Itaewon Class (2020)

This drama got better by each ep. That doesn't mean it started as a 10/10 and became a 20/10.
It literally started at point zero. They went through all the revenge setup cliches that it was agonizing to watch, BUT it improved alot as it went by.

My favorite part was Yi Seo. I'd not have watched this if it weren't for her and I'd have totally missed this cliche yet rare gem. she was everything, strong, independent, she stood up for herself, she had alot of aegyo and though she was not "perfect" she did grow and improve as time went by (also she could easily kill someone and get away with it xD)
But the 2nd fl had her own charms too. They were both like parallel opposites. One was driven, and one took things slow, a little too slow :)

SRY is actually my 2nd least favorite male lead type (the 1st is of course the jerk).
He was naive. Stubborn. 1 minded. Driven by revenge. a little hard headed like a rock, BUT he didn't let that ruin or control his life, tbh this might be the most rational revenge plot ever xD
His stubbornness and 1 mindedness was also his charming point. He saw the good in people and he gave them a chance without being fickle about it. He didn't let others sway him but he did listen to the voice of reason.
This was not a romance drama nor was it a love triangle.
Sure they had a love line, and the usual 2 fls and 3 mls (ie the double triangle), but there was no rivalry. No hate. No angst. No one fought for attention, everything just happened naturally and -a little too- slowly xD.


I wonder which points were made by the drama writers and which parts where done by the webtoon writer. The development of the plot seems like a kdrama move while the well layered characters feel like a webtoon move :)
this was not plot driven or character driven, but the characters saved this from becoming another useless drama..

the ost here was gold, Lee Chan Sol, Gaho, Ha Hyeon Woo, SONDIA, Kim Woo Sung, Kim Feel and the others all set a great mood throughout the drama~


I don't rewatch dramas so it's always either a 1 or 10 :)

There are dramas that rule a time, that no matter how much time passes after it’s airing they are still reference and still talked to this day of what made them excellent. They are the classics. Full House, Boys Over Flowers, My Love from the Stars, Secret Garden, Goblin to say some of them. Now I dare telling Itaewon Class is to become one of them.
Let me try to tell you why:
Iteawon Class is a classic revenge story. Rich people destroying someone’s life just because they can, not seeing that the one suffering will do whatever necessary to make they pay. I am a sucker for revenge stories. It can make me a little bias, but it also can make me very critical and I know bullshit when I see bullshit. I can say Edmond Dantes (The Count of Monte Cristo) would be proud of Park Seruyi.
I.C. has all the classical aspects of a revenge story but it is made so fresh, everything seems new and surprising. The way the plot is constructed is so well made, the pace is on point, everything is done so perfect, not one minute of this drama is boring. And the clefhangers, it gave me goosebumps and anxiety problems. This is the King drama of clefhangers, just to let you know.
About the acting… Lets honestly talk about Park Seo Joon.
I choose to watch this drama simply because I wanted to watch something fun and I can always have fun watching Park Seo Joon, that's why I began to watch it, you can see that I really like him, but he is an actor of one only character. I’m saying he is a bad actor, no, Marilyn Monroe was an actress of one character and no one can say she was a bad actress.
The problem with this situation is that it can be a hit or miss in a drama, Fight My Way was spot on great, What is Wrong with Secretary Kim was not, let’s be honesty here we watched it for the eyecandy (:/). And on I.C. it was just on the line, good, not great I can think of actors the would do a better job being Park Seruyi, but Park Seo Joon doesn’t disappoint. He does not because the real Queen in this drama was Kim Dami as Jo Yiso.
I felt that everything on this drama was made for her to shine. We went back every week to watch her, to see what she was gonna do, she was the star. And truly for half of Iteawon Class I thought she was the second lead girl, I just convinced myself when I rewatched the trailer and saw that Soo Ah is not featured there.
This drama made the annoying segund lead girl, she is a bitch, follow the guy around even if he does not like her, hates and torment the girl the guy is in love with. She is everything we supposed to hate, but here we are on her side, we cheers for her, we choose her. This is the reason why Iteawon Class will be a classic.
On everyone else, everybody does a great Job… Nara as Oh Soah, Ryu Kyung Soo as Choi Seung Kwon, Yoo Jae Myung as President Jang… man, this man can act, I could empathise with him, even him as a villain.
One thing I want to talk about too, is about Lee Joo Young as Ma Hyun Yi a transgender character, I have to applaud Korea, being a very conservative country, having a saying, a very small, but present saying in this discussion so current all over the world. I see on this a new step for more diversity in Korean dramas and it gets me excited.
And for the last the ending, it was a little bit more slow than the rest of the drama, but there were one scene the final conclusion the winned it all me. And even if there are a lot of people who did not agree with me, I loved this drama, truly.

