It's been awhile since I've laughed this hard!
I can't remember the last time I've laughed this hard watching a kdrama. And I have Shin Hye Sun to thank for that!I'm just going to have to gush about her a bit as I just loved her exuberant and hilarious portrayal as Jang Bong-hwan trapped in the body of Queen Cheorin. She nailed this role. Not only was she funny, but she did it in a way that didn't feel like overkill. Every scene that she was in was just so much fun! She had great chemistry with everyone and I think she is one of the reasons why this drama was ranked 7th highest in cable viewership ratings.
Granted the director, writing, and editing also contributed to the success of this comedy. What was shocking to me was that the jokes actually surprised me. The editing was done well to accentuate the comedy, highlight the punchline. I've been stuck in such a kdrama rut because I've just watched too many and now everything is boring because it's too predictable, too much of the same story. This drama was such a nice REFRESHING change. There were so many memorable scenes from the dance scene in the rain to the the hot and heavy make out scene to the elaborate PDA show to squash rumors that still put a stupid grin on my face when I think about it.
The show has it's flaws, but because I viewed this more like a borderline screwball comedy with some drama mixed, I really didn't care about the historical inaccuracies, nonsensical situations, or the fact that we never get an answer as to why Jang Bong Hwan was teleported into the Queen's body (although it would have made the drama better if they could have tied up that loose end). I'm very curious to watch the original Chinese drama, but the fact that it's 35 eps has deterred me a bit.

The best time travel comedy there is..
What keeps a fictional story alive till the very end is the plot twists! Mr queen certainly outdone that department. I didn’t expect to see that many surprise twists.None of the main actors are my favourite. I usually find it hard to watch shows where cast is not that familiar or well liked by me . But I just couldn’t stop watching cuz story was addicting. It’s the best comedy time travel drama that I have watched soo far.
The Queen and King are undoubtedly the most chaotic couple and i enjoyed all their moments together.
WHAT I LOVED MOST:
Shin hye sun blew me away with her brilliant acting. The queen’s expressions, body language, and gestures were just perfectly done.
The supporting characters like lady Choi and Royal chef were cherry on the top. I loved them. These characters will surely be remembered.
I didn’t expected a comedy show to get this politically intense but the writer surpassed my expectations in every department. The story portrayed the royal schemes well. I just couldn’t tell what will happen next and what the writer will bring in the story. There were surprise twists upon twists which I love.

Nobody said no homo
Awesome isekai before things start getting homo. Spooky close. Would've been nice if they went for a more adventure comedy mystery vibe.If somebody had said no homo might have watched it.
Pls don't mind my hack.

Another show so close to perfect....if it wasn't for that ending
I generally don't write reviews when I genuinely enjoy a show, because the shows I generally really enjoy are always, somehow, ones that everyone else enjoys and rates highly and is there any point in me just adding to that?In this case, as with The Untamed, this series is damn near perfect. The casting, the acting, the music and even the plot (for the most part) is all excellent.
Let's get it out the way first, though, shall we? The ending. Hoo, boy, the ending. It let this series down big time.
The basic premise of this is that in the modern day, a rather arrogant chef, Jang Bong-hwan working at the Blue House (the official residence of the President of the Republic of South Korea) is set up by his boss to embarrass the President at an official dinner and then further implicated in corruption in food purchases.
Whilst escaping from the police out of his apartment building window, he falls into the swimming pool and drowns. He wakes up to find himself in 1851 in the body of Kim So-Yong, the future Queen Cheorin of Joseon (as Korea was called then.) What follows is Jang's attempts to not only return to his own body and his own time, but also to survive the court intrigue of the Queen's relatives, the Kim family, and their rivals, the Jo family, using only his wits, his knowledge of the past and his cooking skills.
Along the way, King Cheoljong genuinely falls in love with Jang and even compiles a 'Queen's Dictionary' consisting of all the idioms and modern slang that Jang uses regularly to try to understand her better.
Of course, when Jang and Kim So-Yong switch back about three quarters of the way through the last episode, I expected it but I was still disappointed. Even though it's made clear that both Jang and So retain some vestiges of each other's souls, even the King can tell she isn't the person he fell in love with.
And that is the real shame of it. They genuinely came to love each other and now one of them isn't really the same person anymore. It just....makes no sense.
All the kudos go to Shin Hye-sun for her performance in this. She effortlessly switches between Jang and So and you can always tell which soul is inhabiting the body. Her voice, posture and language all change completely to distinguish between them. She's a damn good actress. Nothing more to be said.
I fast forwarded through a lot of the court intrigue scenes. Not fast enough that I'd lose sight of the plot, but the court intrigue and the Grand Queen Dowager's brother being an asshole didn't really interest me.
The music is wonderful. 'Here I Am' is a beautiful song and 'bong Hwan A' is a brilliant rock song. Both make me wish I could speak Korean just so I could sing along.
This is absolutely worth a watch because the first 19 and a half episodes are great. The acting is on point, the music is brilliant and so much of it is so rewatchable.
if it hadn't been for that ending, this would be a full 10 for me.

