Did not quite stick the ending, but still a very enjoyable watch.

Subjective Gut Rating: 8.25 (almost a solid 8.5)

Just as many have commented and reviewed, “A Journey to Love” was an exciting, fun, and engaging drama for most of the episodes. Unfortunately, along with other fellow viewers, I was disappointed in the last 5-6 episodes. Even so, this is still a drama worth watching.

—-----------------------------------------------
What I Like:

Fight/Action Scenes - It has been a while since I last watched a drama with very satisfying fight scenes that don’t rely on CGI. There are still some posing and slow motion, but comparatively, the fight scenes are fast-paced, realistic and choreographed well. There are many war scenes, as well as just regular fighting amongst each other. These scenes are also spread throughout the drama. All actors and actresses look the part and I don’t see anyone weak who acts like they are flailing around with their swords.

The Gang of Brothers - Who would have thought I will love these side characters more than the main leads. The buddies from the Six Realms Hall/Liu Dao Hall are such a fun bunch. They provide many comedic moments. Initially, I wasn’t sure if the comedy jives with the vibe of the drama, since “A Journey to Love” appears to be a serious drama of assassination, palace politics and wars. But I love these guys so much. Each of them brings something different to the group. And when the last few episodes happened, I was so sad.

Alen Fang/Yu Shi San (13) - I bet 13 is the most loved character in the drama. I’ve seen Alen Fang in many other dramas before, mostly as a supporting role. The last drama I saw him in was “The Longest Promise” and he played the beloved Zhi Yuan. Zhi Yuan is such a different character from 13 but Alen did such a great job. It’s lovely to see more and more viewers know and acknowledge Alen’s acting. He shines so brightly that Liu Yu Ning, as the main lead, pales in comparison.

Princess Yang Ying - This is my first time watching He Lan Dou and she has quite a difficult character to play in Yang Ying. I found He Lan Dou’s acting a little rough in the beginning and it took me a while to get used to her cross-dressing role. But she grew on me and I like her acting and her character more and more. It’s lovely to see little Yang Ying grow in front of our eyes. From the forgotten and timid princess to an independent, strong-willed and feisty lady of the house.

Ren Xin - A true assassin and the best of the best. She doesn’t stop killing, from ep 1 to ep 40. Finally we have a strong female character who is strong from the beginning to the end. Her romance softens her hardened heart a little, but deep down she’s still the trained assasin. I enjoyed Liu Shi Shi’s portrayal of Ren Xin. LSS exudes elegant yet arrogant charisma. Her posture and head were so straight that I wondered if LSS needed a massage after every scene. LOL

—---------------------------------------------

What I have Mixed Feelings or Don’t Like:

Li Tong Guang - I like him and then I don’t like him. His obsession towards Ren Xin is a little dramatic, but it’s not like I’ve never seen this before. This is my first true time watching Chang Hua Sen and I don’t think his acting is quite up to par to play such a polarizing character. He wasn’t bad, but at times he seems to have tried too hard to act crazy, and his acting lacks maturity. Other times, I feel that he did quite a good job as someone intelligent and ambitious, yet still cares about the lives of the common people. Maybe if this Li Tong Guang is played by another actor, I might have liked him more as the default gray character of a drama.

Romance - I love all things romance, yet I am not loving the romance between Ren Xin (FL) and Ning Yuan Zhou (ML). It’s not horrible. They look good together, and Liu Shi Shi has the perfect height to stand next to the super tall Liu Yu Ning. But I am not feeling their chemistry. I think Liu Yu Ning’s acting is adequate but not amazing, and especially not good during romantic scenes. There are also way too many slow motion romantic scenes and there was one kiss that took forever for the lips to touch. On the other hand, I love the few scenes Yu Shi San has with Chu Yue. Their scenes are so limited but I feel the chemistry between them so much more. Their night of fun together brought a lot of joy. The conversation/confrontation the day after was emotional and really tugs at my heartstrings. And the last scenes of them together make me feel so, so sad.

Pacing - I was really enjoying the different arcs in the first 70% of the drama. I thought it was well-paced and I was invested and engaged. The combination of comedy, action, camaraderie, and palace politics are pretty well done. Then the last arc with the northerners happened. It’s like someone presses on the gas pedal and everything speeds up. Why was there such a rush in the end? Was the drama edited and chopped up because of the 40-episode limitation? Was that the writing’s fault? I am not sure.

