Chocolate (2019)

Esse drama é sobre relações humanas. Não assista se estiver buscando uma comédia romântica levinha, nem mesmo um "melodramalhão" sobre um amor impossível. Chocolate é sim sobre uma história de amor, mas mais do que isso, conta a história de dezenas de personagens e a forma como suas vidas são moldadas pelas jornadas que enfrentam, pelas suas experiências (traumáticas ou não) e por seus relacionamentos.

Chocolate tem uma vibe melancólica, sem sombra de dúvidas. Aliás, assisti os primeiros episódios com medo de que essa melancolia se transformasse em uma aura depressiva e trágica, já que a morte era um tema recorrente (e central) para a história. Rapidamente esse medo deixou de fazer sentido. A história foi tão bem executada que foi justamente essa melancolia que me prendeu completamente aos personagens e suas tramas. O drama tratou de temas sérios (doença, morte, decepção, trauma) de forma densa, profunda e extremamente madura. Para isso, o drama precisou de um ritmo lento que pode incomodar muitas pessoas. O que também ajudou a construir essa atmosfera mais madura e melancólica foi a fotografia, que é linda de se ver. Somo aqui elogios à produção fantástica desse drama, à trilha sonora perfeita ("Sweetest Thing" foi uma escolha e tanto) e atuações excelentes dos protagonistas e secundários.

For the most part this series was pretty good! The cinematography was quite good with beautiful backdrops and scene locations. All of the characters were believable and some were very colorful. My only disappointment was the last few episodes as the story arc came to an end. I thought it left too many unfinished subplots and I really wanted to see a more deserving ending for Cha Young and Kang. The ending felt incomplete and left me with vague but well founded notions that perhaps things did not work out ideally for the two main characters. I can't say I'll watch it again but who knows? There was a lot of sadness in some of the subplots but understandable and not overdone. Some of the carefully choreographed cooking scenes could have been replaced with more emphasis on the relationship between the principle characters. I started out not liking Jun but toward the end the character seemed to find himself and became more and more likable and added to the one of the more pleasant endings. This series was well worth watching and I recommend it highly. I wish it had been afforded more episodes for more completeness.

Du bien fait de la cuisine dans les rapports humains et la communication...

Ce que j'ai aimé :
Ce ne sont pas les péripéties elles-mêmes des personnages, car on a vu ça cent fois : une rencontre enfantine, un premier amour que le Destin remet sur notre route, le chef de famille tyrannique, les destins brisés par un grave accident… Non, si je l’ai aimé c’est par la qualité délicate et l’atmosphère impressionniste d’une réalisation légère et intelligente soutenue par une photo particulièrement belle, soignée, privilégiant les gros plans au ras du sol sur des herbes, des plantes, apportant des pauses de calme bonheur, et une vraie recherche dans les lumières d’aube, ou de couchant lumineux.

Les deux éléments essentiels sont la cuisine et ce qu’elle apporte de chaleur et de réconfort, et le lieu principal du drama : un centre de soins palliatifs;

Le scénario chemine paisiblement dévoilant peu à peu les tenants et aboutissants, (seulement quand il en a envie, ce qui donne une telle originalité au récit, et non aux moments obligés habituels).
On se pose des questions, puis on les oublie presque et la réponse nous arrive soudain dans un récit d’une scène passée, ou dans le besoin longtemps retenu d’une explication, et le personnage s ‘éclaire et se précise.
Les personnages pourraient être aussi les stéréotypes habituels : les deux cousins rivaux briguant l’héritage, sauf que là ils s’en écartent peu à peu, et laissent entrevoir leur personnalité profonde. C’est comme par hasard qu’on va découvrir que l’un des héros pratiquait la poterie, et c’est presque sans le faire exprès que l’autre laisse échapper à quel point la vie de contrainte qu’il a menée l’a épuisé…
Le drama est lent, rythmé par les séances de préparations culinaires de l’héroïne, rappelons-le, la cuisine y est le vecteur essentiel de la relation humaine. Dans un centre de soins palliatifs, les patients sont sur le départ…. et des départs il y en aura, mais le réalisateur a su rester dans la délicatesse de l’évocation. Et c’est par la cuisine et les souvenirs qu’ils en ont que ces patients vont vivre leurs derniers jours, retrouvant leur enfance, ou leur amour par le miracle d’un goût longtemps cherché et enfin retrouvé.
La cuisine est le symbole de la vie plus forte que tout jusqu’au bout. Les différentes anecdotes liées aux patients s’intercalent dans l’histoire principale, tissant un récit qui nous imprègne de plus en plus, non de tristesse mais de chaleur humaine et de bonheur tranquille. Les personnages vont trouver leur voie, la force d’imposer leur choix, la force de pardonner, la liberté de choisir.

