It's short, full of emotions and fun to watch. I really loved the story. I love this old-school themed stories, so it was for me. It's based on 1979 time period and I love that time set in here. Plus the Deagu dialect is really nice to hear, something different from Seoul dialect we are used to.
It has 'Reply series' vibe to it - probably heard that from a lot of people - which is true (I started to watch the Reply series because of this drama).
This is a text book story of coming to age and first love and crushes. And it truly is about girl generation - but not that Girl Generation - we can see Jung Hee and Hee Joo who are in their teens, her mother, Auntie, number 3 all this woman, in different age group of that time fighting their own problems and facing them. And it is about girls in different generation coming together.
The boys are here, but they help to make the girls look more stronger, not the other way around. Though it doesn't stop being just about the characters either. It shows - glimpse of it at least - how the people used to live that time, things that shaped our culture into something that we see now. And you can see how much we have changed. And how much we haven't.
Plus you can ship anyone with anyone. You can try the drama, just to see if your's makes to the end or not. (Mine did!).
The actors are all new to me. But I liked Bona. She made Lee Jung Hee more relatable to me. Love Chae Seo Jin. Have a crush on Lee Jong Hyun. I don't know about others but I really liked Do Hee's performance as Shim Ae Sook. To see her character grow like that, it was really satisfying. I really liked that.
The OST's in it's self are nice. But it has some of the top 1970's song in it, both Korean and English. And it makes you feel that old time vibe. Love that.
Some of the moments in this drama are my favorite, so I'm going to re-watch those and probably the whole thing too. Cause why not? It's a nice drama. It's short but the story end's perfectly with it's self.
In the end it gives 'complete' feeling. And I can imagine the rest of the story in my mind. It's a really cool drama. Do watch it!! #HopingForAnotherSeason

Though the leads, male female both are quite young but they bring justice to the role that they portrayed in the drama. It's a short drama of only 8 episode but it will make you witness the roller coaster journey of love, infatuation, betrayal and true friendship. It will make you smile and cry at same time. It was worth watching and I hope the writers keeps making such amazing dramas. Even though it was a short of only 8 episodes, it doesn't wrap everything in a haste rather it focuses on life of every character involved in the drama and end them beautifully. Everything from the plot to the acting and the soundtrack was beautifully done and will give you the feels of 70s. Worth watching!

has some Reply vibes, though they didn't focus on the representation of
the past and it's trends, rather than the story of a high school girl
and her friend, the new girl at school. The romance was pretty good,
with the love triangle having a nice conclusion. In addition, the
performances were good and they added with the progress of the drama,
though the drama started a bit slow. Finally, the 8 episodes length was
just enough for the story. So, 7 out of 10.

first of all, the 80's theme. nothing could make me happier than 80's 70's theme and the music that comes along with it. the cinematography is really good.
secondly, the story, though it was simple and nothing complicated, it brought out so many meanings.. like gender biased, the korean society in 80's. the impact of cold war going in the whole world during that period. communist capitalist clash.
thirdly, the cast.. they were really really good, jung hee reminded us all of our high school crushes. loved her acting and her character as well. the supporting characters were also very real. from jung hee's mother to that aunty.
overall, such a good drama.. cried and laugh. i wish there were many other dramas like this. i thoroughly enjoyed watching this one.
ah, and lastly the music. I'm already an 80's music fan, and the background songs like the silence of the lamb was so good. i would highly recommend this drama

I enjoyed all the characters, and maybe only wish that Jung Her wasn't quite so prickly with Hye Joo (in the beginning) and Dong Moon. The weakest of the main characters, for me, was the actor playing Son Jin. He was a little flat for me, but otherwise, the cast was spot on.
The music was exceptional. There were several songs that were popular in the U.S. during that time period as well as some lovely Korean songs. The music really did a lot to add to the feel of the show.
I would rewatch this again without hesitation.