it was okay

me sorprende un montón que las reseñas en inglés más votadas le ponen una nota tirando a baja y señalan todas las flaquezas (que también le he encontrado yo) a este drama y sin embargo las reseñas en español son todo nueves y dieces... así que me he sentido un poco en la obligación de escribir la mía

vale, primero que todo
me costó un montón ver los primeros capítulos, ha sido de los pocos kdramas que he estado a puntísimo de dejar simplemente porque me aburría demasiado pero finalmente decidí esperarme hasta al capítulo 4 o así y ciertamente la serie empieza a despuntar a partir de ahí, se hace entretenida, etc. sin embargo hacia el último tercio vuelve a decaer (literalmente hay un secuestro y yo ahí ya marco la línea definitiva donde cualquier kdrama descarrila).

pros:
- diversidad (por fin!!)
- hay un par de personajes secundarios por los que daría todo
- el sentido/importancia de la amistad, lealtad, etc

contras:
- los main characters
- el romance es forzadísimo e innecesario
- el personaje principal no avanza, sigue psicológicamente igual de moralista y pesao
- la venganza como único plot conductor de la trama es agotador y repetitivo

It started really well, I was really invested in the beginning. The revenge plot, the romance that's so close yet so far, an impressive girl to pursue the guy, and the interesting side characters, really gripped my attention in the beginning.
However, after a while, Sae Royi and Oh Soo's romance started becoming stagnant, did not move forward at all, the character of Yi Seo in the beginning was cool and independent, but she just became needy and selfish later (although on a side note, she gets the guy so maybe we should aspire to be like her, lol).
What I hated the most was romance part, Sae Royi and Yi Seo didn't even make sense (every boss might as well start marrying their efficient secretaries) . Being grateful and falling in love are very different things but this movie blurred the lines between that. This was the breaking point for me. It might sound silly but to me romance in a story is of importance, not as high as the plot (which was interesting in the beginning but towards the end, I started losing interest) itself but without an attention-grabbing love story, and a lethargic plot, I just decided to drop it but not before watching the last scene so I'd know how it ended.
Not rewatching it, but I loved Park Seo Jun (I firmly believe the character he played was at fault, not the actor)
P. S. You could try watching and form your own opinions, mine might've been a bit biased coz I don't like stories where a new girl succeeds in breaking apart an already established couple.

Well, these are some of the most famous and highest level productions, and popular directors like Christopher Nolan, great directors like Bong Joon Ho and Woody Allen, and directors who are among the top two or three in history like Andrei tarkovsky.

Surely you are saying that all of them are fantasy or science fiction, but the Itaewon class is a drama and realistic, so it doesn't suit him.

Well, I have to say that we have a style that a combination of fantasy and realism is called magical realism!
But… This series is not magical realism at all!

Very good, character led drama. I'm somewhat glad that this drama did not heavily rely on romance, which is something that I like in my dramas.
The first couple of episodes are boring, but they are just setting up the backstory and introducing the characters. Once that’s done, things start to get interesting!
The characters are well written, and I enjoy that they each have an episode that has a larger focus in them and how they connect to the plot!
The plot is pretty interesting but sometimes gets lost. I did enjoy the suspense of wondering what someone is going to do next and how the DanBam crew is going to handle it together.

I absolutely loved it. "Life is a series of choices. Producing a result that matches your values".

Man what a unique story. I really enjoyed the life lessons displayed in this story. The ML has so many layers to him and the bottom line is he is someone who will stick to his values. Some people are upset he is a fool which in a way he is. From the start he was an idealistic, optimistic, introverted fool. "Life is a series of choices. Producing a result that matches your values". This is probably the best theme of the show. The ML does so many things detrimental to his life following his values and is clueless, but the one thing it did for him was bring people closer to him. He could not have done a thing by himself, but because of the choices he made, he gained friends who would do anything to help him with his goal. On the contrary, you have the SFL who chose to abandon her morality for her own success leading to a successful yet empty life. Ironically, the ML ends up way more successful than her.

