A Refreshing Gem: "Welcome to Samdalri" is a Comforting K-Drama

I'm compelled to share my thoughts on this delightful drama, which has left a lasting impression on me. "Welcome to Samdalri" is a true gem that has captured my heart with its gentle, refreshing story and lovable characters.

As someone who tends to avoid heavy dramas and frustrating villains, I was thrilled to find that this show exceeded my expectations in every way. The female lead shines brightest, with a growth arc that's both inspiring and relatable. I was particularly impressed by the way the community rallied around her, offering support and encouragement on her journey.

The small town setting is also noteworthy, with its picturesque scenery and warm atmosphere that feels like a cozy hug. It's no wonder that this drama has become a comfort watch for many fans.

What struck me most, however, was the drama's ability to soothe my frazzled nerves after watching another intense K-drama, "Queen of Tears". This show was the perfect antidote to the stress and angst I had accumulated, and I found myself fully immersed in its gentle charm.

Sweet & Heartwarming

Simple, sweet story of friendship, love, motherhood & second chances.

Cho Yong Pil is a weather forecaster. He is crazy, short-tempered, knucklehead, and loves his city.

Cho Sam Dal is a successful photographer. She is badass, smart, brave, crazy, temperamental, but hates her hometown. She shows herself strong, but she also needs someone to lean on.

Cho Yong Pil & Sam Dal were best friends from childhood, but for some reason, they brokeup. I loved their first meeting, it was hilarious. They were fighting over pants lace.

The way Cho Yong Pil thought Cho Sam Dal as a thief & his friends coming to catch the thief.

I laughed my ass off when Cho Yong Pil came to save Cho Sam Dal, but he fell into the water. After being saved by Cho Sam Dal, he was so embarrassed that he wouldn’t look at her & in the end, she did the same thing which he did in their first meeting.

Whenever Cho Sam Dal is drunk she would fall down & the boys would hurry to hold them.

The happy dance Cho Yong Pil gave when he got to know that Sam also liked him

Loved how positive Cho Yong Pil was about Boo Sang Do having feelings for Sam Dal.

Sweet thing Cho Yong Pil does, like tying Sam Dal shoelace in any kind of situation.

Loved the haenyeo fight between the two towns.

Bang Eun Joo deserves all of it. What Sam Dal mother did was right. Cho Sam Dal should've sued her if I were in her place, I would've sued her for lying. Because of these kinds of false accusations, many celebrities' careers are over.

Loved how everyone in Samdal ri helped Sam Dal with her exhibition

Laughed so hard Cho Sam Dal parents seeing her & Chong sleeping together.

Loved Cho Hae Dal & Cha Ha Yoo relationship. Cha Ha Yoo is more maturer than her age. Always worried about her mother.

Lovely, healing and heartwrenching

Lovely: the village folk, to see JCW reunited with his surrogate mom from Healer, the beautiful chemistry between the leads and their families.
Healing: the scenery, the ocean, how to deal with your first love when he/she is suddenly very much back in your life?
Heartwrenching: JCW looking at SHS and vice versa. So excited for romance to come (Back). Her backstory in Seoul. The sister with the kid - interested in her story!

I love it so far. Relatable emotions and great acting. I like both leads very much and the have great chemistry. Can’t wait for more.

wonderful

This drama was so highly anticipated and thankfully it delivered. Shin hae sun and her team more than delivered. She was in her all encompassing roles of acting versatility and range. The storyline may appear simple and down to earth but the delivery from all the actors made it so intriguing and so captivating. So pleased that year 2023 should close with a drama worth watching. Recently there are too many new releases that unfortunately showcase the actors visuals but failed to convince on their acting skills. Kudos to all members of wts team for such a great drama with genuinely brilliant acting prowess.

Just a small story - one time watch

I would like to start with saying female lead was not perfect for this role. They should have casted someone else for this role(This is just my personal opinion). Writers try to include most aspect of one persons life in this drama which was nice. They tried to show us friendship and love. There was some unwanted storyline in this series which was dragging.
Jo Yoon Seo did a exceptional job. The way she acted as Bang Eun Joo, she was not acting, she was actually living the role. When she appeared on screen we will feel like going and kicking her.

Scenic beauty of the place that have shown in this dram is damn good.