Ending - Was I surprised how ‘brutal’ the ending is? Not really. I don’t dislike the ending per se. I am a little surprised by the sheer number of deaths. I’ve watched C-drama historicals enough to know not to love a character too much, as they might not make it to the end. I just wish their deaths would be spaced out. I don’t think I have the time to mourn for each death, and the drama did not take a breather before moving to the next one. This ties back to my criticism of the pacing.

Dubbing - How I wish everyone used their real voice. Unfortunately, Liu Shi Shi/Ren Xin and Chang Hua Sen/Li Tong Guang. The other main cast did and I applaud them for it, especially for Liu Yu Ning/Ning Yuan Zhou and the young He Lan Dou/Yang Ying. But all dubbing was done in the studio and none live.

—---------------------------------------------

Although this drama is not perfect, I have quite an enjoyable time watching it. It’s able to hold my attention until about ep 35. If the last 5-6 episodes are paced well and the main romance has better chemistry, I would have rated this an 9.0. But now, I am just going to give this an 8.25-8.50. I will still recommend this drama for the fun bunch of guys, great action scenes and an engaging plot.

Overall a worth watching character-driven and action-packed drama.

If you're looking for a drama that shows significant characters development, that can make you feel fully engaged with them and focus on their journey, then this drama is for you.

Everything that i enjoyed a lot in this drama:

1. Equally strong and smart leads

FL (Ren Ruyi) is THE lethal yet graceful assassin you'll ever see in Cdrama land. This is her story in finding a new purpose in life, to be more humane than just being a "killing machine," from a lone wolf to finally finding the wolf pack that can fight together with her.
ML (Ning Yuanzhou) is a former assassin and leader of the country's intel organization. The greenest of green flags ML ever. He's heroic, charismatic, affectionate to those he loves, not an annoyingly cold character but still ruthless and unrestrained to enemies.
Ability-wise, we can say they're the the birds of a feather that flock together.

2. Very mature and healthy relationship between the leads

The love line is a delight bcs they integrate modern approach in the dialogues about relationship and how men and women should treat each other. Their attraction toward each other started with seduction and temptation, but smtms all you need in a relationship is proper communication, warm/ tight hugs and little kisses. Props to Liu Shishi and Liu Yuning for delivering the emotional scenes in a very believable way and their off-the-chart chemistry, making them the type of couple that you'd want to root for along the way. I'm also glad that their relationship didn't turn them into a total love brain, they still stick to mission and priority till the last moment!

3. COMEDY

The comedy is gold, unexpected but on point!!! you can just watch for the comedy bcs its so worth it!!

4. Intense fight scenes

This drama gives everything that you want to see in a normal wuxia drama: Heroes with great martial arts, sword-fights, fist-fights, bows, spears, machineries, war scenes, solo and group fights. The fight choreographies are top-notch!

5. A group of likeable characters with their heartening/ inspirational relationship

We get so many likeable characters, be it bcs of their personality, character development or backstory. My fav female characters: Ren Ruyi, Yang Ying, Mei Niang, Empress of Wu, and Chu Yue. They're strong women in their own way. Fav male characters: Ning Yuanzhou, Yu Shisan, Yuan Lu, Sun Lang, Qian Zhou. They can do bloody fights, but can also make you giggle bcs of their cute friendship and humour antics! Special mention to Deng Hui and PM of Wu, they are also full of the complexity and arc of human nature. It's very rare for me to find a Cdrama where many female and male characters are equally likeable. Last drama i watched with characters like this was Nirvana In Fire.

6. High quality OSTs
The OSTs are just incredible, provided with high quality by both legendary veterans and rising young singers in Cdrama OST circle.

The minus:

1. Smtms there are poor cuts/ editing in some scenes, though it didn't bother me that much lol

2. I can accept how our beloved characters end that way, as long as its proved to contribute a lot for the greater good. I also found that the ending relates so much to the Chinese title and some of the OSTs' lyric. But i still wish the scriptwriter/ director concluded the ending in a better way. I wonder if the real ending couldn't pass the broadcast review, bcs this drama does touch sensitive topics. The story even started with both leads barely got loyalty to the crown and almost forsaking it..

