), on Viu in some countries

Content Warnings: manhandling, non con touching and kiss

What I Liked
- there were some real crack comedy moments
- also heartfelt moments
- I appreciated that characters communicated with each other (with some missteps lol)
- episode titles were cleverly integrated

Room For Improvement
- the intro and some of the editing was too frantic
- Haruta's character has a type of over acting, it's not really my thing but I have become used to it
- love triangles/rectangles are not something that I enjoy
- it did feel rushed especially towards the end, I think this was originally supposed to be a longer series

An Enjoyable Ride As Always

The natural tendency is to want to compare this to the first season of “Ossan’s Love” or the movie. I know the mind naturally gravitates towards the comparison. But once you get into this second season, within about 5 minutes, your mind will readjust itself and begin to process that you are watching something very distinct, very different, and very original. For those of you who have not seen season one, you do not need to watch that to appreciate this series. It is nothing like the first season, yet it does feel recognizable. Some faces are indeed familiar. Tanaka Kei reprises his role as the bumbling Haruta Soichi while Yoshida Kotaro also remains as Kurosawa Musashi. However, the setting is very different. Kurosawa Musashi is a Captain for the Kenku Peach Airlines and by sheer luck and a little bit of personal tenacity, Haruta becomes a CA (cabin assistant). Typical of Haruta, he is ‘late’ on his first day on the job. Yet his lateness is for a reason that envelops Haruta like an aura – his compassion. His overriding need, almost compulsion to help people above anything else. And his unwillingness to explain/defend himself as he knows it is futile. He is unequivocally late.