les défauts :
Justement, la légèreté de la réalisation frôle l’inconsistance, les trois premiers épisodes déroutent, on ne saisit pas où veut aller le réalisateur, les années défilent d’un coup, accumulant les évènements, comme si le réalisateur avait cherché un peu son chemin, jusqu’au moment de l’arrivée au centre de soins. Là, l’histoire s’installe et se développe, donc il faut ne pas se laisser rebuter, ce que j’ai failli faire je l’avoue !
Quelques personnages ou scènes inutiles (le frère, très souvent insupportable, la dernière séparation qui n’apportait rien, comme si le réalisateur s’était dit « Ah ! rappelons-nous qu’on fait un drama, ça manque de cliché ! » ) mais cela ne détruit pas la jolie petite musique, juste une ou deux fausses notes !
la fin :
on aimerait que tout soit bouclé, mais ce qui a été perdu ne reviendra pas, et la vie continue, comme le dit Kang il y aura des moments difficiles, mais on les surmontera… Donc une fin heureuse, mais non le happy ending asséné comme la Vérité inévitable…
Justement, la musique est belle, sauf la chanson, que l’on entend surtout au début, puis qui peu à peu disparaît et c’est très bien, elle ne collait plus du tout à l’atmosphère.

Les acteurs sont très bons particulièrement Yoon Kye Sang, déjà tellement excellent dans le film « Malmoe », tout en retenue, intériorité et justesse. Je dirais que lui et Jang Seung Jo (Lee Joon) jouaient « cinéma » et les autres jouaient « drama », et ça se voyait un peu avec Ha Ji Won, qui m’a parue parfois moins à l’aise, surtout dans les scènes avec Lee Kang. Lui, il « était », elle, elle « jouait », si vous voyez ce que je veux dire.

Mais comme la bonne cuisine, ce drama se goûte, se déguste et laisse une grande douceur en bouche.

comecei a assistir chocolate só como um passatempo, mas de pouco em pouco comecei a gostar dele.
é verdade que esse drama é cheio de discrepâncias, plot holes, coisas importantes que ficaram sem resposta ou sem desenvolvimento (como a história da mãe do kang), mas apesar da narrativa esburacada, esse dorama me ensinou coisas importantes, teve momentos que me emocionaram de verdade, e personagens que eu me identifiquei e consegui me colocar no lugar de todos os personagens.
em conclusão, apesar dos pesares, gostei muito desse dorama, da história dos pacientes, dos personagens secundários e principais, uma história sobre perseverança e sobre aproveitar cada momento, pois cada mínimo momento é precioso, como a fala do irmão da prota no final, "o dia de hoje que você tanto odeia pode ser o amanhã que alguém que se foi tanto queria".

Beautiful, sentimental but overall underwhelming

If you require a quick emotional fix, this show has what you need. However, If you want a show with flushed-out plotlines, no cliches, and lots of romance and you might want to skip this one.

There are several storylines with many characters experiencing their own unique issues. The characters and their vulnerabilities really grasped my attention for the first 6 episodes. However, it eventually led to its own downfall. There was too much, which inevitably left us feeling like there was too little. There were too many plot lines which made the viewer felt like they needed a flow chart to keep up. Additionally, there was not enough time to fully flush out each plot device, so the result felt choppy and fast. However, it also felt agonizingly slow as the main plots dragged on and on.

Perhaps this is simply due to my own taste, but I found it redundant the number of times the main female lead would consistently getting into unnecessary danger. This danger only happens before the main couple becomes a couple, so it came off as a cheap plot device to push the male to "notice" his feeling. It's a cliche drama device, so I can't be too mad at it. She eventually experiences something that impacts a major part of her character and gets over it relatively quickly, and it's rarely addressed afterwords. Additionally, the main couple hardly gets any screen time, and although they have great chemistry, it really didn't showcase the joyous feelings of being in love.

The food and cooking aspects were great. The stories of the patients were beautiful and sentimental. I cried quite a bit, honestly. The acting was amazing, and the character's backstories and personalities were given as much depth as possible, given the vastness of the cast. Additionally, the visuals were beautiful and emulated the peaceful nature of a hospice.