Despite the 'uncommon' ending, there are still many factors that make this drama deserve the love and praise from audiences. I am also thankful to this ensemble of actors who dedicatedly brought their characters to life, we wouldn't be so invested to the story without their impressive acting!

It was marvelous journey of love, friendship and life...

It felt like i lived with them. From start to finish, there was no boring moment or even a second, also i didn't skip or fast-forward even one scene!! I love everything about this drama!! Character.. god everyone is so good! I loved every interaction between the boys, them teasing NYZ, YSS flirting with ruyi, QZ pulling NYZ 's leg all the time, everyone taking care of Yuan Lu, I hated it since the starting how Sun Lang didn't have enough screentime!!! If we talk about chemistry, NYZ & YSS chemistry>>>> NYZ & Ruyi chemistry!!! I am convinced, YSS is NYZ 's first wife! The bromance between Ning & Shisan threw me off the loop. I never expected to see such a wholesome, beautiful display of friendship, comradeship, and brotherhood.! Even with one scene Yuan lu stole the show (that rooftop scene, which in my phone wallpaper rn??). And THE FIGHTS!!! Were majestic!!! It's so beautiful!!! The cinematography!!! French kiss! I hated LTG but felt bad for him at the same time! Yang Ying, i forgot she's princess, she lived as prince!!! Chu yue, wished she and YSS had more screentime!! QZ deserves more recognition! He's loyal and funny, that's rare!!!

The drama went from Political comedy to political tragedy.. still it's fine! I loved it so much!! It was a marvelous journey!!! Of LIFE and DEATH!! Of laughter and tears!

It's my first ever review in mdl, even for my most obsessed dramas i didn't write a review but this drama is something special! I started with no exception. I know no cast here ( I know singer LYN but idk he's an actor) I don't rate 10 unless there's atleast one favourite actor of mine acted in that drama. I had no idea who is who which made me enjoy this even more.. I'm gonna petition for LYN & AF bromance/bl/action drama.

Best Chinese Drama of 2023... with the side of an obsessive stalker

Really good show - one of the best Chinese dramas I've seen in a while (easily the best of the year), with some glaring flaws.

Now going into the show, it's important to look at it from the lens of an "idol" drama - it's purpose is to entertain viewers, not realistically portray humanity. That's why some things like the main leads' overpowered-ness (and yes, they are the two strongest characters from beginning to end, no one else comes close) is excusable. And even given that, they're semi-realistic with it - the main leads are constantly suffering from injuries and they struggle with defeating enemies in large numbers.

First, great characterization for the characters - leading and supporting alike, probably the best I've seen for a wuxia drama (outside of the masterpieces in Nirvana in Fire and Joy of Life).

The main leads have a strong relationship - they have good chemistry, it matches the plot, and by the end, you can see how much they care for each other in both their actions and their acting. They get together relatively early on in the show, and they have a strong loving relationship for most of it. The most refreshing thing about it is that the problems that they face in their relationship are very realistic - there aren't any stupid misunderstandings that drag on for episodes on end, and there are no outsiders that try to influence their relationship in any significant way (just a gang of shippers, but they're harmless).

Most importantly, the main leads have a mature relationship. Without spoiling too much, they broke up with each other in the middle of the show because they realized they both wanted different things out of a relationship. They're smart characters that clearly care for each other, but they also realize that they need to prioritize their own needs without sacrificing everything for their partner.

Outside of the main leads, Princess Yang Ying has the strongest characterization out of any supporting character I've seen in recent memory. She has a classic hero's journey arc - from weak princess to the strong ruler of a nation that takes responsibility for her citizens. She learns from Ren Ru Yi the importance of her status as royalty, and you can see how it transforms her actions and decisions throughout the show. From scene to scene, you can witness her growth and it's a feel-good moment at the end when you reflect on what she has become.

In complete contrast to that is one of the major flaws of the show - Li Tong Guang's character. His character is so odd and uncomfortable at times, given his obsession/sexualization of Ren Ru Yi. It feels like the show just brushes that aside when the two main leads decide to work with him - like, this man has been creepily obsessive over your lover for years, are you sure you want to treat like this? Throughout the drama, there are hints of his redemption, but they get squashed over and over again by his actions. To compare, the writer wrote Princess Yang Ying's character arc as a straight line from weak to strong, and Li Tong Guang's character arc as a fucking scribble.