SPOILER TIME

I could not really understand the SFL's character. Even when the murderer of her so called benefactor (father figure) was in jail, she did not seem happy and even looked sad. She states multiple times that she hates him for killing her benefactor, but she had the nerve to look sad while visiting him in jail. Even after he is released from jail, she has dinner and a drink with him? Her character is so inconsistent and despicable. I get her internal conflict of being an orphan and needing to worry about herself, but it did not make sense. I was waiting for her character to turn around and my expectation didn't happen. I thought she was a double agent the whole time lol, but nope she is just a selfish, terrible person. There were so many other ways she could have accomplished what she wanted, but she chose to sell herself for the easy way out and betray everyone that ever cared for her. Honestly, it felt good to see the ML reject her. Sure she tried to redeem herself at the end, but this was only because of the events that happened. She never had revenge in her mind from the start.

Also the 2nd son of the antagonist was another character I didn't understand and he did a complete 180 OUT OF NOWHERE. For him to betray his friends and put out that Hye-In was a trans was out of character. He all of a sudden became a despicable character and betrayed everyone. It really made no sense considering his character build-up. They say he did it all for the FL, but she literally clarified it and he still went down the evil path. It was another moral of the story that business is about people; while the CEO antagonist thought business was about profits. Ultimately he ended up with no one by his side by the end including his sons who wanted him dead.

Also when ML gets out of jail, it shows he has a relationship with this mob boss, but then that goes nowhere and the boss actually sides with the antagonist at the end; so why show him liking the ML. I guess they wanted to show that money means everything, but at this point the ML is also rich and the mob is banking on this ex-convict to take over the group which he never would because he is an ex-convict. That part did not make sense to me tbh.

The FL is amazing in her resolve to change once she meets the ML. She was initially someone without a care in the world and superficial until she met the ML. He was someone completely opposite to her. She could not believe that after all the pain and suffering the ML has been through; he can still be this kind, forgiving person. A personality that she has never met in her entire life and she falls for the ML. The moment when she thought "I want to make the ML into someone amazing" was so good. It was honestly so nice to see a FL who reciprocates the care that the ML gives. She was the only one who saw his pain and wanted to save him like he does for everyone else. The ML has never had anyone care for him like the FL did. He never had anyone cry for his pain; when he himself never cared how much he hurt. As much as the FL changed by meeting the ML; the ML also changed meeting her. He was always someone to hide his emotions and wear a mask; but around her he seems to let it all out. The leads had so many good moments and the acting was so good. The ML was someone who was always selfless and put others before him and the first time he decided to be selfish was to keep the FL as his manager knowing she was putting her entire life on the line. She was willing to become the devil if it meant helping the ML, but the ML would never allow that. She was the only one to do to him what he has been doing to others and she melted his icy cold exterior. The scene where ML realizes he likes the FL was done so well. It was an amazing story. This was the FL's first main role in a series and she deserved the award she got for it.

Overall, I am just nitpicking on some parts and really enjoyed the series. Definitely something I will rewatch down the line.

Debo decir que comencé a ver este drama porque Park Seo Joon salía en él. Soy su fan, amo su trabajo y habia quedado fascinada con su trabajo en What´s Wrong With Secretary Kim (excelente drama por cierto) así que OBVIAMENTE debía de ver este nuevo drama.

Es un drama que te atrapa desde el principio. Su personaje te atrapa, por tanta injusticia que se nos muestra en los primeros capitulos, tanta cosa fea que le pasa a él y a su familia solo por el hecho de que se metió con las personas equivocadas (tipico coreano que porque mi papa es dueño de una empresa super importante en Corea puedo hacer lo que se me hinche un...) y él es fiel a sus principios y hace lo correcto ocasionadole grandes consecuencias.

El drama en general nos demuestra que con paciencia, esfuerzo y sobre todo, tener siempre estar tranquilo sin caer en provocaciones. A mi me sorprendió mucho, los personajes que metieron como "principales". El chavo que es transexual (el papel lo interpreta una chica), y un extranjero, una persona de color, que se nota que no es actor, porque no me gusto su actuacion, sin embargo el verlo ahi y que hablara coreano me sorprendio y me parecio novedoso.