Overall, this is a good drama, but I won't rewatch it. There was too much going on, and I wished they would've cut down on the subplots and invested more time on the major characters and the major plot lines. I got bored often and honestly fast-forwarded some of the more boring subplots :////

Chocolate meio amargo

gosto de melodramas e tava precisando assistir algo mais lendo, entao chocolate me pareceu uma boa pedida, e eu realmente gostei bastante no começo, gosto da forma como as cartas foram colocadas na mesa os personagens e tudo mais, me apaixonei pelo min sung, a amizade entre ele e o kang era realmente linda.

no início gostei e me pareceu apropiada a ideia do romance ser mais lento, mas poxa precisava ser TAO lento?? o casal demora uma eternidade pra ficar juntos, tanto q quando finalmente ficou eu ja nem me importava mais. e alias, o kang passa 13 eps com cara de nada sendo frio e etc pra se declarar e do nada virar um super galanteador? pf ne

por se passar em um hospital onde pacientes terminais vao para passar seus últimos momentos pode-se esperar uma boa dose de sofrimento e historias tristes, eu realmente me envolvi com muitas das historias, mas a do michael, por exemplo, me pareceu BEM forçada e chata, a mae adotiva dele entao? meu deus, nao suprotava aquela mulher. mesmo eu gostei da maioria ali, todos os personagens envolvidos com o hospital me cativou de certa forma.

sobre os principais, o prota tem a expressao de uma porta e a prota ficava mais chata a cada ep, no inicio ela me cativou bastante mas dps foi se tornando a tipica personagem coitadinha que so chora. aquela cena em q ela leva ele pra wando dirigindo por 6 horas sendo q ia fzr outra coisa e quando chega la simplesmente fala que vai pegar um onibus???? por deus no minimo tinha q fzr ele pagar pra ela ne, mulher te valoriza. o prota por sua vez evolui um pouco, mais pro final os musculos da face dele descongelam e ele aprende a rir.

a família do kang eh bem a tipica família q briga por herança quase sem nenhum novo elememto, a familia da prota nao eh desenvolvida (so o irmao) oq pra mim deixou a desejar, a gente n sabe mto sobre a vida dela dps q foi abandonada, enquanto sobre o kang temos fragmentos da sua infância tornando facil imaginar como ele chegou ate ali a cha young nao, sabemos q estavam em wando (pq? n sei) dps de um ano ela volta (como? nao sei?) dps a mae dela abandona ela e tudo q vemos eh ela falando no orelhão dps ja vemos ela sob os escombros (em q momento ela entrou no prédio? nao sei) do nada a mulher se tornou uma cozinheira formada na italia (com q dinheiro? nao sei)
eu tinha mas vontade de saber a historia da prota mas eles deixam de desenvolver pra mostrar a familia do kang que parece a mesma de outros 1000 doramas q envolve chaebol

sobre os dialogos, meu deus tem uma hora que cansa, se esforçaram muito pra colocar dialogos tao profundos e reflexivos quanto irreais, senti saudades de conversas mais espontâneas, sabe quando a gente assiste algo e pensa "puts uma conversa dessas nunca aconteceria na vida real" então, 90% dos dialogos têm essa vibe.

pra mim o melhor arco foi o do seung jo, amei todo desenvolvimento dele e se tornou um dos meus personagens favs da hostoria

agora assim, aquele final, honestamente, imoral demais fazer aquilo, usou a mesma formula "casal unico se separa sem nenhum motivo aparente sofrem um pouquinho so pra ultima cena do drama ser eles se reencontrando" isso ja encheu o saco, mas chocolate consegue levar essa pachorra pra um outro nível, a maioria dos dramas dao uma explicação ate plausível sobre a separaçao do casal, mas nao chocolate, chocolate cospe na tua cara um motivo sem pe nem cabeça e espera q vc a eite de bom grado. pq minha nossa senhora qual o sentido da mae da prota ir ver ela serio??? a mulher queria OQ indo ver a filha?? pq arrependida ela n tava, nao queria nenhum favor, ENTAO PRA QUE, me diga jtbc, PRA QUE ela foi atras da filha??? e mais, POR QUE, por QUAL MOTIVO a prota se abalou daquela forma. mulher tu foi abandonada vivesse sem mae a vida toda pq so AGORA tu ta surtando com isso? pq viu q a mae n se arrependeu? q ela enfie um rojao no cu sinceramente

mesmo com todos os defeitos chocolate mao eh um drama ruim, ele tem pontos positivos e foi ate gostosinho de assistir.