Outside of these four characters, the supporting cast is well developed. Each of the Liu Dao Hall members have a clear narrative arc that is neatly wrapped up by the end of the show (especially Liu Shi San - did not expect him at all). Even minor characters like Chu Yue, Deng Hui, and Chief Secretary Du show character growth, and become likable to viewers. One thing I was particularly impressed about was how the writer managed to tie in the Wu Empress and Danyang Prince's narrative arc with such little screentime (episode 1 + an episode near the end).

The only criticism I have of the supporting characters is the Wu Emperor - who somehow magically transforms from a selfish to magnanimous king... but that leads into another issue: Pacing. Particularly in the last couple (5-6ish episodes).

The entire drama breaks down in the last few episodes - at such a rapid pace. Things are happening left and right. Something that would have taken a couple episodes to unfold is shown in mere minutes, and it leaves viewers confused. The plot twist when the main leads return to the Wu Empire could have been a glorious moment - but the entire conspiracy unfolds so fast, there isn't time for the viewer to completely process and marvel at everything.

And... MAJOR SPOILER: All the characters start dying off one by one that there isn't enough time to mourn their death either. It's strange when all of the characters survive until episode 35 or so, but so suddenly die off.

When it comes to the technical side of the drama, there's very little to complain about. Amazing sound - from the voice overs, sound effects, and (especially) the music. Beautiful costumes + production design, all of the characters looked beautiful. And the camera work on the fight scenes are a marvel - especially when the two leads are fighting side by side.

With that, it's a great show - the writer did a good enough job in the first 30 or so episodes of the drama, that I'm attached to the characters enough to follow through with the trainwreck of the end, since I wanted to see what happens to them.

(P.S. Hearing about the Liu Yu Ning drama breaks my heart. I think he's incredibly attractive in the show - and I'm not usually a fan of male characters in historical dramas. I usually find male actors unattractive because of the feminine look + heavy makeup, but he looked manly and natural in the show. That fucking mole is hot.)

I found a masterpiece

I've just finished it, and I'll just describe in one word this whole wonderful journey. Unforgettable. From the first episode to the last, I was breathless. This series is a masterpiece.

Worth giving it a chance!!!

Although the ending confused me a bit, I loved it. It may be a sad ending, but I won't say I was disappointed. Yes, I experienced quite a few emotions during the last episode, and yet I wouldn't have imagined any other ending for all of them.

Congratulations to all the Journey to love team!!

All the actors gave their best and it has shown in the result.

I just expect Liu Yuning to work with Liu Shishi again because they have incredible chemistry on the show and I would love to see them together again.

over-rated drama

Just finished all 40 episodes of this drama and must say that I am surprised to see all of the 10/10 and 9/10 ratings it has received.

The drama started off strongly, I really liked the first 15-20 episodes or so. The plot moved along well with a great story line, liked the actors, also some good comedic scenes helped make the first 1/2 of this drama a decent watch.

Then somewhere around episode 25 this drama goes off the rails and just gets worse and worse until the awful ending. The last 15 episodes or so were terrible. Every episode seemed to have a 4-5 minute scene with the male/female leads being all lovey-dovey, sweet-talking each other with the obligatory love song playing in the back-ground. This got tiresome and repetitive. Every character seemed to experience a near death scene and then the other characters help them miraculously pull through. This got tiresome and repetitive. Each episode seemed to have 3 or 4 song interludes, starting to think the producers were either getting royalties or really trying to push the soundtrack. This got tiresome and repetitive. Each time a character died, there would be 7-8 minute montage of flashback scenes with that character, of course, with some song playing in the background. This got repetitive and tiresome as well. In addition, the drama had the worst ending of any C-drama that I have personally watched. It was like the script writers gave up and just wrote some nonsense to get this drama over with.

Gave this drama an overall rating of 2.0 solely based on the 1/2 half of the drama. Re-watch value should be 0 but apparently 1.0 is the minimum value I can assign. It was painful watching this drama once, can't imagine that anyone would go back and re-watch this a second time. This drama won't be showing up on any top 10 best drama lists, but wouldn't be surprised at all to see this drama on a number of top 10 worst drama lists though. Starting to think that the producers must have paid an army of people to give glowing reviews.

highly recommended for those who like strong female lead + team work + action.

highly recommended for those who like strong female lead + team work + action.