One thing I found interesting is that, each character was pretty aware about their individual attitude. None of them were obnoxious rather each of them knew about what they were doing right and when they are doing wrong. If they realized they were doing something wrong, they were immediately snapped out of it without being too selfish to satisfy their own greed. This fact is pretty likable about this drama.
The background score here is another exceptionally wonderful thing. All the phenomenal English pop songs of early 80s would produce a sensational nostalgia. Although I wasn’t born that time but I grew up listening to those songs on radio with my father. Brought back so many fond memories of my father and me dancing together. Moreover, the OSTs are also beautiful and soothing to listen to.
This drama has its own charm to revitalize ones mood. Fresh young actors playing their roles diligently adds another pleasure of watching. If critically judged, lots of flaws can be identified. However, sometimes no judgment is better. We can keep our life simple just by watching some simple, rejuvenating stuffs after a long day of boring work or in any lazy weekend evening, seeping through a cup of warm coffee.

What A Gem!
“Girls’ Generation 1979” tells a short and sweet high school story that completely took me by surprise. I adored the friendship and innocent romance, along with the nostalgic atmosphere. It was also very well directed and well written. The characters could’ve been delved into a bit more, but with the 8 episode length I think the show accomplished what it needed to. All the characters were interesting and distinct. The character arc of the lead was super enjoyable as well.
The story touches on so many great topics such as communism in South Korea, misogyny, and the normalization of abuse as discipline. I would definitely rewatch this show, and highly recommend it if you are in need of a pick me up drama!

This is a great drama and fun to binge-watch, but I feel like it's a bit underrated. Please give lots of support to it <3

The drama mainly focused on friendship, family, and love. I loved how this show touched on a lot of the issues of Korean culture back then. It wasn't just all fluff and lovey dovey, it definitely portrayed real life problems that people used to deal with and still might be dealing with in the modern times. I loved the friendship and family storyline in this. I especially loved it whenever the main leads, Jung Hee and Hae Joo stood up for themselves. The drama was not afraid to show that men thought of women very lowly back then and the leads would realize how wrongly they are being treated and would stand up against the people who oppress them. I'd have to say that it was quite empowering. I also enjoyed the romance. It was really cute! There was also some comedy in this so it's not all serious all the time. Definitely loved the old setting and the vintage outfits and pretty uniforms. There were a few questions that were not answered in the end and I would've loved to see the characters' lives later on, but overall, I was satisfied with the story and the ending.
ACTING/CAST
From what I've read from netizens, the casting was a bit controversial, particularly with casting Bona (Jung Hee) as main lead since she hadn't had much acting experience besides from having a small role in Hit the Top. I was a bit worried at first about how she would handle being the main lead but I personally think she delivered her character really well, although there is always room for improvement. Looking forward to seeing her in more dramas in the future! I think playing as a teenager really fits her. Also, it was great to see Kim Sun Young and Do Hee act in a drama set in the past once again (both acted in the Reply series). I had no issues with the casting. I thought everyone did pretty well!
MUSIC
I am a 90s kid and growing up, my family listened to songs from the 70s-80s, especially the Carpenters, whose songs were almost in every episode of this drama. I loved the English songs they featured in this drama and I would get excited whenever they played something that I recognized! It is also always interesting and delightful to hear the old Korean songs that were famous back then. The show's OST was great too!
Overall, this drama was great and enjoyable! It may not be the best drama out there but it is definitely worth watching it. It's only 8 episodes but you'll be craving for more! I recommend this drama to everyone, especially to Reply series fans. You won't be disappointed!

The story was basically about one-sided love, creating a relationship "circle". What I mean is, girl A likes guy Z but he has a crush on girl B, girl B has a crush on another guy Y, and guy Y likes A. Ugly things like parents' intervention or tricking someone don't happen, but it's all about one hooked to another.
If you have nothing to do in a day, you can spend 8 hours watching this drama and will make your day. YOU'LL LOVE IT.

Several reviewers have complained that it was too short, I could not disagree more strongly. Far too many K Dramas are far too long, even at 16 episodes, this one was a great example that "less is more" I really wish more K Dramas would be made in shorter formats. Eight episodes means no pointless filler, no draggy go-nowhere side stories. AND, being short makes it very rewatchable.