If You Have Time

I would suggest watching this show if you have a little time to waste.
Story: Though it can feel kind of slow paced the storyline really progresses quite quickly. I enjoyed how problems were not dragged along for to long except the ones from their backstory like them being first loves and the mom being the one she was trapped with at the department store. This show reminded me of “Hotel Del Luna” with the characters coming to the hospice before their death and helping to teach the main character a lesson. One thing that angered me was this man got into a car accident and lost it surgeon status yet he still driving with one hand on the wheel leaning on the window. Like my guy have you not learned your lesson.
Acting: The acting was phenomenal even in some scenes where I was like why are you crying it still made me feel bad. The cast was great and made you love them or hate them (especially that brother god he should have been in that department store)
Music: The songs were greatly composed and added to the story I never felt like it was unnecessary.
Rewatch: I honestly wouldn’t rewatch because this was not a show I would typically watch. I tend to enjoy shows like “Goblin”, “He is psychometric”, and “Tale of The Nine Tailed” to give you an idea, but if you like sad mellow drama you would enjoy this.
Overall: The drama is quite forgettable and doesn’t even touch my top ten drama list. It’s just a chill drama to relax and watch (maybe cry a little).

Great acting but mostly depressing

This is another KDrama that is hard to rate. It is so well done, but whether you would like it is very dependent on what you are looking for. For example, are you looking to be subjected to hours of sadness? Then watch it. :-)

I usually point out the good before the not so good, but I’ll reverse it this time since the not so good is the determining factor for me.

Sub-Optimal
- Sadness. Hours and hours of sadness. Too much for me, honestly.
- The writers were like, “We gave ‘em a few minutes of happiness, time to kill off someone!” Gads.
- Inexplicable choices by the leads in the last couple of episodes. Even for a KDrama, and their normal tropes, the leads’ choices seemed to not fit the characters as we knew them. So unnecessary and did not add to, but only detracted from, the story.
- What we were all waiting for pretty much came in the last couple of minutes. Too late.

The Good
- Great acting! By absolutely everyone.
- Great cinematography!
- Ha Ji-Won is the reason to watch. So beautiful and so talented. Her small and subtle, cute and comedic scenes made the series. There was just not enough of them.

So, all in all a 7. With less depression and less buffoonery at the end, would have been a 10.

Drama Maravilhoso

O drama é muito bom, diversas qualidades. Uma ótima fotografia, um ator fora dos padrões de outros dramas, Kang pra mim foi o ápice do drama. Me apaixonei.
A história do começo ao meio, é daquelas que te prendem, melodrama REAL OFICIAL. Porem, com uma beleza oculta e ensinamentos em todos episódio. Do meio ao fim, esperava mais. O relacionamento dos protagonistas deveria ser melhor trabalhado, se não é só sofrimento sem recompensa.
[Spoiler] Ao fim, fiquei insatisfeita e perdida ao ver que depois de ter a certeza do final feliz do casal a Srta Moon, desaparecer como forma de tempo do casal e de sua vida. Me parece uma construção e saída rápida do roteiro que não quis explicar muita coisa e não deixar clichê. No entanto, quebra o nosso sentimento de final feliz no meio. Poderia ter um final bem mais adequado e esclarecedor.
Entretanto, eu não vou tirar o mérito do drama que é, como eu disse, maravilhoso e que nos trouxe tantos ensinamentos e momentos de crises existenciais. Todos os personagens (menos a Srta Moon), tiveram uma evolução, a do Kang é nítida ao vermos seu semblante com sorriso nós episódios finais. De 2019, pra mim, um dos melhores dramas, entra na minha lista de favoritos com todos os pesares, pois muito dos defeitos vem pela expectativa criada pelo telespectador. Isso não é culpa do drama.

Life, Love, Death and Chocolate

I passed on chocolate so many times and I'm glad I stopped and actually gave it a try. The first few episodes are hard to get into and through, but once you make it past the overall setup for the drama then it gets pretty good. Chocolate is about hospice care and the people living out the rest of their lives in them. The romance itself is EXTREMELY slow burn and is a back burner story to the several other plot lines going on.

Cha-Young has been through a great deal of trauma in her life and finds herself becoming a chef after coming across Lee Kang when they were younger who is now a neurosurgeon. He also has childhood trauma and is very cold and distant as a result. Their paths always seem to cross at different stages of their lives and they always seem to find each other even when Cha-Young left South Korea. As the drama goes on, they both begin to open up and Kang becomes more open and caring.

The huge piece that kept me coming back to this drama were the people inside of the hospice and the food. They each have beautiful stories that play out and are each given the last dish they want to taste by Cha-Young. So many episodes had me crying and mourning with everyone. It feels like you are a part of their last few months as well and really helps drive home that they are people who live there and aren't just in the hospital. They are cherishing their every moment and everything in it.