Personal Opinion : An interesting story series full of action comedy. Costumes, sets, and camera work were all very good. Everyone's acting was good, especially Liu Shishi's acting, expression is great! In short, Just looking like a wow?.

I think the speed has been bumped up a bit to reduce the runtime, which I noticed at first. But after the 3rd episode, I got so immersed in the story that I didn't think about it anymore. Overall its an enjoyable series, I was never bored for a single minute.

rushed ending but overall good drama

This is my first review..

From episode 1, we can see powerful ML and FL and a bunch of other characters who are friends of the ML. I liked the way they wrote the ML and FL characters; the audience can understand their love and respect for each other without too much speech. Initially, this was okay. After that, it felt repetitive. I was like, "Stop with these dialogs. I want the plot to move forward." However, these episodes didn't seem like fillers, for that I have to praise the screenwriter; otherwise, I would have dropped this drama long ago.

Now, coming to this shipper squad, what's with all this eavesdropping? I couldn't help but wonder if anyone would feel comfortable with someone listening to their private conversations. Here, the screenwriter made it look like comedy.

One of the best character developments is YY. I like her very much. Still, I have another question mark: when did YL and YY fall in love? All the episodes we have seen, they were acting like siblings. I can understand from YL's perspective; maybe he had secret admiration or a crush on her but did not dare to say. Coming to YY, she loved another guy from the start, and knowing he betrayed her, she was left heartbroken. But when did she fall in love with YL to the extent that she can't forget him her whole lifetime? Just a few minutes of talk on the rooftop – no, their conversation felt childish. Here, the plot is lacking. The same goes for Yu Shi San and Chu Yu. I hoped their love story was given more screen time.

And what's with LTG? This is the only character I hated, loved, felt sad about, and had mixed emotions. In fact, I really cared about him. His character is creepy from the start, and I really hoped his character would have proper development by the end. I just want him to get over his obsession with his shifu. This guy won't even realize that what he has for her is respect and admiration, but not romantic love. We viewers can't see romantic love in his face. And the romantic love aspect was missing between YY and YL as well. The unresolved aspects of LTG's character, coupled with the rushed explanations, left me extremely disappointed. What's with that impulsive nature at the end?

And the wedding arc... Stop, man. I am tired of NYZ teaching LTG.

coming to the deaths of the remaining squad members . Why they wanted to kill each and every character??.

I hold the belief that a loveless marriage requires time to develop genuine love. I hope that eventually, LTG and YY can develop feelings for each other and build a happy family. Life should not come to a standstill because of one person; we must continue to move forward.

The ending, it makes sense that Chu Yu died after 10 years and reunites with other people.

My only problem is they rushed these last 6 episodes. The plot is moving very fast, difficult to catch up.

Overall, it is an enjoyable ride.
My score: 6/10.
Sorry, it has a lot of flaws. What I appreciate is it has good fighting scenes, and I literally enjoyed Strong FL here.

Best chinese drama of 2023. Favorite Female Lead of any drama.

This was a beautiful drama, everything from the makeup and costumes to the fight scenes was done exceptionally well. Acting was on point the entire time, it wasn't overly funny and cutesy like china likes to do, and it wasn't boringly serious either, they hit just the right note.

Ren Ruyi and Ning Yuanzhou are perfect main characters, they both stand briliantly by themselves, and form a perfect couple together. The Female Lead, unlike what is popular, is not dependant on the ML, and doesn't cry every 5 mins. She's strong, dependable, smart, and acts like a mature grown woman instead of a child. The ML is the best at what he does, but instead of being cruel like most other drama leads in his position, he is kind and affectionate towards his brothers. When they are together they form a beautiful sight.
The Princess is the one who really rises up throughout the show, it is so rare to see a princess show such growth, it was an amazing progression throughout the season. I would love to see more of her in a 2nd season.

The soundtrack was great, the combat music for the female lead is so hype it always gets me giddy with excitement.
I've already begun rewatching the show.
The only flaw to point out is the rush in the last 6 episodes, with the amount of content they rushed through, they could've done an entire 2nd season for the show instead.

Definitely watch this, you will not regret it.

