Both involve quietly powerful, cunning women who come to serve and be loved by their king/emporer in a dangerous political enviroment. They also both involve love lines with ambitious princes trying to take down their siblings to get to the throne. They both also involve a foreign prince/princess with a strong and untamable heart.

Both involve cross dressing women who are good fighters. They both involve a strong political story with cunning women. They both involve women who are secretly from very powerful backgrounds with the potential to change their countries drastically. They both have love triangles, though Queen Seon Deok focuses less on it.

Both dramas have a younger woman and a more older male mentor. In both, the romance is forbidden, ill-fated and is full of yearning.

The Rise of Phoenixes however is beautifully produced, has wonderfully complex and interesting politics. It's also romance at a distance but has lots more quality interactions between the male and female leads.

Both of these are historical romance dramas with the palace life and relationships. They both surround a fallen kingdom and a sole heir are to the fallen kingdom. They both have a female heir getting entangled with the current ruler which leads to conflict of emotions. As I am still watching I can’t say the endings are the same however it’s nearly the same plot with different actors.

Both are historical dynasty dramas that focus on politics. And I feel TROP might have been much better at the hands of director Patrick Yau. SOTK is a stunning, gorgeous drama shot like a movie (especially at the first episode). It also has better, more realistic dialogues and plot suiting the dynasty times.... The actress to pay attention in SOTK is Regina Wan! She put up such a fine performance *thumbs up*

Great production quality for both dramas and excellent cast.
Same dynamics at the beginning between the ML and FL. He is a clever prince, under a false identity, her family was killed by his family, and they have a relationship that is antagonistic with a playful element.
Interesting imperial family dynamics.