A Small Town Romance With Quirky Characters

JTBC’s latest offering “Welcome to Samdalri” is a decades long saga of friendship, lost love and reconciliation. Starring Ji Chang Wook and Shin Hye Sun in the lead roles of Cho Yong Pil & Cho Sam Dal/Cho Eun Hye, the show transverses their journey as they reconnect after eight years of separation. The first thing that I noticed about this show is the scenic beauty. Shot in the backdrop of the beautiful Jeju island, the show banks on the small town life and its busy yet nosy neighborhood. Set in Samdalri (which is native to both Cho Yong Pil & Cho Sam Dal), the drama focuses on their reconciliation as Sam-dal returns to her hometown when her career plummets and she is at her wit’s end. The pilot episodes were pretty decent at introducing the individual characters and their current lives while keeping their past shredded in mystery. There is a lot going on in the backdrop that we are unaware of and these invisible issues have been adversely affecting their relationship for almost a decade. Let’s sit down and dissect the finer details relative to this small town romance!

The best

It's one of the best And the drama. It's all you need to sit down and watch it now for the holidays wonderful romantic healing. A JCW amazing in his role great as always and never lets me down. All the actors are amazing and have chemistry.

The FL character is so problematic

Seriously the way the FL character is portrayed 6 episodes in is so problematic. I dont know if I should continue watching this until the end or just drop this right now. It is hard to accept that someone who worked her ass off to make a name for herself will just sit down and play the victim when she had every opportunity and resources to fight back. If its the mental health card that the scriptwriter is playing, it kinda feels unrealistic for me. Thankfully I find the characters around the FL entertaining - the male friend who owns the store, the niece, the gossiping ajummas.

Romantic series "2nd chance" and "return to the countryside", with Ji Chang Wok & Shin Hye Sun.

PLOT: FL, a renowned photographer, returns home to Jeju with her sisters, to escape a scandal. There she finds the ML, her childhood friend - ex lover, who will help her face the situation.

PROS:
+ 2 great leads for the CL: Ji Chang Wok & Shin Hye Sun.
+ endearing characters, fairly well described (but a little one-dimensional).
+ a magnificent setting which highlights the island, its culture, its values.
+ “relatively” realistic story.
+ Dynamic production, but the plot is simple and the rhythm is slow at times.
+ This series aims to be feel-good, with a light and “comedy” tone.

CONS:
- the characters lack depth.
- the narration is sometimes slow, which does not make the series addictive.
- Some narrative arcs are not credible: I am willing to believe that the media have a significant influence in some industries, but the fact that journalists are unleashed on a popular photographer based on a simple denunciation? The fact that they arrive in force for a small exhibition in the lobby of a remote weather station?? Seriously ?? The FL could solve everything by simply telling the truth about her ex's betrayal with her assistant. Why did she never say anything?

=> The series is nice, light, and it's an opportunity to see JCW, but it won't go down in history...

PLOT: la FL, photographe renommée, rentre chez elle à Jeju avec ses sœurs, pour fuir un scandale. Elle y retrouve le ML, son alter ego (ami d'enfance - ex lover) qui va l'aider à affronter la situation.

PROS:
+ 2 super leads pour le CL : Ji Chang Wok & Shin Hye Sun.
+ des personnages attachants, assez bien décrits (mais un peu unidimensionnels).
+ un cadre magnifique qui met en valeur l'ile, sa culture, ses valeurs.
+ story "relativement" réaliste.
+ Réalisation dynamique, mais l'intrigue est simple et le rythme connait des longueurs par moments.
+ Cette série se veut feel-good, avec un ton léger et "comédie".

CONS:
- les personnages manquent de profondeur.
- la narration est parfois lente, ce qui ne rend pas la série addictive.
- certains arcs narratifs ne sont pas crédibles : je veux bien que les médias aient un poids important dans certaines industries, mais que les journalistes se déchainent sur un photographe en vogue sur une simple dénonciation ? qu'ils débarquent en force pour une petite expo dans le hall d'une station météo reculée ?? La FL pouvait tout résoudre en disant simplement la vérité à propos de la trahison de son ex avec son assistante. Pourquoi n'a-t-elle jamais rien dit ?

=> La série est sympa, permet de voir JCW, mais elle ne restera pas dans les annales...