It's about the journey, not the destination

This is a great drama but definitely not without its flaws. The drama revolves around two competing assassins and their teams of members, each with diverse backgrounds and skills, embarking on a life threatening journey. Several themes of love are shown in the drama: romantic love, obsessive love, bromance/comrade’s love, self-love and friendship love. Note, pretty much the whole drama is about the journey to save the Emperor.

The male lead is a notorious assassin and is tasked with saving the Emperor who is held hostage at the enemy’s state. His four close comrades tag along for the journey. The female lead is one of the best assassins from the enemy’s state and on her personal path of revenge that collides with the male lead’s mission. We also have a Princess who disguises as a Prince and a disciple who is obsessively in love with his master (the female lead).

The drama has an engaging start, very boring and draggy middle (ep 18-28 virtually nothing exciting happens) and a spectacular ending that was brilliantly executed. The last 10 episodes absolutely kept me at the edge of my seat.

Objectivately, the drama ticks all the boxes. It has the right balance of action, politics, comedy and romance, with strong-willed main leads. The characters are intelligent and the plot makes sense. However I always felt something was missing but I can’t quite put my finger on what.

POSITIVE:
- Female lead is the best female assassin and seductress that I’ve ever watched. Smart, cunning and beautiful.
- A true assassin’s drama. People die. I mean, lots of people die. Like lots…. trust me on that one.
- Strong male and female lead. They are both intelligent and badass.
- Healthy relationships and healthy romance between the leads portrayed.
- Many awesome bromance scenes.
- Fantastic fight scenes (some are even 10 minutes long and are visually stunning).
- Acting and visuals are top-notch.
- High budget drama (and it shows).
- Last 10 episodes kept me at the edge of my seat.
- Spectacular ending - one of the best executed endings I’ve ever seen.
- Alen Fang is brilliant. I started watching the drama for him and his performance delivered. He brought the best comedy vibes.
- Many umbrella walks that are visually feast for the eyes.

NEGATIVE:
- I absolutely hated the LTG character that had an obsessive, unrequited love plotline. His plotline was so unnecessary and embarrassing to watch. It took way, way, way too much screen time (literally around 10 episodes, repeating the same thing. Him crying like a little boy and obsessively trying to get with the female lead who repeatedly rejects him). The only way I managed to watch his scenes is because the actor is a total eye candy and his acting is top-notch. But I’m seriously so done with these plot lines and wish the government bans them forever.
- Extremely boring and draggy middle. Ep 18-28 (basically 10 episodes) nothing much happens.
- Female lead’s revenge story felt lacklustre.
- The love story didn’t grab me. I don’t know what it is but I just couldn’t connect with it (which is rare for me).

OVERALL:
You will like this drama if you want to see:
1. a badass, assassin female lead

Life is unpredictable, live it to the fullest, die without any regrets

My favourite drama of 2023....if anyone wants to know whether to watch it or not then here are my thoughts on this:
This drama has healthy relationship between main leads and other characters and heartwarming, funny, emotional, cute love stories.
It's about the characters journey to living their life to the fullest in the time of war and chaos.
It's about never giving up no matter how worse the situation is, it's about designing ur destiny with ur hands .
Spoilers ahead:
The ending gave me a real bad heartache though.... but it's understandable as the given situation of war...not much we can do about it.
My poor sweet boy shisan ❤️❤️
He was the sweetest....i hope he get more memorable roles like this I don't want to see him as a SML with a sad storyline and have a poker face always...he has so much potential.
Each and every character was fabulous
The female lead and her character is always gonna be my favourite one forever...the strongest female lead I ever watched and it didn't feel unrealistic...
I was little mad at qian Zhao and jiu'er that crazy guy ?
They both were stupid as hell so many time obviously I m talking about the character not the actors.
Few things I felt were unnecessary but it doesn't really hold back this drama from being a wonderful one.
It was about their journey and we all viewers had this journey together with them we laughed with them we cried with them.....each and every character had growth and development...it was enjoyable to see them grow.
And the love story of chu Yue and shisan was my favourite part of this drama they got so little screen time together in this drama yet their chemistry was outstanding they made me wish for them to be together...and made me cry with them.
Each and every actor played their role very well...even the character of empress zhajie was so heartwarming even tho it was just for few minutes in the drama.
Tbh i wasn't expecting much from this drama but surprisingly it became one of my favourite drama of this year.
Really great work put by everyone ❤️❤️