As well as all of the hospice patients, the director of hospice and Ms. Han, were such incredible characters that pulled at my heart strings every moment they got. It really hit home for me personally and just had me feeling for the both of them. Life gets in the way so much and sometimes you only have the moments before it's too late. They were such a beautiful story in the world of chocolate. I felt the same way about Cha-Young's brother Tae-Hyun and the woman he meets while in hospice. So many beautiful people and stories linked together through food and love.

I rated this drama an 8.5 because of their relationship mostly. I was rooting for them from the beginning and even more so towards the middle of the show and the burn is very slow. I could appreciate this entirely because it made it even more worth it when they finally did get together, but the ending made it fall flat for me. It felt as though the writer felt they had to keep going when they could've just stopped. We didn't need to see Cha-Young meeting her mom again after 20 years... It was really unnecessary in the story and only added to the weird ending that we got. We spend almost 14-15 episodes waiting for them to get together and when they finally do, Cha-Young just dips again to Greece? Leaving behind Kang AGAIN after waiting for him to love her back... right after they were talking about running away together and eloping. It just didn't give me the conclusion I felt was good enough for the love story I had watched. The show could've been so much better had it just ended with a cheesy marriage scene. Sometimes the happy ending is the better one versus trying to tie in more of this "We always find each other" stuff. It really ruined the overall vibe of the last episode for me. Episode 15 would of been a perfect ending point.

It hurt so good until it didn't

This will be the first drama that I take time to review because it had the potential to be one of my favorites, yet ended up turning into one of my greatest disappointments.

What starts out as a tragic romance ends on an incredibly dry and bland note which I'll get into in the spoilers below. I still give this 8 stars because I enjoyed the overall story, and when I did enjoy it I had so much fun with it. The angst of the leads was addicting and left me anticipating new episodes every week since I watched it as it aired. Outside of the romance, the setting is interesting and allows for some heartbreaking but worthwhile storylines, and a lot of the characters that could have been very one-note were developed in interesting ways, especially the male lead's cousin.

I recommend if if you're ever feeling in a masochistic mood (look into trigger warnings first), but personally I was left feeling disappointed and betrayed by an underdeveloped relationship and unexplored plotlines.

Mild spoilers ahead:
One of my favorite aspects of the drama, as mentioned above, was the ANGST. There was so much longing and anticipation building up for their inevitable relationship, which at the time felt like it was leading up to a fantastic and passionate romance. I'm not typically into the childhood connection and shared trauma tropes but it worked so well here, and as they continued to face hardships it just felt like we were building and building before getting to a satisfying conclusion. I also usually hate when things keep going wrong for the leads, but again, it just worked here. I mean a surgeon who can't use his hands, and a chef who can't taste? CINEMA. I was hooked. And then...

And then they got together. Finally. And everything just. Fizzled. All this lead up and there was no passion. There wasn't much of anything. I'll be fair and note that I haven't watched this in four years, but I remember being so disappointed in their relationship once they were actually together. At one point he throws her a little birthday party, and it should have been so cute. But it just felt so awkward. Once they were together there just weren't any sparks left, and the female lead just seemed to lose all personality, just standing around blank-faced while he seemed happy enough. It never really felt like they connected. I ended up kind of hoping that things would pick up between the FL and the ML's cousin because at least they felt like they connected on a real level rather than just "Oh, we liked each other as kids." Even the tragedy of their careers (surgeon who can't use his hands/chef who can't taste) wasn't explored as deeply as I had been anticipating. I just wish they had taken more time to develop the relationship once they were actually together, as well as more development as they worked to overcome or accept their past and present trauma as a couple.

I still give it a high score because there is so much more to this drama outside of the romance, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't my main reason for me to watch it, as well as the main reason for my disappointment.

BAU BAWANG BANGET NGET NGET NGET.

aku pribadi suka banget sama keseluruhan plot cerita chocolate ini. penuh rasa pilu, bikin sesek napas yang nonton, esp 3-4 episode pertama. di samping itu juga drama ini heartwarming and healing at the same time. aku juga suka sama opening di setiap episode yang dibuat ngga flashback dari episode sebelumnya seperti drama kebanyakan, jadi langsung maju tapi nanti dimention lagi episode sebelumnya. ostnya juga bagus-bagus pooool! walaupun di beberapa bagian, masuknya ost tidak begitu smooth jadi agak janggal. beberapa editan pun agak kurang merenah—but overall ini drama paling EUUUUHHH BERHASIL BUAT ATIKU CENAT-CENUT.