Ya necesitaba una protagonista fuerte, ya saben, no la tipica chica que esta en peligro y el protagonista la viene a rescatar. Amé mucho el personaje de YiSeo, es independiente, sabe lo que quiere, y es noble, quiza un poco directa, sn pelos en la lengua como decimos en mi país pero es su fuerte.

En cuanto a los antagonistas, empezemos con Soo Ah. La odie desde el episodio donde supuestamente ella le habia hablado a la policia para decir que habia menores de edad bebiendo en Danbam, y aunque despues resulta ser que no era ella, el odio se me quedó. Si hubiera querido se hubiera ido del grupo Jangga desde que Seori regreso y abrio el bar. Algo que me gusto de ella es que al final delata todas las cosas que el grupo Jangga realizaba ilegalmente. Y a pesar de que tuvo roces con Yi Seo, ellas pueden compartir un espacio si me explico? Creo que si nos adelantamos en el futuro yo creo que ellas serian grandes amigas.

De Geun Won , bueno, realmente el solo es un idiota. Se esforzó demasiado para poder tener la aprobación de su papá pero realmente nunca lo logro (también el señor era bien caca con él, digo ya no pudo comer pollito nunca mas haha) . Sentí muy feo cuando el papá lo entrega a la policia para no perder su empresa. Va a la carcel y de ahi se pudo haber ido a otro lado , dejar las cosas atras pero es demasiado rencoroso y busco venganza, no podia soportar que Seo Ri haya tenido exito en su plan.

El presidente de Jangga , una persona muy ambiciosa, en un principio defendiendo a capa y a espada a su hijo porque para la familia es lo mas importante ( y por eso mandas a tu hijo a la carcel despues) y los mismos pensamientos del hijo, yo tengo poder, yo hago lo que quiera. Fue buen contricante, tenia jugadas muy buenas, pero como siempre truinfa el bien y este señor acaba pagando todo, y valio la pena esperar a uno de los ultimos capitulos donde el se arrodilla pidiendo perdon y el SeoRi le dice algo como esto sollo haces porque tu empresa ya se fue al ca... y se va asi con la musiquita (Take that bitch) y se queda ahi llorando en el piso.

Finalizo con el pobre de Geun Soo que lo unico que quería era a la YiSeo, y realmente no es malo, solo se dejo llevar un poco por la ambicion pero al final el si recapacita (aprende Geun Woo) y termina por irse a estudiar al extranjero (para nada un cliche coreano).

Volverla a ver. Si lo haría pero ahorita no, la acabo de terminar hace como 3 días , quiza en algunos años, pero si.

Interessante mas...

Itaewon Class tem tudo que eu gosto em um drama, como uma boa história, ação, suspense, comédia sendo que esta está na medida certa, o que eu aprecio , já assistir vários dramas que tinha tudo para ser interessanta mas foram arruinados pele exesso de comédia.

Outro fator que me agradou bastante nesta série foi a protagonista feminina Yo Si Seo, ela foi incrivel, foi bem despresivel e infantil as veses porem para mim foi um grande destaque . A personagem foi bem intensa a atriz atuou muito bem interpretando ela. Eu adoro protagonistas femininas inteligentes, determinadas pró ativas e bem vestidas. Quero deixar claro que realmente desprezei a protagonista em boa parte do drama, ela de fato era desagradável mais ainda sim me chamou atenção.

O protagonista masculino foi fraco, bem sem graça, era uma boa pessoa mais não me impactou em nada, parecia uma porta sem expressão, dizia palavras bonitas mais não me convencia; falando nisso outra coisa que não me convenceu foi o romance, o cassal não tinha quimica estavam mais para irmãos do que para um casal, se não tivesse romance seria mais interessante.

Um aspecto admirável foi a amizade e a lealdade mostradas no drama, esse sem sombra de duvida foi o que mais me chamou atenção.

O inicio deste drama foi incrível, digo os 8 primeiros episódios eu realmente me agradaram, eu fiquei grudada na tela e cada vez que acabava um episódio eu queria continuar para saber o desenrolar da história, porém a história foi ficando repetitiva e cansativa para mim, ainda sim interessante mais cansativa, a história da vingança já estava batida e tudo corria em um loop infinito.

Em fim não me arrependi de ter assistido, valeu a pena porém não voltaria a ver, uma vez já basta.