Highest highs and lowest lows
I’ve watched 7 episodes so far. I think this is one of the best/funniest K-drama I’ve seen. I’m really enjoying it. There have been many laugh out loud moments that were brilliant. The FL has been doing a great job playing this character.Without going into too much detail, I think the show’s biggest strength is also its biggest flaw. The majority of comedy comes from the characters ( especially, the Queen) acting outrageously nothing like how people in this time period would’ve acted. The comedy part is easy to overlook because it’s meant to be funny. The issue is when they completely ignore rules and customs during serious situations, it completely takes away from what’s happening. For example, how the Queens cousin’s behavior toward the king and how he had his soldiers surrounded the king with their sword drawn was taken way too far and would have never happened.
I’m curious to see how they’ll end the show. I’m looking forward to it.

Refreshingly funny
I am now officially a fan of Shin Hye Sun! Have seen her in supporting roles before and she didn't exactly leave any lasting effect on me.After just the first episode, I am hooked! She carried out her role perfectly. So in love with her acting. I actually can't imagine any one else portraying the Queen's role.
Kim Jung Hyun is also great as the King. It is nice to see how his feelings slowly develop for someone he wasn't even remotely interested in in the first place.
Both leads have great chemistry together and it would be nice to see them in future projects. Hopefully one with a worthwhile story so as not to waste their talents.
P.S. The only issue that I have when watching historicals is that I cannot seem to remember the other characters. I have a hard time memorizing the names of supporting characters so I usually rely on facial recognition. But for historical dramas, most of them have the same attires so it gets confusing at times

Great Acting and very entertaining!!
Watch the series in a week, a very nice series, no fast forward and skipping any scenes at all!The story is not perfect, the ending is quite plain for the happy ending, but overall the pacing and plot are well maintained. Every moments are worth watching , not draggy at all unlike most of the series out there.
The comedy is really hilarious! Can't stop laughing.. LOL
Shin Hye Sun acting is really good! Her tone when Jang Bong Hwan still with the queen and without are totally different and you can hear it!
Highly recommended!

Shin Hye-sun is definitely "possessed" by Choi Jin-hyuk
Watched this immediately after I finished "See You In My 19th Life." Absolutely mesmerized by Shin Hye-sun's stellar performance there and that's one thing that draws me to watch this series. All I can say is what a ride! I love the fantasy and time-travel theme, and the comedy in it is a top-notch element. Even if it is mainly comedic, the serious scenes are believably suspenseful as well. It's sometimes a snap to remind you that of course, a historical drama has political matters in it as well.
The female lead may be "possessed" by a man, and you'll be surprised to see where this plot brings you to make you feel in the last episode. If you feel hesitant to watch the drama, better to start now than to bear any regrets for not watching this sooner.

10/10 acting, 8/10 story, 0/10 ending. This review is just a venting session about the ending
This would have been a 10/10 if not for the ending. What, you couldn't have a man and a man end up together even if he was in the body of a woman and you were implying he was practically turning into a woman? What the hell, you think that just because Kim Byung In couldn't recognize that the love of his life had swapped bodies right away, that Cheoljong wouldn't notice either? Are you now saying that what's on the surface is the only thing that matters? Are you saying that Jang Bong Hwan just goes back to his life? That he doesn't love the King anymore? Or what it wasn't him who loved the king and who the king loved. No one who was transphobic would have cared if you let them stay together or had Jang Bong Hwan remain in the body of the Queen, the transphobes can just convince themselves that biology is all that matters like they do anyways, so Jang Bong Hwan is not a man when he is in the body of the queen. I want to throw my hands up in the air like Jang Bong Hwan/the queen would do. This just goes to show how incredible that actress is. She acted out two completely different personalities, and the processes for those two personalities to mix over time and from two different directions. And back to my tirade, but I know we've already established that the ending is transphobic, or just sad. You took away Cheoljong's love! I don't care what your phobia is, but you have to admit that Cheoljong and Jang Bong Hwan/the queen had the most beautiful love, and you just took it away! (Crying ugly tears like the queen/Jang Bong Hwan. Sorry, distracted. But if you were a gender born not to have certain sexual organs that perform certain functions and all of a sudden you do, (and I know this took a lot of liberties), but this is a highly traumatic experience. Ever heard of gender dysphonia? The kind of gender experience Jang Bong Hwan went through would cause the most stalwart gentleman wish to consider self-harm. Yes self-harm. Come find me if you want to challenge someone who can speak first person to gender dysphonia, to waking up in a body that isn't theirs, that has parts that shouldn't be there. And finding himself pregnant ... I would have liked for them to have had a touch or reality here. You can't make everything better by thinking that at least you'll have power through your child. For heaven's sake, you created the character of Grand Queen Dowager Sunwon. That’s the worst kind of power, the worst kind of consolation. It should have made her even madder. Why didn't she blame/rage at Cheoljong He took control over the last thing that was hers/Jang Bong Hwan's to control. That feeling of having that last part of your body take over?! It is the most invasive, sickening destructive, devastating experiences. I guess if they even touched on this they would have had to touch on abortion and that would have been a no-no I'm sure. Otherwise 10/10 acting. Let me say it again 10/10 ACTING. Shin Hae Sun you're a God/Goddess in whatever gender or role you would like to take. Kim Jung Hyun, you did not disappoint.Questa recensione ti è stata utile?
Nailed it...timelessly funny
The actress absolutely nailed this. This will be timelessly funny with her portrayal of a 21st-century man (a ladies' man, no less) stuck in the body of a Joseon-era queen. I was pleasantly surprised at how the romance played out and how the ML interacted with her in those scenes. The costumes and set design were also stand-out.Questa recensione ti è stata utile?
